New Format for Dancing With the Stars

If I remember correctly, a good Samba would be thrusting forward then backwards.

In general, I would say hips should undulate rather than swing side to side in any Carribbean Dance. But that could be my taste.

Joe

Kinda sorta. It's not really a thrusting action. Samba's characterized by the count one, a-two, three, a-four, with what a bounce on the "a-" acomplished through foot-knee-ankle action. It's accompanied by Cuban hip action, which as you say is not swinging per se, but done with a 'figure eight' motion (that's also directly related to foot pressure and knee action.) Pretty much all Latin and Rhythm except Paso Doble (?), Swing and Jive involve Cuban hip action. I have so far tried all the Latin dances except Paso Doble (the irony, it burns--that's my favorite) and Samba's my weakest, I think because of that stupid extra bounce. Getting the hip action right is hard enough without it! In spite of their being wicked hard to balance on, I like steps like corta jaca that are done 'flat' (without the bounce or hip action.)

I did like the demonstration of the hips moving like the movements of a snake. That's what I think of 'sexy' and not swinging hips side to side. Just my taste.

Couldn't watch that part!!! UGH!!!

Dee

if someone brought in a snake like that for me I'd be screaming and running out of the place never to be seen again.
couldn't believe it when wayne and jennie were still in it.

I haven't watched the latest episode but my daughter called to tell me not to watch the part with the snake. She knows how scared I am. My husband used to get up before me and if there was a picture of a snake in the paper he would cut it out before I got up. Talk about being spoiled! I so miss it.

Do you think Wayne has a chance??

Dee

To make it past this week's elimination? Sadly, yes. To make it to the finals? Oh, I hope not. He is the worst "older gentleman" the show has had. George Hamilton had looks. Jerry Springer had humor. John Ratzenberger was a decent dancer. Newton is just immobile and orange.

Bye-bye, Wayne! (I feel sorry for Cheryl, but ugh.)

I'm not sure who I want to see go next. I honestly like Mark Cuban's attitude, ditto Floyd. Cameron or Marie, the non-entities, I suppose. Not that it'll change my voting--I'll just keep throwing everything Jane and Tony's way.

The lady model (who, just like the model and Miss USA last season, wasn't great but definitely not the worst) had to go because she doesn't have a fan base AND is automatically going to be on the receiving end of the attentions of the 'I Hate Barbie' brigade.
The male model/surfer had to go because he doesn't have a fan base, pure and simple. I thought he did great, and was VERY sad to see Miss Trebunskaya  go.......
That's where DwtS' s true personality as a semi-scripted popularity contest comes through.
Good riddance to Wayne Newton, please do keep him off of any future dance floors.
The only reason Marie Osmond is still there is, you guessed it, her massive popularity.
Not being of that generation, I'm not sure how she acquired said popularity, but it's there and it's keeping her afloat.
Nothing against Jane Seymour, she does an excellent job, but in all reality, she got triple 9's because her mom had died.
Her tango was good, but not triple 9's good.......
I think she could do even better than she does if her partner could forget that she is 56 and also forget how much in awe he is of her (which is quite obvious).
If he can pretend she's 25 - shouldn't be THAT hard.... - they could win.
Without a doubt the best dancer of the bunch is Sabrina Bryan, but she does have an unfair advantage, since dancing is part of what she does for a living.
Not ballroom dancing perhaps, but still.......
As much as I'd hate to see Kym Johnson  leave the show, the billionaire needs to go.
He's trying, but......
I'm also not sure why everyone seems to think Helio Castornevez is so 'hot' or great.
He does have the massive advantage of having Julianne Hough -who may be the best and most driven of the pro teachers - as a partner, but I don't think he should be in the finals.
They said at the beginning of the season that 'it's time for a woman to win' , which was probably a hint.......

Jane Seymore is really Plain Jane. She carefully takes each step one step at a time and it just doesn't flow. Nothing lyrical or elegant to excite me. Will be held up for sympathy.

I disagree. I think she dances like an agile, adept woman who is over the age of 50. Compare her to Tony Dovolani's partner last season, Leeza Gibbons, who danced like she was terrified to put one foot in front of the other. Jane Seymour flows quite nicely. It's her partner's job to make the most of what she has. She isn't 25. If she was, she'd probably mop the floor with Sabrina Bryan. But she's 56 and has a bad back. If he treated her like she's 25, it would look ridiculous.

Marie Osmond has a hugely successful doll business. There are a lot of women and maybe a few men who've been buying her dolls for more than a decade. Add to that people in their 40s and up who are fans from the Donny & Marie days. Add to that women 40 and over who identify with her as a working mom who is once again single. Then there is her charity work. That's a lot of fans.

