Nathan Chen

ok, OT but I had not even heard of Joseph Phan until yesterday - but saw the link to his IG post with 4lz yesterday.

His IG is quite endearing and he seems to have a great sense of humor. His ‘training video’ - lol:

Pizza post - haha:

thanks, quite funny training collage. the only impression that I have with Phan it first he is Canadian, and second he seems is an artistic skater? but now a 4LZ jumper...

confession: after I started to stan Nathan, I spend all my attention on Nathan... did not pay as much as attention to other figure skaters as a figure skating fan should be

Undoubtly he will help, but help as he truly believes in it VS help as "I will try even though I know it's going to fail" is different.

Has Nathan even expressed what his expectations are? How does he define success and failure? If he just want to make the world team then that shouldn't be too difficult. If he wants to repeat as World Champion that is an entirely different matter.

I just realized we were at 500 pages on Nathan’s Bday and we’re already at 551 3 days later lol 😳

We talk a lot 😂

Woh, thanks to another interview which was in another language with various translated versions to blow up this thread. Anti Rafs or not, there’s no need to be on an attack mode due a difference in opinions especially when we’re looking in from the outside and aren’t pro skaters or coaches ourselves. Interviews are just only good as reference with a grain of salt. Frankly, I don’t believe they have shared all their plans with the media and probably won’t.

I’ve been coached in a different sport and it’s definitely a two-way street, at times like it or not, even parents have their two cents which can be a train wreck or a plus. For Nathan and Raf, they both need to work on communication and base off Worlds, it seems they are making progress. Per his post OG and Worlds in-person interviews (not through media’s mouth) Nathan has noted he’s learned how to be honest in dealing with his true emotions even at times of struggle, after all, he will behave like a teenager as much as he appears to be calm & mature on the outside. Raf also has his homework cut out as he will have to adopt and be accommodating when his team is gaining more top skaters with diverse cultures backgrounds.

With Mao, she didn’t disclosed the reason and who knows what would’ve happened if she did, so it’s an complicated example to compare Nathan’s situation. To assume Orser is the magician or he’s a great communicator is quite biased. I don’t think it’s fair to compare Hanyu’s 2014 gold medal to what happened this year with Nathan, sorry to the few Hanyu fans here, 2014 was a horrendous men’s and he got gold because Patrick crumbled. In addition, 2014 Hanyu already has about 4 seasons under his belt vs Nathan’s two, to me, the seasoning from years of senior competition does make a difference. Not too familiar to Orser selections of skaters but some were already very accomplished skaters before they arrived to his team; other coaches on the team also contributed to the refinement so all credits shouldn’t go to one person. He receives more financial and personnel assistance from the feds too. No one even know if he is a good coaching fit for Nathan with or without Hanyu. Same token, Raf does need more coaches to cross train his top skaters and the US fed needs to step up if they wish to continue to stay relevant in this sport. Hopefully, we will see the US fed invest in the future.

Nathan will have to adjust his plan after school and professional skating begin and there will be hurdles and falls which to me, is fine, he’s growing. I don’t expect this first year with both priorities on the plate to be a perfect one, as long as he’s growing and happy while overcoming the challenges that come his way and show improvements in his SS, it’ll be a plus for me.

You’re putting mildly haha

Btw who said Raf will not do his best to help Nathan succeed just because he believes the ideal situation Nathan wants will fail? Parents or teachers often share a different view due to their experiences but it doesn’t mean they won’t be there to help the kids succeed... wow what a spin.

Hehe, despite the disagreements, the discussions have been quite fun. I like that we’re a talkative and opinionated bunch. Whether it’s Nathan, Raf, or fans, there will surely never be a dull moment as long as one of those is involved 😂

Here’s some blinking baby Nathan, hope that helps 😘

I wanna know when we'll get choreo rumors. will we even get choreo rumors? enlighten this newbie Nathan fan who never paid attention to such things before

And of course, the discussion here is always fun and enlighting. :luv17:

I want to know when everyone started to fall in :luv17: with Nathan and how he caught your eye. For me it was Le Corsaire at US Nats last year, and then Stole the Show there showed a even different side of him that made me go  and  Nathaaaaan. Prior to that I had been quite disinterested in men's skating for a long time.

Same here, Le Corsaire at US Nats. I loved the style and musicality with which he delivered cutting edge technical content.

perhaps stole the show lol...it happened too fast and I couldn't remember. To me it's like never watch men's skating to only want to watch men's skating switch overnight. The only male skater I have watched in the last 4 years is Yuzuru for perhaps once.

the choreo is also never a dull moment.

2 years ago is the fight with Marina
1 years ago is super secretive, fans posted sun valley nemesis and was politely asked to take it down by Team Nathan.

NATHAN😍 - I first noticed him at 2017 Nationals - Le Corsaire. I was immediately very interested in this ballet inspired program - and was like OMG! when I saw his 4F perfectly timed to the descending harp. Then I was like WOW! to his step sequence - really loved this program very much. Prince Igor was quite mind blowing and Stole the Show - immediately loved as well - and couldn’t quite believe a 17 year old guy was capable of skating with such confidence, style, and swagger. I really loved Nathan’s skating style and athletic abilities before I even noticed ...

His cuteness and 🔥🔥. Honestly I didn’t pay much attention to him until prior to 2018 Nationals. I started lurking in this FF and immediately got sucked into reading the conversation about his haircut from the ‘celebrity stylist’. My first post in this FF - all due to Nathan’s haircut ;)

Then I started watching the videos of what I had missed during the season - and I was 😍😍 when I saw him at GPF gala in the white collared shirt. So handsome💞🔥❄️

But really what got me interested in the discussion here was his haircut and new Vera costumes at Nationals - so shallow !

Oh really? Didnt't know about that. Who exactly asked those fans to take it down?

@oatmella, speaking of the harp, have you seen Le Corsaire from Finlandia? It's a bit different than his US Nats version.
I LOOOOVE that move he does with the harp at 1:20 https://youtu.be/12OXBnpidWM?t=80 So musical and elegant and beautiful. I think he made changes between 16 GPF and 17 US Nats and unfortunately that move was not as pronounced as before.

shine - thanks for sharing! ahh so musical and pretty😍 ... and different too. That basic black outfit though ;)

^Small things like that are really what make Nathan's skating so special. And yes, basic black outfit... vintage NChen.

I found someone to ask the coach in that Chelsea piers picture about Nathan. He was there the next morning after Harlem gala (just like I predicted ). He didn't practice quads, but was just casually practicing his program (for SOI I guess) with a couple of triples.
