Nathan Chen

According to Dave, at the show Nathan said he was exhausted. Who knows if Nathan actually said this.

Dave also thinks that the exhaustion will eventually catch up to him, in the form of sickness (um did he not follow him last season ...) or injury.

Okay... It was not surprising Nathan said he was exhausted. His schedule already looks like crazy. ( and also agree with you. Who know it was true or not? lol) But about sickness and injury, Dave definitely didn’t follow Nathan last season:slink:
Sometime they didn’t know Junior essential jump for the season, so it also not surprising for me:noshake:

TSL was really negative about Nathan this whole season (the whole he's barely hanging on thing) and said he HAD to take off school to have any possible chance of winning worlds. When he won they kind of ignored they ever said all that. Dave's just back to he has to stop going to school again thing as usual. And Nathan was pretty much sick all season long.

Though on a more positive note, last week they also mentioned Sandra Bezic fell in love with Nathan at ATS. Don't know if she told him that or not. But they seem to talk to her a lot. And Dave wanted Nathan to get Sandra and Lori to collab and do a program for him (uh, not happening I don't think). He doesn't seem to like Shae's work for whatever reason.

Actually the fact that Nathan being sick almost all season long tells me that he should not continue this crazy schedule. School/competitions/shows - instead of doing all three, can’t he just pick two?

It was very tricky. He should earn money for skating and school, so he should do show in off- season. (Almost every skater are same. The show gave them a big income). And he already in a school, it also tricky to rest it. They have their policy.
Everyone expected it was hard and crazy for balancing those three. I know people concerned about Nathan. But he did it.Actually, pretty well.

Dave really likes nathan. He just wants nathan to skate to the full potential, not some kind of "part-time" job. As for school, he seems hate it because of the reduce of skating time.

TSL has ranged from pretty much ignoring Nathan after some of his wins, to last week’s episode - saying he’s really capable of a very high level, if he reaches his full potential.

Dave seems excessively narrow-minded to me, he has pigeon-holed Shae-Lynn as a choreographer only for edgy, or fun/showgirl-type programs. He certainly doesn’t seem to like her programs - even still mentioning Ashley’s La La Land, in this most recent episode.

Dave doesn't really care much about men's skating but he's figured out people tune in to see what he has to say about the popular skaters. He didn't talk about Nathan much at all this week but still made sure to include him in the show title.

During the U.S. Nationals recap, the only reason Nathan even got a minute’s worth of recognition is because Scott Dwyer mentioned that Nathan was in a league of his own and chatted for a few moments about him. Same with their Sandra Bezic interview. If she had not brought Nathan up, they would not have talked about him at all. Also, barely a mention of Nathan during their World’s recap. Not sure I understand why they tend to ignore him.

Lol who cares about TSL anyway, they're like just friend's chatting on camera, we can all record ourselves talking and upload it on social media :disapp:

Congrats to Alice! Maybe another Chen family gathering next year!

Like I said, Dave doesn't really care much about men's skating (pretty sure he has even admitted to this) so don't expect him to say much about men except when there's some drama involved.

Prince Ice World begins this Saturday. I'm not too familiar with the show format but don't think there is much in the way of group numbers to rehearse. On the other hand it appears Sapporo is not easy to reach by plane so he'll have to leave the US by tomorrow. I haven't been able to find any info about a TV broadcast, however there is a period after the show where the skaters can meet up close with the fans to answer some questions so we may hear some interesting reports from that.

It doesn't seem like Nathan needs day to day coaching anymore. I guess if he and Raf can facetime when he is at Yale they can facetime when he is on the road as well. I would expect him to head back to Cali before going to Japan since he'll be staying in Japan for almost two weeks.

I believe he's supposed to do an interview with Jack Gallagher sometime between PIW and DOI but otherwise there should be down time to relax in between the two shows. DOI is more of a gala than a show so there's hardly any need for group number rehearsal.

This was last year's DOI. I think this was the last time Nathan performed Nemesis. He's improved so much that he's like a different skater now.

The interview with Jack G. doesn’t need to be in person, so it could be done any time when he is free in Japan.

I think Raf still prefers face to face training with him, at least that is what Phil was saying in the most recent pod cast. Nathan got his 4lz back when he finally saw Raf during worlds, and his 4f didn’t really come back like what he did at nationals and GPF. He had to change sp layout because of that, and he almost botched the 4lz in sp. Jackie mentioned that his jumps were off axis in the beginning of the week, and he was thinking Nathan was going to be off podium. To me Raf is on board with it only because there is no other choice. He still refers to it as Skype, so I seriously doubt how many sessions they had.

I hope he would get another interview with Spur this year, and they would follow up with the Montreal thing.

At Worlds Nathan had been sick and adjusting to the time difference so I don't think you can make definitive conclusions. But the fact that he was able regain jumps so quickly suggests that he doesn't need daily monitoring. He's probably ok as long as he isn't away from Raf for too long.

I don’t think Nathan necessarily needs daily monitoring.

But it does seem that he makes the most progress (at least with his jumps) when he is able to spend time with Raf. Such as last summer (supposedly he was in great form at Champs Camp), post-Winter break at Nationals, those few days of practice at Worlds.

Let’s be realistic, the odds of Nathan improving his tech on his own, is kind of low. He has shown he can maintain what he has, mostly on his own. Maintaining can work for next season, and I’m not of the thought that he has to win everything.

If he is able to maintain what he was capable of last season, plus school - that would already be quite amazing. Hope he isn’t sick like he was last season:pray:

As for Dave, the show may be gossipy, and seemingly anyone could do it - but we are watching (at least the Nathan parts :p) and he does have a voice/platform. Though I wouldn’t take him not predicting Nathan to win Worlds as anything, Jackie didn’t predict him to win either - and Jackie clearly loves him.

Sapporo to Yokohama is quite far. I assume he would fly there.

There’s a ramen museum in Yokohama:)

Well, Nathan did pretty much bring the 4S back at WTT by himself so I wouldn't say he can't raise his tech without Raf. Maybe he wouldn't have been able to do that with 4Lo but it sounds like the 4S is the goal for next season.

Nathan was practicing 4s at Nationals and Worlds, he gave up on 4s at the last minute during Nationals, and for worlds, he gave up 4s around March 19th. He was still practicing it on the 18th.

He had little time to train between worlds and WTT, so I wouldn’t say definitely he got the 4s back totally on his own.

Jackie knows Nathan pretty well, he should be able to tell from the practices what were the impacts of jetlags and what is not.

I agree with oatmella on the maintenance part. He can beat his rivals when he is in top form with his “reserves”, to borrow Raf’s words. Raf would probably be the only person who knows how good Nathan could be if he spend more time with Raf. Or maybe the people who watched him at Champs camp might have some idea how good he can be.

He mentioned he was nowhere at he should be at in the interview after IdF. Raf has plans for him. I hope he would be asked the question where he is at in terms of Raf’s plan for him.

Hope he can have some good rest and relax several days between PIW and DOI. But Yale summer session is about to end, so I doubt how much rest he would have.

In theory, ending summer session should be better for him, right? That would be one less thing on his plate. Or was he planning on doing both sessions?

I imagine he'll try to bring back the quad loop when he gets more time with Raf. I remember him saying he was trying to bring it back on his own before tabling it.
