Nathan Chen

If he focused on maximizing his content rather than adding more content to make up for BV than he absolutely can beat Shoma atleast. His GOEs on his quads yesterday were great and he’s been fairly clean twice now on his FS. If he can have that level of consistency & not keep leaving points on the table in his SP or levels, he can beat Shoma. Yuzu he would need to at least add one more quad in the free. His main problem is that he keeps leaving points on the table, he needs to work more on the quality rather than quantity.

@Ic3Rabbit Hello! It’s been awhile, nice to hear from you :) As always thanks for the info

I am not sure our discussion on this would trigger mod. So I just have these links here and won’t comment much lol

Mean GOE

Mean PCS, Nathan is actually just behind Yuzuru. Shoma was hurt by all his falls in his GPs.

oatmella, you are welcome. We all love Nathan want everything for him, just viewing things differently little bit

I tend to agree with the call from what I can see. The edge isn't clear with the takeoff, but the landing edge was fairly clear that it was outside. The takeoff edge looked more flat of the blade than inside to me, and then from the angle I'm getting from replays I can't tell if it was fully rotated or not. :(

Again, this is just going off of the angles I'm able to get online. Not from in person.

Thanks a lot, IC3Rabbit, the camera of tp must have different angle, and showed full rotation in his free since 3t was called.

Like I said, to my trained eye, it looks a tiny bit cheated on the landing.:confused2:

Yes but Nathan’s avg GOE score on a given element is actually higher than Shoma’s this season, probably bc Shoma has been making more mistakes. But in general GOEs are about quality, it goes with my point that he needs to focus on maximizing his current content than worrying about adding in more. If his weak point to his competitors is his GOEs than it makes sense to work on those the most to me.

I don't understand why some people are pressuring Nathan over something which he doesn't need to push for right now.
He is juggling competing and studying, its but right to be on the safe side first.
He is adjusting with everything that is happening and he needs time to think it over.
So I think people should give him the space and he will figure this out.

Interesting insight into Nathan's personality. After the medal ceremony the skaters left their hexagons, bouquets, and watches at the boards so they could skate around the rink with the flags. The other guys just dropped them on the boards but Nathan neatly arranged them in a row and carefully closed the watch box.

Reminds me of the video from Pyeongchang where he had to make sure Soohorang was sitting upright while he was taking a group photo.

One of friend of mine worked at volunteer at Peyongchang, after the disappointed team event SP, he came down at practice rink and worked very hard. But even that he was in that situation, He was very polite to every volunteer and also very sweet..Nathan’s personality is always so nice..

Dave is always so over the top and dramatic. The sky is always falling in his mind and he has no clue even if he pretends he does. I think we all figured out he problem was his boots. Watching him in practice I could see his "thinking" face a lot. He didn't go into any of his quads with any deliberation. He looks like he was testing either the ice or his boots. Well that's expected. Sometimes details like this happen.

What I'm impressed by is just how well Nathan is doing! He really is a genius. He's taken his time to understand the new system rather than stick to doing things the old way. He's adding in his quads slowly to build consistency. Pretty soon he'll be back in LA training with Rafael for nationals. His ability to plan, train, adjust, cope and strive with the new challenging environment he's in this year has astounded me. Seriously, Yale+Training by skype? Insane.

Bravo Nathan. Bravo.

I wish raf and bezina would fly to yale for the week to do a solid week of training, with hanyu status up in the air, nathan can repeat as champion, and bezina could podium. Gpf has bigger prize money too.

Agreed.

Obviously I don't know how much it would take, but I really hope that Nathan/his team, having seen the way Mikhail was able to score over 100 at last year's worlds with 1 quad and now how Jason was able to score 96 in the SP with only triples, realize to shift focus to perfecting his elements so he can score more efficiently. Forget about being the quad king. I truly feel this stupid title--and I'm sorry if others love it--has unnecessarily burdened/pressured him to do as many quads as he could even when his condition was less than ideal. Work on your GOEs instead of killing yourself over adding more BV!!!!!! His spins are looking really subpar these days.

I disagree with you. When he lands his quads no Jason or Mihael can score higher. He is a student and an athlete!
He is impressive .... nothing but respect!
You win some and you lose some. Quads are here to stay, no matter what! The sport can’t go backwards!

I don't really think they are saying no quads, but work on his landings and his spins/footwork and everything else. His quads in his FS were really nice and landed beautifully and he was rewarded for it. He needs to get more GOE for what he can do well already instead of worrying about adding in more. Though he did mention that it's more important to do quality elements now. So of course he knows what he needs to do.

And I'm not really fond on the quad king title either since it's too limiting. I doubt he really wants to be known as a jumping bean and nothing else. That means when the quads fail you have nothing else.

Interesting read from Nadia. If I didn’t read it wrong, at the end of the article, is Nadia saying Nathan grows a little bit taller?
https://usfigureskatingfanzone.com/news/2018/11/24/figure-skating-q-a-with-nadia-kanaeva.aspx

GOE and quad, I don’t think anybody in this ff disputes maxing GOE on all his elements should be of much higher priority. It is just that to win against a clean Yuzuru and a clean Shoma, he needs more than 3 quads on top of getting higher GOEs, since both of those two, especially Yuzuru has much higher GOE compared to Nathan, and both of them have 2 quads in sp and 4 in free.

His layout at SkAm would comfortably beat the rest of the field. The subpar spin and stsq of his sp is more of matter of lacking of practice than the result of over focusing on quad. He did the 4t3t combo in his sp because of the botched 4f. The original planned layout is one quad.

And clarification: 1. Talking about adding adding quad when competing against Yuzuru doesn’t mean all Nathan fans like the the quad king title. Only the media loves the title. USFS probably like it when promoting events.

2. Talking about winning against Yuzuru and Shoma doesn’t mean he really he has to win. As long as he is healthy, happy and developing, that is all what matters.

His Quad King title doesn't bother me, it reflects his extraordinary athletic achievements. Having a King title/nickname for an athlete is actually quite an honor - like one of his favorite basketball players, LeBron.

It will take GOE, achieving levels in spins/steps, and quads to be his most competitive.

Sure, some skaters are capable of high scores with only triples and winning the SP with high quality elements when the guys with quads make mistakes. But Nathan said that technically, he's not where he should be. I don't see him being content with his current tech and if capable, I am certain he will eventually be adding additional quads.

If Nathan has grown taller it can't be by much. He's still shorter than Kolyada, who's listed at 167 cm (5ft6). Rather I would say that he seems to have filled out quite a bit so perhaps he'll have to adjust his technique a little to account for that.

Regarding quads, I'm sure we're all impatient to see Nathan develop into the skater he's capable of becoming. He's smart and knows what he needs to improve, but at the same time he has to keep pushing his tech just in case there comes a time when he needs it.

Nathan doesn't look taller than last season. It looks like he's filled out compared to 2016/17 season when he was very slim and more boyish looking, but he looks about the same now as he did last season. I think he's been wearing the same pair of jeans for No Good, and they seem to fit the same as at Nationals gala.

Good interview with Nadia - her answers seem very thoughtful and thanks to her for the wonderful programs she choreographed for Nathan as a junior, especially the Chopin program :luv17: - and nurturing his artistic growth.

Sponsors like the Quad King name too. For example, the United 'King Quad' promo.

Nike might not be his sponsor if he didn't have the extraordinary athletic achievements of 2016/17 season including the first 5-quad program at Nationals - which led to his Quad King title.

It doesn't mean there isn't more to his skating than quads or it’s a hindrance to his growth as a skater.
