Nathan Chen

Did anyone go or does anyone know if Nathan (or the Olympic skaters) actually perform in the FS In Harlem event? Or was it just a reception? Kind of strange to have all these skaters at Chelsea Piers but not have them perform?

I don’t think Nathan or the other Olympic skaters performed in the event. But unfortunately I wasn’t there in person !

I think Skate America and Grand Prix France work best with Nathan’s school schedule - fall break and thanksgiving break.

I first heard of this from the Phil Hersch article about Nathan’s acceptance at Yale.

Also wondering if Nathan is still going to have his physio from OTC - perhaps not

Even if Nathan wanted to get away from Raf, he really doesn’t have to - he hardly sees him as is and school hasn’t even started yet. He’s not going to have a lot of time to train with him in the summer either.

He’ll still be with him physically on and off, but that’s still his coach. I took Discord comments to mean that some wanted him to drop Raf as a coach altogether.

"drop Raf as a coach" would looks really bad if no other long-term coaching siutaion has been arranged and committed.

And if Nathan does have someone to give him help on-site regularly, but not listed in his coaching team, it would not be fair to the other person. but who knows, maybe some coach would not care too much to sit on the K&C with Nathan.

Maybe the part I'm most concerned about is the lack of support system. No coach, no family, no training mates. His friends will all be normal kids with no skating background. Will he even have a physio? It will take some kind of superhuman effort to pull this off.

freshman 15

Nathan, your Chinese fans love your tinny waist.

As far as GP, from all indications: SA and France are his better choices and he is very likely will chose these 2.

I assume Raf will be with him at all competitions. I don’t that that’ll be a problem, at least I don’t think so. I was just surprised to hear that some thought he would drop Raf as a coach. I’d be shocked if that ever happened (with these two specifically I mean, coaching changes are obviously very common in FS)

Does he get to choose? Doesn’t he have to get invited? SA is obviously no problem but France might depend like Japan may not want their top 2 in a GP assignment and top 3 can’t meet so idk

something else,
I found out many US ice dancer teams like H&D can move to train in Canada for long term. so the paper work seems is not that daunting. Just saying.

haha

The stress of being so busy may result in the opposite of the freshman 15

I think the lack of support system is a valid concern. Would this be the least amount of support of any top skater? Nathan is almost superhuman - but still. I think he's choosing this year (at least) to prioritize college over skating.

I don’t know why but I’m kind of getting pretty excited to see Nathan take on this new challenge of doing both school and skating full time and having a coach that can only train him remotely on top of all that - maybe he’s nuts and I am too but it’s really pretty exciting and suspenseful to find out whether he will really be able to do EVERYTHING. Like he said, this year is a test run so might as well just give it a try. He is young and smart and will figure out whatever adjustments will be necessary after this year anyway. Life for him is full of challenges

No the event was at Pier 60, skyrink is at Pier 61. I actually contacted rink manager and was told they were not communicated about the event.

Same. It’s an exciting time. We should be happy lol, it’s really cool what he’s trying to achieve. I like it.

yeah, and he has been like that as always, we can count his team memebers in one hand and in his early years we can still occationally see Nadia is on K&C with him. now it is just those couple of people we all kr and don't kr if that PT trainer will be with him in Yale.

Maybe Nathan has learned enough from that PT trainer, so that he can do his PT on his own as well.

ETA: our Nathan is a frugal boi.:o::yes:

Exciting and suspenseful! In the movie that is Nathan's life - haha

Training and possibly PT on his own - Nathan has to be the most independent 19-year old top skater ever

Next season Nathan will be introduced by commenters as world champion and freshman in Yale. :luv17:

Stanning Nathan is definitely stressful at times but we can say it’s never a dull moment. And his achievements are already extraordinary enough that if he accomplishes these feats on top of it, what else can we say? We just gotta be like proud parents and hope for the best. Pick him up if he falls and shout from the roof tops and boast when he succeeds. It’s more fun like this 😆

Nathan has never been one to disclose all of the details of his training and programs. While I am concerned about what he said, I also have to remember that Nathan is ridiculously secretive. As soon as school starts, people from his rink will start giving more details.

I was quite concern when we first heard of his Yale news, as time went on and giving more thoughts on what he’s like, I am one that looks forward to his new phase, keeping cards close to him is good for him as reporters often like to spice things up and it’s his career and life he’s planning. I don’t think anyone will have a flawless freshman year pro or not, but it’s the right year for him to experience and grow from it which I’m confident he will come out better. Now if he can ONLy disclose his new programs that’ll be super.

2014 wasn’t a pretty OG, if it was applied to evaluate a team management, the tops all fell short.
