Looks like it's between B&A and D&S, and whichever of them wins the free dance, wins the gold.

belbin/agosto

I don't know what improvements Tanith and Ben have made in the OD, but its definitely good news to be above oksana and maxim for that phase...they were 3rd in the od at SA, but led here...i cant wait to youtube it, lol....

It's 1: 20 am where I am, and I have been wondering how Tanith and Ben did in their Original Dance. Thanks for posting the results. Happy to see they are doing well at Cup of China.:)

Interesting results.

C/L had the highest TES!

B/A improved on their OD score from last week, but it's still below Delobel/Schoenfelder's OD score from SA which included a botched twizzle sequence which they lost at least 2 points on. The choreography mark, which was the highest PCS mark for Del/Schos OD at SA, was one of the weaker marks here for B/A. They also lost the PCS to Dom/Shab. Maybe the judges sending a message to Linichuk about the choreography?.

K/N lost the OD to C/L becuase of TES, but they still can't pull quite the same PCS as D/S and B/A. There goes my feeling that they would pull the upset here.

Zaretskis also lost to Z/B and W/P on both the TES and PCS, as well as two of the Chines teams on TES. Ouch.

By the look of the TES scores it looks like either there were a lot of missteps or teams just not getting the levels.

Cappellini/Lanotte receveid the highest technical mark of the competition and were third over Khoklova Novitski in the original dance score! I'm so happy for them!
Even if the GP assignment was very unfortunate for them they are doing a great job by defending this 4th place.

 I love Tanith's dress hehe...I think they improve, the progrma looks better now, and the new costumes relly add something to the program...it is rely better then at SA

**Go Tanith and Ben**

Thanks, everyone, for your comments. Please, more feedback from anyone who has seen vids! Dance is so exciting this year!

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

It seems to me that the top 4 teams have a shot for gold and, unfortunately, one of them will be medaless when it is over.

I'm glad to Zadorozniuk/Verbillo doing well. This is a team for the future.

I don't think so, Joe. I'd say gold will go to DomShabs or B/A. The other two teams are too far back to overtake them:

95.58 DomShabs
95.23 B/A
90.80 Khokhski
87.74 Capnotte

Both DomShabs and B/A would have to have several huge mistakes for K/N to overtake them in the FD. I just don't see that happening. The Italians have no chance for gold, and could win bronze only if they have an extraordinary FD and K/N have a meltdown in the FD. Even then, the judges are always going to give the PCS edge to the World bronze medalists.

I'm glad to Zadorozniuk/Verbillo doing well. This is a team for the future.

Z/V moved up because W/P had a couple of glitches in their OD, and the Zaretskis don't seem to be focused on their skating (they are in the midst of a discrimination lawsuit against their home rink). I'd have to see the Ukrainians do a kickass FD before I'd believe they are on the upgrade.

How things have changed under the new system, B&A won the OD but are still behind.

At least now, whoever wins the Free of the top 2 will win the whole competition.

Tanith looks so much better in this outfit. I love the cap:yes:

I liked D/S music. Not sure if it fits the OD theme this year, but their costumes sure look the part.

I agree with you, and I don't like Oksana dress, I hate orange and black together it is to much helloween

What happened to my beloved Zaretskis? The pride of Israel. Why are they in 7th? They deserve a medal not this politking

Actually, I liked her dress. I loved her cap too. It reminded me of the ladies in the 1940s comedies which I love to watch. Is it orange? It looked pink to me on youtube.

I don't really know where to start. I had a difficult experience watching the ODs- technically (sound cut out for parts of each) but also just visually (the costumes were distracting for every couple except maybe the Italians).

