Nathan Chen

Hmmm I didn't really understand the translation of the Japanese fan's ig. Was she basically disappointed because Nathan wasn't interacting as much as she had hoped?

ok I don't really know as I don't closely follow Tom. But I do hear of him in the off season - for example, he attends the Met Gala (very high profile event) every year.

Aaron Rodgers dates famous women - Olivia Munn, Danica Patrick. There are plenty of paparazzi photos of him - hardly super low-key.

As for Ellen - I have the impression that she invites those on the show that she likes (Adam, Tessa&Scott), child prodigy types, random internet people she likes.

Tom's wife the hottest super model on this planet, guess, the Met gala is a must if not for him but his wife.

Wonder will Nathan have a high-profile girlfriend?

Going to Met Gala once a year is not really on the level of other big athletes. I’m not saying he doesn’t do any promoting whatsoever, I said relative to other big athletes, he doesn’t put himself out there that much. Aaron Rodgers dating famous women is also not the same thing as actively promoting himself. He’s never on social media, he barely does interviews, he’s pretty private but he happens to date other famous people so they will be papped but that’s not the same thing. He can’t do much about that. These are in contrast to NBA players who are super involved in social media and do interviews year round, it’s totally different level. Soccer players do this often as well.

But anyways my point was that Nathan is not actively seeking fame and his sponsorships are jobs, they’re not freebies. He gets the perks bc he worked for them but he’d probably be just fine if/when they go away. I don’t think he’d be comfortable with too much celebrity.

Perhaps Aaron is a unique example - like his brother went on The Bachelorette and his whole family as well - which basically revealed that Aaron is estranged from them. It seemed that Aaron felt that airing this stuff in public was not appropriate - so does seem like he guards his privacy.

A bit pointless to compare Nathan with NBA players. There wouldn't be the demand for him to give so many ESPN-type interviews year round, even if he wanted to. I only used the Kobe example as a non Chinese-speaking athlete becoming popular in China - not only from his athletic achievement - but appearances, commercials, and charity work. Obviously not on the same scale as Nathan.

I didn't say he's getting 'freebies' - but certain perks are not necessarily directly sponsorship-related ? We can't really assume if he wouldn't miss the perks - who knows ... but anyways, this level of fame and intense attention is really quite fleeting compared to the entirety of his life and won't last forever.

yes Jeremy Abbott had a great time performing in China, he has many dedicated Chinese fans.
also, SOI China was considering invite Gracie...

This isn't news to me. Jeremy also has huge fan groups in S. Korea and Japan.

OK, I went back and read it more closely. What she was disappointed in was that he didn't react to her during the show. LIke during the boys number he didn't point and smile at her, but rather to another person. He also overlooked her section at Osaka SOI. So she was kind of sullen going into the M&G.

NBA players, soccer players, tennis players, etc. There are those who seek fame and those who don’t in each sport, some who always promote themselves and some who do the bare minimum. For a skater, Nathan does what he’s obligated to and not much more outside of that. For now anyways.

Not that he won’t miss it, I said he’d be fine when they go away. I say that because he’s made it clear he’s already planning for life after skating so he knows it won’t be forever and he’ll enjoy it while he can but he’s not depending on it.

aww - but I don't think the skaters can really register audience members very well - it's quite dark and they're moving around. At least that's what I'm guessing?

Actually we can in most cases. We know where people are if we want to make contact with certain ones (say friends or family).

Nathan does not play favorites  JK, but in other occasions, Nathan does acknowledge this particular Japanese fan alot.

aww, it sounds like she is shy - and there may a language barrier as well. It's hard to compare with others' experiences as she may not be able to easily chat with Nathan about his skating, shared interests, etc.

Nathan definitely knows his dedicated fans - and yes - they are among the few who he follows on IG and can dm him :). He even wore the t-shirt she gave him at the Skate America gala (I think she's the same fan?)

that is the same famous Japanese fan, I think in Olympics Nathan also acknowledged her in K&C after Nathan's historical long.

the comments - lol. dare I say I won't miss this after SOI is over :)

Nathan's jawline 😍

And last mention of Tom Brady - if Nathan wants to follow his low-key example and have his own tv show/documentary - I am in support of that

Some of those comments are so cringy [emoji51]

I mean I’m neutral on shipping but not on platforms the people you’re taking about can actually read them, that’s super uncomfortable [emoji21]

Brady has been famous for over a decade and only recently has he done a docuseries or been more open so maybe in 15 years or so Nathan will do the same [emoji39]
