Nathan Chen

Well, once he does a quad-quad, he obviously will have an extra slot for two 3As in his free skate

4T-4T
4F-3T
4Lo
4Lz
4S
3A-Eu-3F
3A

And if he gets a 4A, easy peasy, move it to the front of the program and get rid of the 3A!

I’m kidding, I’m kidding.... 😅
You never know. Nathan might surprise us with something ridiculous.

(Probably not worth it and better to add a bunch of 3Ts, but that would make for a boring jumping pass for an event such as this Aerial Challenge)

Apart from being more exciting, an euler in the combo can probably help him get some more speed going into the next jump. It'd be difficult to tag a 3T to that second 3A.

His 3A-1Eu-3F is so pretty! In addition to having a real euler jump, his euler combos always have a nice and crisp rhythm to them. And that flip tap is just so satisfying to watch.

Seems like this Aerial Challenge event does not limit how many tries a skater can take when they are filming their jumps. Wondering what his 3A-euler combo consistency is like in practice.

There's no limit to tries but all 3 rounds have to be filmed in one take within a span of 3 minutes. So even though this combo wasn't perfect he may not have wanted to film all three rounds again if the other two rounds were much better.

Ugh, I sure hope he's not training a quad-quad. Where is this even coming from?
There's really no incentive to do one, too much risk of UR and bad GOE and too exhausting on top of this many quads and 3As. Doing 5 or 6 quads on their own is already enough points, never mind exhausting and difficult enough.

And who knows if he will ever be able to regain a shape that allows him to do 6 quads in one program, since he's older now and his body surely had some more 'wear and tear' since last Olys, too.
Personally I think 5 is already pushing it, if you want them to be of good quality (never mind being able to perform your program).

A quad-quad would only be a real advantage in the SP, and I don't see the ISU making such a big change to the SP rules one season before Olys.

He answered the question of how many quads planned for Beijing Olympics in one of the three OSC class sessions. IIrc, he said something like if everyone else is planning 5 or 6 quads, then 6 quads is necessary. If not, the it is not necessary.

He further said that it is very painful to train for 6 quads program as it is draining both physically and mentally. I couldn’t remember if he used the word “one hit wonder” or something like that to describe a 6 quad program.

On top of the things 1111bm mentioned about age and stamina, FS is 30 seconds shorter than in 2018. I believe his priority this season is experimenting all kinds of combinations, layouts, or “cook different meals” in Tara or Raf’s words. He definitely is training 6 quad program, but more as a backup or endurance plan so he is better prepared for all situations.

I hope Raf would get USFSA to let him do SP for the Olympics. He wants the redemption of the SP, not FP.

Rd 1: 4F+3T+3Lo
Rd 2: First attempt: 3A+3A+1Eu+2S. We've already seen the 2nd attempt. I couldn't figure out why he got a second attempt but after looking the rules it looks like you can make multiple attempts for each round as long as the total video length for all 3 rounds is no more than 3 minutes. They didn't fully count the 2nd attempt because it's a sequence. LOL

Gotta say my perception of Nathan's axel ability has changed a lot over the past month😂

I love watching a nicely done loop combo, even though Nathan is not too keen about performing it.
