Nathan Chen

Apparently, Nathan remembers his twitter password and is on Twitter today to retweet a quote from Salt aLake Olympic Committe 😄😄

”One of the best quotes from today's Salt Lake Olympic Committee meeting came from
@USOPC_CEO
Sarah Hirshland: "There is nowhere in the world better positioned and better equiped to host a Winter Games than Utah & Salt Lake!"

The whole Tara and Johnny pep talk, commentary etc. was pure second-hand embarrassment. :rolleye:
Nathan looked so pleased with himself after his skate. 😄

Glad the 2nd 4T combo looked much improved this time.
Still wish they'd elaborate the choreo sequence, though *sigh. And while they're at it, go back to the very first music cut, too. 😭

Sounds like Nathan is taking part in the Aerial Challenge airing this Friday. Not exactly sure how this works, but I read there is also a backflip challenge...

ETA: OK, from what I gather, elite male skaters have to submit video for 3 rounds of competition:

Round 1: 3 jump combination, including at least 2 different triples
Round 2: Triple axel combination of unlimited jumps
Round 3: Back to back quads (bonus for different quads)

Oh, and backflip challenge was on Nov 6 so he missed the deadline.:ROFLMAO:

In theory we could see 4T+3T+3Lo for Rd 1 and 4A, 4Lo for Rd 3. Not sure what he would try for Rd 2, as I don't remember him ever doing anything more than 3A+2T.

That’s quite some combinations 😂

The prelim Beijing Olympics schedule is out:

Feb 4 09:30-14: 35 Team event (Men's Women's SP, RD)
Feb 6 09:30-13:35 Team event (Pair SP, Men's FS)
Feb 7 10:30-14:00 Team event (Pair FS, FD, Women's FS)

Feb 8 09:15-13:30 Men SP
Feb 10 09:30-13:40 Men FS

Feb 11 19:00-22:40 RD
February 13 10:00-13:35 FD

Feb 15 18:00-22:25 Women SP
Feb 17 18:00-22:10 Women FS

Feb 18 18:30-21:45 Pair SP
Feb 19 19:00-22:05 Pair FS

The men’s SP is too close to the team event

Wow, have to say I'm impressed. I didn't know he could jump a 3A in sequence, I kinda thought he needs the flow of a good entry edge to 'get into' the jump in the right way. Looks like Raf has been drilling those 3As into him. 😅

Obviously it's still a different story during a real competition, being tired and all, but interesting that he could in theory tack on a 3A on a jump, even when there's little speed left (which is obviously the case after he's already done the +3F combo).

Speaking of 3A, I still don't like the fact, that it's his last jumping pass in his FS... seems unnecessarily problematic. I guess it means they're really gearing up for a 6 quad program, so he wants to get all the quads out first...? :rolleye:

Tom uploaded Nathan's 2nd Round combo: 3A+1Eu+3F+3A+1Eu+2S+2T (SEQ)

"How many points will @nathanwchen earn for this 3A combination which he performs during the second round of [...] Virtual Aerial Figure Skating Challenge. You might be surprised!"

That is a good question. Not sure how the BV reduction because of sequence works. Does it affect all the jumps, or just the one jump before the Axel-type jump or all the jumps that came before it?
(Probably not worth it and better to add a bunch of 3Ts, but that would make for a boring jumping pass for an event such as this Aerial Challenge)

And that second Euler looks UR so he might've lost 0.1 points there. ;)
(But tbh, I've seen loads of very obviously under-rotated Eulers in actual competitons from all the top men who regularly do Euler-Combos and it's very, very rarely been called, so not sure anyone pays that much attention to it, I guess unless it's a pet peeve of the TC or sth. like that)

Well, once he does a quad-quad, he obviously will have an extra slot for two 3As in his free skate

4T-4T
4F-3T
4Lo
4Lz
4S
3A-Eu-3F
3A

And if he gets a 4A, easy peasy, move it to the front of the program and get rid of the 3A!

I’m kidding, I’m kidding.... 😅

I wonder if a 4F+4T combo would satisfy the requirements for Rd 3? If Nathan can do 4-4 consistently I'm sure Raf would want to submit video evidence to ISU so they would allow it in the SP.

Yes, way too close. At least Nathan wouldn't have to do both SP and FS, and whoever does FS probably doesn't have to go all out. I assume US is favored for silver. Bronze is maybe China's?
