Nathan Chen

He plans 3 quads in FS? Hmmm... It looks like more close to SA layout than GPF.
Anyway, His layout is always changing So maybe accurate layout will be come out at FS day, let’s see what he choose.

The tweet is unclear to me. And true, who knows what his final layout will be :rolleye:

I’m guessing he will go for 4 quad FS again. But anything is possible with Nathan :p

He said he’s still playing around with layouts, layout will be similar to GPF ... seems unclear!

He got ‘some A’s and B’s sprinkled in’. Hope he got an A in Chem though - with that awesome class project video! Subliminated away lol

‘He wouldn’t commit to Four Continents if selected for it.‘

Raf wants him to come back to California!

Would Raf come to Yale then between Nats and the worlds? It would be too long not to have face to face training with Raf if he is not going to 4CC.

He mentioned something like he hoped Raf found his way to Yale during one of the interviews at SkAm, so far it was not happening and I don’t think it is realistic for Raf to come in spring given that Mariah, Brezina, probably Eunsoo going to be in Worlds also, and there is this Russian young skater who would probably stay in Lakewood until April.

Raf must either really miss him or was really frustrated with FaceTime to ask him to come back Cali.

“Bring back 4lz” maybe he means clean one? He really didn’t have good 4lz in competition this season, and I don’t think it is good idea to do in sp either. So far his 4T3T combo was not even that reliable.

I don’t know about Raf traveling to Yale. It doesn’t seem to be happening and Raf has a lot going on with his other students.

Nathan’s Spring break starts March 8th and mens SP is March 21st, so at least he will get training time with Raf prior to worlds.

I think he'd want to attempt 5 quads at Worlds.

He probably has to if he wants to win since he cannot do 2 3As like Shoma and Yuzuru. He needs to be on the podium so he has some leeway in choosing his GP.

France and Russia should be better choice for him since China is so far away, and would be better choice for Shoma and Yuzuru, even probably Misha.

Nathan just needs to win worlds again - no pressure!

Wonder if he might be attempting 5 quad FS at Nationals.

His 4T-3T is pretty reliable? He UR the 3T at idF and screwed it up in the GPF, but that's kind of a fluke there since he had been perfect all week. He also did a YOLO 4T-3T at the GPF in the SP after falling on the 4F. More often than not you can count on him to do a great 4T-3T anyway.

I don't know, I don't doubt him much. Everyone was yelling at him to drop the 4F and then he came back with a 4F with a GOE of 4.40.

5 quads at nationals I guess is a possibility, even if he doesn't need it. It'll be the only time he can really practice it in competition before worlds anyway.

The odd thing about the new rules is that being able to do two 3As is surprisingly not very advantageous since it means you can only do one -3T combo if you want to repeat a quad. In order to take advantage of the second 3A you would have to add a -3Lo combo or do like Yuzu and attempt something like a 4T3A sequence.

Nathan fell on 4F at IdF - not GPF :)

I am not worried about his 4T3T - though he missed that combo at GPF SP, it seems to have been a mental error

He didn’t fall on 4f during GPF, he fell on the 4t and missed the combo. He also missed the combo during the holiday show the previous weekend. I know it was good during practice, but in Raf and his words, it is what in competition that counts. He had perfect 4lz in his GPF practice, only to botch it in the competition.

I agree with practicing 5 quad layout in the nationals part. He did try 6 quads layout in Olympics before he did it again in Worlds last year.

I wish he would select some easier classes in spring, hopefully no more classes which he needs to carry around everyday, no more “ girl friend” lol.

Nathan will have to continue with Spanish to fulfill the foreign language requirement, and I assume he would take the next math course as that is required for all possible majors that he has mentioned.

Yeah, sorry got it mixed up but I still say his 4T-3T is his most reliable jump aside from triples. I think he'll prob concentrate on getting the 4lz back reliably since he hasn't done it well this season yet. But for nationals, I just want two clean programs and the FS to be a little upgrade in terms of choreography and for his SP to be a little cleaner overall (bonus points if he gets rid of the vest, but that might be wishful thinking )

I don't know when he did it (last week fans mentioned it on twitter), but he took out the Yale 2022 out of his bio. Now it's just Yale U.

Wow, I think I’m as much in awe of Nathan’s luck on the scheduling of Yale’s breaks as I am with his ability to get A’s and B’s while competing at the highest level 😮

Exactly.
Doing two 3As means a lower BV than doing just one (assuming no -3Lo combo).

But we should also keep in mind that Yuzu and Shoma have great 3As that they get high GOE for... that can actually make up for or even surpass the point difference in BV. But that is not an option for Nathan anyway, even though his 3A has looked better this season, so he really needs to focus on the quality of his quads, because that's what will get him the most points.
