Nathan Chen

He skates last in the FS.

IDF has a reputation for bad ice and bad everything else, so I wouldn't be surprised.

He has like a 20 point gap with everyone but Samarin. Anybody know what Samarin’s planned content is for his free skate? Like how many quads?

Better start to both Grand Prix than last year by a good margin. It’s good for him not to be peaking too early so I’m comfortable with the mistakes. It’s right in the middle of midterms so I’m gonna cut him some slack lol

Good he’s going last, he can see how everyone else does and decide if he needs to go with a 4th quad or not.

3 quads for Samarin

Nathan's also says 3, but I'm sure that 3T is a 4T in reality.

And yes, he's in a good place right now. He's doing better SPs than last season at this time of year, regularly breaking 100 and is building up to his final layout. He also only had one lvl 3.

He seemed surprised by the 3a landing and said the 4T was shaky, which I didn't even notice? :scratch2:

Is it just me, or did he seem somewhat timid? Only up until the StSq of course, which was really beautifully done.

I felt that this was the first time he really matched the music during the intro choreo/footwork. In all the outings prior to this one, it just generally fit the restless vibe of the music, but in this instance his movements were actually executed on those musical accents or the sung words.

Funnily enough, the landing of his 4F was also on the beat of the string music, but I don't think this is something he's necessarily aiming for? But I'm sure Shae put that jumping pass there precisely because it goes nicely with the music either way, even if it's not landed on the beat.

I was surprised that his StSq was perfectly on the music as well this time, since in that runthru during practice this morning he was ahead of the music which had me going: :drama:.

I'm sure that as the season goes on, he's going to put the combo back in the second half of the program... I hope that despite the extra time needed for that, he will still be able to jump on the music and be right on it during the step sequence too. Because those constant changes to the jump layout are messing with the general timing of each segment of the program.

I'd guess he's working towards a 4lz3t as the first jumping pass.

Hope he has better luck with his 3a tomorrow!

Looks like he plans to do 4lz3t 3a 4f and then put the combo on the 4f if he misses with the 4lz.

Short quote from article:
https://olympics.nbcsports.com/2019/11/01/nathan-chen-grand-prix-france-short-program/
“One week is difficult between competitions,” said Chen, who is skipping Yale sophomore classes to compete in France. “Two weeks, you have time to recover, rest and then start building back up. … But having one week, it’s like two days of travel, two days of travel, and then three days of actual training.”

I try not to focus on anything besides what I have to do. Everything else is just a distraction.
The program is a little messy, I'm not quite satisfied with the 3A. I was able to get a good score and now I just focus on the long.
Just recap what happened, try to fix that for tomorrow, later on just recover, get sleep, and then tomorrow start fresh.
I just think about what I did, watch the program.
I can't go train, I can't go practice, so right now all I can do is, you know, get food, sleep, recover. Nothing really super specific.

Apparently there were puddles on the ice yesterday? That’s dangerous, no wonder so many skaters made uncharacteristic mistakes. I hope they fix that for today

I hope this is a good place to ask--I'm at IdF and I have a small gift for Nathan (a t-shirt). What's the best way to get it to him? What I mean is, if I throw it onto the ice and it gets picked up by the sweepers, will be actually see it, or will it go straight into a donation pile? Would it be better to try to give it to him directly in the KnC?

Thanks for any help! And there have definitely been visible puddles on the ice.

Not a great skate, but I honestly think the ice is horrible? His landings were all off for the most part.

I'm glad he won, got into the finals and can rest for a couple weeks. 8 straight wins :hap10:

Max GOE on his chsq again.

Not sure how much we can blame the ice, didn’t he do well at practice on the same ice?Just a relief that he won. :)

Under the circumstances it was an okay skate. At least he finally landed the 3 jump combo.

My understanding is that the ice conditions can change when the rink is filled with people.

I would think the ice would get worse as the competition goes on. And people were saying how hot it was in there during the competition. I saw no puddles today, but still. His landings were perfectly fine in practice. I know he's had off skates after perfect practices though. Maybe he's just tired.

Anyway, he can rest now. I'm glad he finally got his 4T1Eu3F. https://twitter.com/nathanchengifs/status/1190636724449234944
