Nathan Chen

I think we were all super excited about that 4F - including Nathan

He will be skating 4th again tomorrow!

I need some advice! I am planning to go US championship to see Nathan, and I wonder do i also need to buy mens sp group1-2 ticket or not🤔(I already bought SP group3-4 and FS!) It is my first time to attend us championship 😂

Hi guys! Relatively new Nathan fan here. :) I don't usually do this -- post stuff online, I mean. But I have this niggling question regarding that I just gotta have an answer to. I hope you guys can clear it up. ;-)

So, I've been a skating fan since Yuna Kim's prominent era and used to watch only the ladies' discipline (until Nathan broke my heart at the Olympics with that Free Skate a la Mao Asada at Sochi '14). I feel like I understand protocol enough(?) from years of watching the ladies, but I wonder - are the differences in the protocol between ladies' and men's? I'm just confused because when Evgenia missed her 3F-3T at SkCanada she didn't get any credit for it (0 BV and 0 GOE), but when Nathan missed his 4T-3T, he got 10.45 BV for the 4T and a negative GOE, which gives him around 5 points(?) despite having missed his combo like Zhenya had.

Is it protocol that a fully rotated quad be credited despite being part of a missed combo because quads are harder than triples? Not complaining, SWEAR! Please don't get me wrong. I love Nathan to death and would love to name my firstborn son Nathan/Nathaniel :luv17:, but this got me confused. I hope this isn't just an error and he still receives credit for the missed combo because I want nothing more than for him to win gold again and shut his doubters up.

Well, I'm not expert by any means but looking at the protocols http://www.isuresults.com/results/season1819/gpcan2018/gpcan2018_Ladies_SP_Scores.pdf

She did get some credit for it but it was a downgraded jump. If I remember corrected it was just a 2F and she missed the combo and on top of the negative GOE means she didn't get much for it. He fully rotated the quad.

I'd compare Shoma's NHK SP skate to Nathan's here more than Zhenya's.

Evgenia got BV 1.98 for that combo. Her 3F was downgraded << , that's why.

Nathan's 4T+combo received -5 GOE, receiving 5.70 pts. But his 4T was deemed fully rotated & landed.

For other examples, look at Shoma NHK Trophy SP, 4T+ combo, he received 4.75 pts cos it was in 1st half.

At France GP, Dmitri Aliev had similar prob with Evgenia. Look at SP, no 9.
4T<+combo. Dmitri's 4T was deemed underotated, he only received 4.27 pts at 2nd half.

At Rostelecom GP, in the FS, Yuzuru's 4T+1Eu<<+3S. His 1Eu was downgraded but both 4T, 3S deemed fully rotated.

Hey, thanks a lot for clearing it up! :) Have to admit that I don't really look at the official protocol sheets and was going by what I remember popping up on TV, which showed no movement in her scores after the flip (which was apparently a 2F as well! Duh, how stupid can I get :hopelessness: ) so I thought she didn't get any credit.

Also have to shamefully admit that I seldom watch men's events when there's no Nathan at them :slink:, so I couldn't have compared Shoma's NHK SP to Nathan's.

Thanks again for the response! Truly appreciate it. :thank:

I was hoping for a clean Caravan but apparently he'll do it next time

Good luck for FS, I hope he can get the gold medal :hap36:

Thanks for all the references! :) I really ought to pay better attention to skaters other than Nathan. I admit I don't *really* watch most of the other men. None of their artistry and style really appeal to me as much as Nathan's do, but maybe I should give them a closer peep--if only to size up the competition better. ;-)

Again, thank you! Really appreciate how fast and kind you guys are in your responses. :luv17:

So happy for no edge call on his 4F and no unders (even on his 4T which he sadly made a mistake on). His 4F was flawless.
This program is legendary already. It has a character and a mood and it makes you wanna dance :yahoo:. And yaaaaay for levels 4 on everything!!!

Cute caption for Nathan and Shoma yesterday at the press conference:

Nathan’s jawline:luv17:

Thanks oatmella for this link, lifting my mood from reading some stupid comments. Hope both Nathan and Shoma have great performances tonight, and we will see two happier faces tonight, and hopefully they would not sit “5 feet apart” lol

Ahhh, Nathan is so good looking these few days, the jawline and the hair. Shoma looks great too, so does Mick

Yes, he said he really worked on those levels, undoubtedly due to his poor SP in France.
Article: Chen ahead in Vancouver at Grand Prix Final

I'm sure he's extremely annoyed with himself and I expect him to really attack the free.

I actually think he must have started working on those levels since SkAm, just probably even more motivated after IdF. I still think something was not right with IdF, he looked tense/cautious, and slow in the sp there.

Hoped that silly mistake would fire him up in the free.

Hahaha, go check out his IG story or this. Post something about “Go Yale”