In every season there are some celebrities who stand out and some who are so-so. They get eliminated one week at a time. You may hate five people and want to see them gone. It takes five weeks to get there. I'm just glad Wayne Newton got sent back to Las Vegas. He really bothered me. After that, let the mambos fall where they may. I don't particularly like Melanie Brown, but the jive was quite decent.

Sabrina is probably going to win the whole thing. She has the backing of the pre teen and early teen group and anyone who watches the Disney Channel since the Cheetah Girls are huge right now.

I don't know how much of DWTS audience consiste of preteens. If teen girls are part of the audience, they are more likely to vote for the guy they find the most attractive.

You also have to consider the creativity of the choreography. Joey Fatone's Star Wars number was really popular and he was not the best dancer.

While Jane is in her 50's, she does have all those years of ballet training to support her. Her sense of posture and line is instrinsic now and the judges love that stuff and will keep her up there.

Helio's dance this week was weak. He might've been holding back because of his weak foot. The guy's got charisma and I don't know how much of the race car fan base watches DWTS enough to keep in. I think he'll stay in because he can dance and he is fun to watch.

Of the remaining dancers, i find Floyld the hardest to watch at this point. I think he's got the capability, but he's got to open up his shoulders to make this type of dancing better, at least in appearance.

Cam has got to loosen up and put more of his personality out there. He remindes of Ian from last season - waiting for a light bulb moment before it's too late. The soap opera fan base will keep him going for a while though.

Whatever dance it is this coming week, Jane will do it precisely the way a cultured lady should. Marie will put in a bit a pizzaz into it. Nothing of these styles have anything to with show biz. Jane had a good run and not too long ago with two hit TV shows. Marie had her problems giving birth.

and I reiterate my original remark at the very first contest of this TV show, that men will not vote in this competition except family and friends.

There are two top dancers that I can see: The NASCAR guy and Sabrina. Pick your choice.

Joe

Actually Jane has very nice flow and lovely lines. I'm concerned for her in Latin--she doesn't necessarily have the snap for it, but frankly few women her age do! She'd do quite well in...iirc she'd be in Ladies B level of pro-am. At least in Int. Standard. I wonder how much her back is affecting what she's doing--that's where she'd be in trouble in Silver, Gold, or Open Smooth. And yes, her big, big plus over Leeza from last season is she obviously has no hangups about it.

Sabrina, on the other hand, may be in some trouble when it comes to dances like smooth waltz or International Rhumba, where you can't use tricks to cover technique. However, yes, there's her fan base, and the girl has stage presence and knows how to use it.

Helio--honestly I just can't get excited about him. Yeah, his footwork on jive was better than the other guys, mostly.

OT Shameless Self Promotion: If anyone would like to see a (small, not very exciting) rendition of my own dancing:

http://www.dancesizzle.com/Competit...tstrip/2/Default.aspx?path=Supershag/Showcase

Go to page 2 and click on "Tibor and Jennifer". This was the studio showcase--most of these are pros and students. This is me and my pro doing an American Rhumba showcase. And browse the others--some are pretty darned cool. Check out "Peter and Katie" or "Chris and Louise" for some jive. Watch their feet, too--Peter's an actively-competing Latin pro, Chris was a Blackpool finalist and US Open Am.Latin champion, and they know how to jive. I wish the video were brighter so it was clearer how much up on the balls of their feet they are. With Peter, at least, you can see how he points and finishes lines very, very fast. And check out "Peter and Lisa" (different Peter), just because their Argentine Waltz is so darn nifty, and "Tibor and Emily" for a contemporary Rhumba that is almost too hot for TV. (Best. Rhumba. EVER. And I am usually bored to TEARS by anyone's Rhumba.)

Juliet - Very impressed with your Rhumba.
When I was at High School dances, the no. 1 hit tune for it was "Siboney", and when you danced to it, it had to be a slow dance, hips undulating but not shaking and above all a look of elegance for expression. It was not chickabooboom music a la Carmen Miranda.

Joe

Still no idea what's supposed to be so great about Helio.
With any partner other than Julianne, he'd be toast by now.
As much as I hate to see Kym Johnson go, Mr. Cuban's gotta go.
So does Mrs. Osmond.
Kary-Ann (sp?) needs to quit the teary-eye BS.
No one's buying.
And please give Bruno some kind of pill so he doesn't blow an artery next time Scary Spice shows up......
The more I watch of this season, the more I become convinced that a woman will win (is in fact scheduled to win....), and I'm guessing it'll be between Sabrina and Jane, hard to guess who's got the bigger fan base watching the show.
Jennie Garth - who did the Paso tablecloth, erm, cape, to PERFECTION - could be a dark horse, she does really well!
Now THAT is Mrs. Robinson.......;)
