Nathan Chen

Re Shoma having a 'sparring partner' in Nathan:
Are we even sure Nathan will be at Raf's this summer? Wasn't there talk about doing summer school? And add to that spending several weeks in Asia for shows and getting his new programs choreographed (I assume he might even prolong his stay at MFD's camp to work a little on his skating and performance skills?). He barely spent any time with Raf last summer too, AFAIR.

Yes, Nathan has said in interviews that he would be spending his time mostly in CA. Yale offers online summer courses so he'll be able to do those at home in the evening.

Last year he also had extra stuff like preparing for Yale, doing the Walmart M&G, visiting Bridgestone HQ, and going on the hiking trip, so this year might be a little less hectic. Champs Camp is also in Irvine.

It doesn’t seem ‘a little less hectic’ applies to Nathan - as soon as we think he might have a bit of downtime, he manages to be super busy again:p.

It didn’t seem like he was training with Raf that much last summer, but apparently enough so that Raf said he was looking quite amazing at Champs Camp. Hope he will get some more Raf training time this summer, and with sparring partners including Stephen, possibly Shoma, Kolyada if he returns, and whoever else lol.

New article: Nathan Chen discovers a world outside of figure skating at Yale

Interesting part:
He wants to continue skating and studying at Yale next season and beyond, though he’d lighten his academic load leading up to the 2022 Winter Olympics. He planned to discuss his next steps with his team.

I'm pretty sure you have to have a full course load at Yale so don't know how he'd lighten them much. Maybe he just means he'll go on leave.

I don’t think the usual policies necessarily apply to Nathan.

That said - who knows really. In the past few months he has said he might not continue at Yale even next year, to now possibly staying at Yale in some capacity until the Olympics.

I should have said you have to be a full-time student, which doesn't necessarily mean carrying a full course load. The article says he took 3 courses last semester when you are supposed to have 4. He's probably making up for that deficit over the summer.

Ultimately I guess he will want to continue as long as he can until he starts losing.

Three course credits per semester is the minimum. But I am fairly certain that the school is willing to cooperate with him, so that he can continue/graduate.

I am not sure if he dropped one class near the end of last semester or the newspaper made a mistake. Iirc he was taking four courses around Skate America: Math, English, Spanish and Chemistry. It was possible he dropped Chemistry near end since he did that Chemistry project near GPF time, but didn’t mention Chemistry during Meryl’s interview. He mentioned Math, English, Spanish in the interview.

His Chemistry book was on his book shelf in that picture he took during spring break.

I don’t think he would drop Chemistry that late in the semester? But maybe something had to give.

I doubt it too. It could be the newspaper made some mistake.

It mentioned he took 4courses in this NBC article back in January

“He was mixing quad Lutzes and courses in calculus, chemistry, Spanish and English”

https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2019...anding-on-his-feet-us-national-championships/

And I did remember there was other reports of him taking four courses around SkAm or the Japanese fans reported somewhere

Not all of these interviews are necessarily totally accurate:p

New York Times had ‘Quadruple axels and Calculus’ on their front page for the pre-Worlds Nathan feature.

Anyway he's not technically a sophomore until he completes 8 course credits so he has some work to do this summer.

Article from Nationals: https://www.teamusa.org/News/2019/J...ll-Won-Third-Straight-US-Figure-Skating-Title

He takes four courses a semester – last semester’s included chemistry, Calculus 1, Spanish and an English course (‘Dopamine And Its Discontents’), while two of this semester’s have yet to be determined – and is required to have eight credits by the end of the year in order to advance to his second year.
