Nathan Chen

^^^ what’s shocking? Seems like a normal schedule no?

I think as long as he has rinks available, coaching won’t be a problem. He already said summer is with Raf and they can either get someone on Team Raf to go to Yale to train with him part time or hire someone else. It’s the technology age so Raf can realistically give lessons through Skype or what not if they really want to. Many options to make it work, luckily Raf is willing to accommodate Nathan as much as possible so that should make things easier for him.

The famed Alice Waters of Chez Panisse made a big upgrade in the quality of food at Yale (where her daughter was a student).

Thank you for that dining improvements article, ice coverage. :)
Good for Yale and Yalies.

Yes the pizza place! Maybe you can help by a few menu recommendations that are good for his training :)

Sorry, I'm a bad alum--I really haven't kept up with Yale news! That's why I'm clicking random links now, trying to learn about how things are different from those days when I had to walk up hill both ways in the snow to attend classes ;)

The student in that picture from I read from the tweets, seemed to be undecided between Yale and Harvard, so not Yale student yet. And the Yale 2022 group are bunch of students admitted into Yale, but have not committed yet, some of them may not ending up in Yale, so no violation of school policy there.

In this digital age. privacy is such a luxury if not impossible. Nathan is going to get used to, or he needs to learn to say no just like Emma Watson did when she didn't feel like taking pictures.

I wasn’t saying they are or aren’t Yale students but people have the right to not share pics.

off topic)
Have you seen the updated schedule for '19 US nationals?

:eeking:

edited: I misspoke--it's dance, not ladies, that will be in the Saturday night prime spot. Detroit is a dance capital, and as people have pointed out, our ice dance teams have placed better than our ladies of late.

The gala is on Sunday *following* the men's free skate.

*sigh*

it was too much to hope USFS would give the men a night of sleep to recover from the free skate before expecting them to perform again in the gala. No disrespect to the women, but the men have to do quads that are harder on the body than triples.

If he's in the gala, can Nathan go out there and re-enact 'Shape of You' without Ashley, please?

(I just don't want him to jump again in the gala. I have no special affection for Ed Sheeran)

No worry you have a few months to familiarize the food sector haha was it fun walking in snow to classes?

@ Ic3Rabbit Thanks!

I certainly hope so. It made no sense otherwise. I can't believe Nathan moved across the country just for the East Coast IVY experience.

I could actually believe this.

He’s already lived in CA since he was like 12 and been with Raf full time since then

Maybe he’s ready for a change and seems that he’s been dreaming of attending Ivy League/East Coast for some time

The Detroit venue is quite new? With no rest between FS and gala, will Nathan show up in shorts and a Yale sweatshirt? 😂

It says the ladies are on Thursday and Friday. Men’s Saturday and Sunday. Have no idea which is considered the “marquee” time slot lol

Yea, the men will have no time to recover but I think Nathan has learned his lesson...hopefully lol

To me, it sounds like the ladies have been demoted, especially since all of our world medalists for the past two years have been the men and Ice Dance.

Men have the marquee time slot

A lot haven’t been excited about ladies lately - including Raf

Maybe Nathan can just do ice dancing for the gala !

If that’s the case, I don’t blame them. Other than Ashley (who doesn’t get enough credits for her accomplishments imo), Ladies have been not so great in international competitions for about a decade. Raf said it rather bluntly (as usual haha) but there really isn’t any US ladies coming up that will be a threat so focusing on their stronger disciplines in men and ice dance (still can’t believe this lol) makes sense

re: coaching for Nathan,
Ic3Rabbit, I am going to google it now, but google is no substitute for actual knowledge, so may I ask you to comment on Curran Oi's coaching situation?

He's a graduate student, not an undergrad, but I believe Curran was aiming to compete at his highest level--he may not be a World Champion, but like Kevin Shum he gave me the impression of someone fully committed to achieving all he can in skating, not someone willing to let skating slide to focus on school. He achieved his goal of making Nationals in the 2016 season, while he was a graduate student in a demanding biophysics PhD program at Yale.

wikipedia says Matt Savoie coaches him once a week. Matt Savoie is certainly a skater revered for his skating skills and if he coached as well as he skated he should surely be able to improve SS and spins and less outstanding aspects of Nathan's skating. Can you comment on potential coaches, on Matt's availability, etc?

wikipedia also tells me Matt is based in Boston. How about it, Ic3Rabbit, can we trust any of this info on wikipedia?

Thank you and sorry for putting you on the spot--that's what comes with being our resident expert ;)

Men's FS was Sat night this past year as well but it was shoved onto NBCSN so fat lot of good that did for increasing exposure to the men's event.

I cannot really comment on Oi, as I don't know much about his particular situation, sorry.

You're welcome. ;)

Maybe when TV was negotiated with USFS NBC didn't know they would end up with the Saturday night wild card game. In an Olympic year with better medal prospects in men than ladies I think they would not have shoved it onto NBCSN if they didn't have a conflict with an NFL playoff game.

I have no idea if next year's Nationals coincide with the week between NFL playoffs and the Superbowl or not, but after wild card weekend there are fewer playoff games each week. I just wish all the men who will perform in the gala could get a night of sleep after the free skate. I don't have the knowledge to understand why it is scheduled this way. *shrugs*
