Old School On Youtube

Perhaps because they only did doubles and a few triples, what I miss that these "old school" programs have that programs nowadays seem to lack are the moves before the jumps. Nowadays, before a jump, the choreography seems to stop--especially with the quad for the men, or the triple axel and the triple lutz for the women, it becomes more of a death march heading into the jump. All connection with the music is gone because they're either trying to pack in the difficulty (Mao's threeturn into the triple axel, or Irina's multiple three turns into the loop), and they even lose the expression of the music in their face!

I'm all for a return to double jumps, but a return to expression of the music. No wonder why they got rid of the artistic mark in figure skating--there is no such thing as artistry any longer.

Old School

Discoduck,

Thanks for your post re: Tai and Randy. What a wonderful pair they were. Just watching that performance made me remember why pair skating used to be my favorite venue. Not so much anymore as I don't believe the quality is there for most pairs skating today with the exception of a few of the Chinese couples.

Tai and Randy were always in unison and skated closer together than most of the pairs do today. Beautiful.

i just wanted to mention that I enjoyed this lp more than any worlds or euro or olympic lp I've seen in a looooooong time.
Great skating rather than one grimly telegraphed jump into the next....

I still cringe thinking about when Tai and Randy had to withdraw from the Olmpics....thanks for the link to this program, great to watch again!

That broke my heart. I think that was the first time I ever cried at anything related to skating. :(

All I have to add to this thread is I'd love to see any of today's skaters attempt Don Jackson's 2-lutz variation (I think that's the right jump) with both arms crossed over each other.

Brian Orser's delayed single axel is another gorgeous variation on a simpler jump I really love.

You rarely ever see anyone do a variation on a jump these days. Every once in a while you'll see a 'tano-something, but I can't think of any other variation I've seen lately.

And you never see anyone do a delayed jump either.

I’m glad to see posters are enjoying these old school programs. Thanks to those who have added links.

discoduck~I assume you’re discoducky at youtube? I’ve added your clip of Tai & Randy at the ’76 Olympics…I really enjoyed that one as well. And Tai & Randy in ’80 were my first skating heartbreak, also.

dutchherder~I agree *old school* = the Protopopovs!

Yes that is me. I loved Tai and Randy. My 12 year old heart was broken when they pulled out in 1980.

And the Protopopovs rock! I will agree with you on that.

it was right around that time... if anyone has a copy of Scott Hamilton's autobiography handy (mine's not with me! shocking! LOL) he mentioned it in his book... and his book has an index so it'd be pretty easy to look it up!

I just happen to reading his book this week, lol! Scott says the LP was changed from five minutes to four minutes & thirty-six seconds for the 1982 season.

Carol and Tenley

What lovely and mature skating, and so musical (without the pressure of triple jumps). Are the old moves they did worth anything--muzurka, walley, split jumps (Tenley does 3 in a row), cabriole (going backward, skating foot comes up tap extended leg), scratch spin. Did you catch Carol's 4 axels in a row, switching directions. I love, admire, and cherish our modern skaters and am in awe of their athletic ability, but we must all agree that something precious has been lost.

Oh Lord that's unbelievable :swoon:

LegalGirl82,   for the link!

 Glad you enjoyed it, alyona!

Penny~I did catch the axels, and I really loved that. Agree with your last sentence completely.
