Nathan Chen

Might be a bit early to be thinking about next season’s GP - but if these dates are correct, Skate America will again be held during Yale’s fall break and NHK during Thanksgiving break. Though guess he might not be able to get NHK ... and GPF will be in Torino!

For a planner like Nathan, it's never too early.

i dont think Japan, will want Nathan competing at that nhk event with shoma or hanyu headlining. my big guest is nathan is going to usa for sure and prob china to be honest. they china is going ask for nathan to compete there

As long as he's at Yale I don't think he'd prefer China. If he doesn't get NHK he'd probably do (SkAm and) Skate Canada since it would be least disruptive to his school sched with less travel time. It would also be his decision as long as he remains top seed.

If you are a top ranked skater with your Fed, you get to choose at least one of your GP's. The other is usually an invite from the host country.

Usually someone like Nathan would get Skate America with no problems, but if he feels like he's won that event enough, he may choose others.

I know skaters who made it a goal to try to get a medal at every single grand prix over their careers.

If Nathan isn’t doing competitions prior to GP like this season, Skate America seems like a good choice for first competition.

NHK - I’m not sure about, even if he’s top seed. I’m assuming Yuzuru will get that assignment.

Skate Canada - Back to back competitions may or may not be a good thing. But he hasn’t competed there yet - and I also hope he will compete at Cup of China in the future.

Nice to see Shae-Lynn at Lakewood! Excited to see Caravan at Nationals:luv17: And also a cleaned-up Land of All:luv17:

I'm sure Nathan will get SkAm if he wants it. As for NHK, it usually goes to the top Japanese man who's ranked among the top 3 (each GP has to get one), Shoma this year. I don't know how that would work with Shoma 1st and Yuzu 3rd; Yuzu was not in the top 3 at the end of last season, and I guess the Japanese fed opted to separate Yuzu and Shoma for better results.

Nathan's decision to skip the summer competitions was costly in terms of ranking, he dropped to 2nd. Of course so many things will depend on the outcome of Worlds.

Oops, I meant I assume Yuzu or Shoma will get NHK.

I think at one point this season, Nathan was ranked 3rd. So moving up in ranking again!

Seedings are determined by placements at Worlds, not by rankings. So by winning Worlds Nathan was top seed. Uno was 2nd and Kolyada third. Hanyu was unseeded because he did not compete at Worlds. If Nathan, Shoma, and Yuzu are all in the top 3 at Worlds they can't meet until the Finals.

Thanks sheetz for clarifying. Nathan was ranked 1st after Worlds last year, so it could be confusing :p

Especially because Hanyu was unseeded, but it appears all the organizers decided to make him the defacto #3 seed instead of Kolyada.

I am just asking here before going to other threads;). Are there going to be open practices for nationals? If yes how can I watch? Couldn't find the schedule and dont know if I need to buy tickets for that.

Yup you're right, thanks for clarifying the seeding. Hahaha Hanyu got the same GPs as Kolyada I think he and/or the Japanese fed asked for it (better Kolyada than Nathan/Shoma), doesn't seem to be only coincidence.
