There is a reporter who works for the Province newspaper who is hosting a blog on coverage of the Canadian Figure Skating Championships here in Vancouver. I guess he normally covers hockey, anyway read this from some disgruntled hockey fans and see why hockey always takes precedence here in the great white north:

I am hoping this is just someone's idea of a joke.

Um.. it is The Province, after all and no one said that Canucks fans had any taste:rofl: Not to mention so poorly written, it took tremendous focus to actually read it -- so no danger of the 'hockey fans' figuring out that it was dissing figure skating.....they might actually think figure skating was cool because it was being trashed, so to speak!

It's this guy's opinion and from the way he writes, not likely someone who could carry on a decent conversation above a grade 3 level so not to worry too much. The fact that he does not like FS is actually a boon to the sport.:laugh::p

As an aside, would he have all judged sports canned? What about diving, gymnastics, etc. :p

Also, I recall a friend coaching a hockey team (little guys around 10-12 age range) and he brought in a former FS to teach skating skills. At first the guys protested and were 'insulted' but they were even more surprised when it became clear they had a lot to learn from this FS!!;):biggrin:

Shall I bother to send a comment to this idiot?

Did he finish grade 12 or did he drop out of school at grade 10? Duh!

I love the quip by someone who replied that 'Kristy Yamaguchi could probably skate circles around Bret Hedican"...I know they are married, but I bet it's a true statement.

Figure skating has been shown to be the BEST place to acquire the basic skills of skating. Then a skater can choose which way to go from there.

What a dunce!

I'm glad you posted that link, Ladskater, only because it includes links to articles written by other reporters who do seem to take figure skating seriously. :rolleye:

BTW, there was once a time in Canada when ratings for major figure skating events were right up there with Stanley Cup playoff game ratings. Granted, that was during the boom years of the early '90s, but I'm willing to bet there's a lot more figure skating fans in this country than some people want to admit.

And for a couple of guys who think "figure skating is the worst sport in the world," they sure know a lot about Canadian figure skaters who "choked" at the Olympics. :rolleye:

The post seemed to me at least a little tongue-in-cheek, if not overtly so, because isn't their #1 complaint just that their blog is getting bumped off the front page and therefore not as visible? That's such an obviously self-centered reason for this proclamation of hatred of the sport (while in the meantime, providing a ton of links to the coverage and, as astimegoesby says, seeming to know a lot about it), that it feels almost like they're trying to be funny rather than really seriously dissing figure skating. I could be giving them too much credit. Though if that is their intention, they're being a bit too subtle about it =).

Well, I happen to have a pretty decent sense of humour and I know tongue in cheek funny when I see it. I'm a huge fan of Rick Mercer, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert after all, so usually that's right up my alley.

This? This was not funny nor tongue in cheek. This was a rant by two guys whining about one of the Premier non hockey sporting events any city in Canada can host and the articles produced by it, bumping their precious little blog off of the main page. Well, too damn bad!! It's only for a week after all and then they can get back to posting about their precious Canucks. I'm sure the Province is just thrilled over the negative response this is giving their paper too.

Yeah...Yeah...I know. More than likely not, but it still doesn't make them look good to the wider world out there, does it?

These two guys not only need an infusion of some working brain cells, but they need a swift kick in the butt too.

These guys crossed the line between tongue-in-cheek funny to not-so-funny with their #3 reason at the end of the article, IMO. They're certainly entitled to dislike figure skating all they want, but putting down otherwise successful skaters for "choking" (their word, not mine) at the Olympics definitely doesn't make them look good.
