I'm interested in hearing what folks plans are for transportation at nationals. There is the bus I know, but anyone find anything good - esp. from the airport to their hotel? I'm trying to avoid shelling out $30 bucks each way for a cab ride to/from downtown and the airport.

Look at the bus schedule--google metro transit (or they have a link on the Nationals site). I know there are busses from the airport into town. Unfortunately, it's going to be bitter cold during Nationals week.

what is "bitter cold" - it's -10 here this week and I'm wearing a fleece jacket...

The US Nationals shuttle is 30 bucks for the week... I'm snagging me that pass.

Haven't figured out how I'm getting to my hotel yet.

Many hotels have shuttles to and from the airport. Have you checked with yours? Some are even free. Ours does - $13 each way, but it's worth it to me for the convenience.

That's true but check idt out before you arrive. Mine has id included and since I bouth the whole ticket, I have transport from hotel to the Extel Arena.

It's important to have transportation handy at the close of each night back to your hotel. The mob of people leaving can make things confusing.

Thanks for the tip. I won't have to worry about transport between hotel and arena as I'm at the Holiday Inn right across the street. Phew! Another reason I don't mind the shuttle fee. Can walk everywhere else I'll plan to go. :agree:

Airport transportation

I don't have a free ride from the airport to my hotel, so I booked on SuperShuttle. There is information on the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport website about SuperShuttle. The phone number is 1-800-258-3826. You can pay for one way - $13 or round trip $26. On the phone they gave me the option of paying by credit card or cash to the driver. Reservations are suggested (though I used them in Dallas a few years ago without a reservation).

This is a large van with a number of other people and they go to all the hotels. I rode a van last year in Spokane with Ben Agosto  and Brooke Castile. Its not as quick as a taxi since you may stop at several other hotels before you get to yours...but the upside is you get to see some of the city. Lots cheaper than a taxi!

Joe are you staying at the Kelly Inn? That's where we'll be staying.
Yeah. That was the one with the lowest price. I'm sure it will be fine and it is on the route to Excel.

I arrive on Monday, so I will miss Junior Ladies SP.on Sunday but should make it for Novice Ladies on Monday. From Tuesday on, I'll probably see everthing. I don't normally go to practices anymore. What you see in practice is not what you get in competition.

btw. Does Heather have invites to the USFS Breakfast on Sunday morning? if she is a volunteer she should have it. The breakfasts are kind of fun. You can have your picture taking with all the 'stars' who show up, so bring your camera. Kimmie will be there as well as Ben Agosto. Can be anyone who has already skated. Doubt Evan and Johnny will be there but maybe Adam Rippon.

Thanks for the tip about the SuperShuttle. I think I'm going to do that just so I don't have to worry about going to and from the airport. :)

Joe: I don't have any invites right now but maybe that's something I get when I get to St. Paul? I have no idea. I wasn't able to go to the official training that they do every year for volunteers (I've never gone to that although I probably will for Cleveland since I can actually drive to that one, LOL) but I'll be talking to the chairperson not long after I arrive on Sunday morning. I'll definitely have to ask her about that because it sounds like fun! :)

Heather - Do get a ticket to the Breakfast. You hobknob with everyone. It's a hoot and sometimes the food is excellent. And you can watch the practice for the exhibitions.

Is this really true? What a perk if it is. I have a FoFS membership and RSVP'd with a yes for the breakfast. Am really looking forward to this as yet another part of my first Nationals! If the EX practice is part of the deal, I really got a bonus!!

Transit info

There's a bus that goes from the airport to downtown St. Paul (right past the xcel center, actually). The bus number is 54, and it runs about every fifteen minutes. Follow the signs in the airport. The cost is $2.00 from 6AM until 9Am and 3PM until 6:30PM Monday through Friday, and $1.50 at all other times.

If you're staying in downtown Minneapolis, there is a train from the airport that runs on a similar schedule and for the same price. You can transfer from one to the other. Both the bus and train also run to the Mall of America.

If you need additional transit information (for example if you need to know how close the bus or train gets to you hotel and whether you may need to transfer) you can check it out online at www.metrotransit.org.

Bus

Thanks for the tip on the 54 bus....I'm going to use that to go to Mall of America.

I am just not nimble enough to handle my checked and carry on bags on the bus  I'd probably do a triple splutz trying to board!

Cold, cold, cold!

Hello everyone and welcome to Minnesota!

Though some of you are coming from cold climates I'd imagine our extreme cold may be new to some of you.

The best way to dress is to layer, a t-shirt or cammy under a turtleneck with a sweatshirt over and then a warmer jacket. Any exposed flesh will suffer so bring a fleece scarf and a hat or headband. Feet will always be cold in tennis shoes so a thick soled shoe or boot is best, with one or two pairs of socks, again layer.

This extreme cold is no joke and can be very dangerous. A walk of a block or two can be painful, especially if the wind blows. Don't forget gloves, but if you have mittens they keep your fingers warmer longer.

If you have access to those handwarmers bring a few, sometimes I stick them in my boots.

I hope you all have a wonderful time, the downtown area is looking magical with lighted trees and snow.

Enjoy and be safe!

Thanks for taking the time to give us all a few tips.

Being from Michigan some of them I knew but the double socks for the arena is a really great suggestion. My feet did get cold at SA - my first competition attendance.

had to laugh at the extreme cold... but that's just Alaskan arrogance coming out ;)

Cold

Yeah, I suppose it's going to be downright balmy for you hardy Alaskan sorts.:yes:

We'll know you because you'll be in a tropical shirt and shorts. This I gotta see!

The rest of us will be the ones dressed like Michelin men and women, red noses and frozen fingers.

The good news is is that it should be back in the mid-to-upper 20s starting next Wednesday. This weekend is going to be downright bitter, though.
