Nathan Chen

@hhh, Nathan's white shirt sleeve is significantly longer than his suit. is this the correct way to wear?

I just asked my guy friend

His response - (lol) ... it’s supposed to be like half an inch longer, not that much longer

Some pics looked too long while others seemed just the right length, alrighty, time to get him a new suit... 🤣 what a puzzle!

AP statics is easier than AP Cal, quite some students takes AP statistics before AP Calculus, so he could probably take AP statistics around 15

And he must be good at Physics too. There was an interview before Olympics, he talked about something like if he is not the best in class, he specifically mentioned " like Physics", he would be upset.

When did he take his SAT subject, usually students would take subject test right after pre cal.

He’s good at all things related to math (and obviously other subjects but math is his favorite though he said he loves bio too iirc). He’s mentioned statistics as one of his possible majors before actually so not surprising. He even said sometimes he’ll calculate on the spot during a competition his general points and decide what to add in on the fly in the middle of the routine if he feels he needs the points (like he made a mistake earlier etc) so he’s always calculating something.

Interesting about how if he wasn’t the best, he’d be upset lol. That sounds like him, was that a paper or video interview?

He took his SATs in 2017 so he’d have already been done with AP Calc by then

Has Nathan been wearing these pants for the shows too?

Now I’m seeing these pics from a different perspective - so cute ... this is like the prom he never got to attend!

No clue when he took his SAT subject tests - but he probably quickly skimmed the review books and got 800s haha

Is it normal for skaters to actively calculate their points on the spot or is it just Nathan the math whiz? Wouldn’t it distract from the emotional interpretation?

I don’t know about others but for him I don’t think it would distract mainly because it comes easy to him. Like if you already know what the BV of each element of your program is and you know you made a mistake, it’s pretty easy to know generally how many points would be deducted and choose something else to add to make up for it (or replace it with a higher value element etc). Sounds more complicated than it is but it’s basic math and is probably about as distracting as breathing would be to him.

With his gifted math ability, it serves as focal point for him with a calming effect, almost an innate trait inside him, while feeling the music in his skate. One of these days, he should be mic up and do a run through to show how he does it.

I don't think they calculate points on the spot. It's more like they have done so many run thrus in practice that they know what to do when they make certain mistakes.

People, he’s not calculating the exact points of different jumps while he’s skating! :rolleye:
He’s just re-evaluating his options when a mistake happens (which all skaters do to varying extends and obviously within their, often limited, jumping abilities). And you don't need to know or calculate the exact points, to know that a 4Lz has a higher BV than a 4T or 3Lz.
So this is just a silly video, and Nathan’s SAT score is basically irrelevant to the point, that they’re trying to make.

Also, having a knack for numbers i.e. being good at doing quick mental calculations isn’t necessarily (or at all) related to being good at math.
Don’t you know, there’s this old joke, that mathmaticians (and that would include statisticians) are bad at calculating because they can’t deal with numbers (because they only work with constants and variables).

Nathan why aren’t you dancing to MJ? Maybe he’s waiting for the rink lol 😂

LOL at Nathan and Karen looking so awkward and inhibited, while all the older people next to them are rocking out, such a typical reaction for teenagers!
It’s like they’re clinging to each other, because they don’t know what to do with their hands otherwise.