Impressions for top 4:

Cappellini/LaNotte: I will say thematically this is one of the top ODs this season. Bei mir bist du schoen is a good vehicle for them. High energy, sassy, and really captures the spirit of 1940s swing. They're getting better in the execution of their steps but they didn't have the confidence and strength that I saw in an early season performance off of youtube for an Italian national event. And again I don't know if was my technical difficulties but it looked like they finished behind the music. Good job- it looks like the judges this season are rewarding teams in the OD if they do a real bang up job, such as Kerrs at SA and really placing them above established teams if they do a better job. :agree:

Khokhlova/Novitski: While I thought their CD costumes were funny but I accepted it in the spirit of their individuality, I thought the OD costumes were just stupid and hid-g-eous!! I mean really!! And the program itself was one of those weird Russian pastiches of western styles where it's apparent they don't really understand what the era and style of music was about so they mix two disparate pieces of music and try to make a program out of it. You used to see this happen more in the 80s. But underneath you can see their strong skating ability- deep secure edges- even though she had a problem with a twizzle. This program is a waste of their talent. Plus the first blues piece sounded more 1950s then 20s-40s. Bleh!! Very disappointed.

Belbin/Agosto: Ok, they changed their costuming but they should know better. The costume change didn't help in my opinion. Tanith's outfit is pretty but it's like a 1950s American in Paris type of outfit- with red wool beret and summery white with red trim halter dress. Completely wrong fit in terms of style and era. Plus the music isn't period at all- it's tap music from a broadway cabaret type show- not period 20s-40s dance. Bahh- this costuming and music choice so distracting to me that I can't even concentrate on their really good technical skating!!

Domnina/Shabalin: By this time, I'm really cranky. And this program does nothing to lighten my mood. First off, you can see since their move to the States this couple has really changed their costuming choices drastically. They've gone completely realistic and off the street clothes sort of style- in high contrast to their previous costuming style. Oksana in a salmon colored 1930s dress with fur scarf and little pillbox hat with tiny veil and Maxim in an ensemble from Gap- gray blazer, striped wool scarf, and newsboy cap. The costuming would be great for a period film or photo shoot but for skating the hats and scarves obscured their beautiful body line.

Also, don't get me started on the musical choice. I read one post somewhere that stated it's a truly original dance with a waltz music but skated in the style of the period so therefore it justifies no deduction. I think that's truly wrong- the only thing about this program that's period are the outfits. If the theme of the OD were waltz then this one would be a somewhat original take on that theme but otherwise it's just a cop out and horrible miscue and the judges should be taken out and shot for letting this pass. It's even worse in terms of thematic fit then B/A's tap OD. Linichuk needs to get a crash course in music and dance history from the prescribed era. The only skating element that stood out for me was an interesting see-saw motion lift with Oksana in a split and Maxim in a spiral position- that was kind of unique but not enough to make me forgive the whole program.

OK- I'm calm now. I will say this after having seen most of the ODs from the top couples now I will say that the ones that really work this season (in no particular order) belong to the Kerrs, Davis/White, Cappellini/LaNotte, Samuelson/Bates, and all of the ODs by the top French couples (D/S, P/B, and even C/J). I'm also really interested to see Faiella/Scali's OD because I saw an early version of it on youtube and it looks fun.

The Zaretskis and their coach Galit Chait are suing the rink where they have been training, for discrimination based on nationality. Being involved in such a dispute is going to affect the time spent in training, but also the concentration on training.

I don't see that this is 'politicking' in the sense that the Zars are being punished by the judges. I think the Zars' minds and spirits are not wholly into their skating right now, and it shows.

B/A's OD is based on 1930s Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire movies. Their outfits are fine for that period, as is the tap dance.

DomShabs' music was a Shostakovich jazz piece written in the 1930s. Keep in mind that what was popular in music and dance in the US in the '20s, '30s and '40s was not necessarily the same as what was popular in Europe, and neither was anything like what was allowed in Soviet Russia during those decades.

Ummm- I hate to break it to you but B/A's music is from the movie "Steppin' Out" which is a 1991 movie about Liza Minnelli teaching a tap dancing class. You're thinking about the "Stepping Out" by Irving Berlin which was used in a Fred/Ginger movie- which they are not using!!

Also, referring to the choice of Shostakovich- while it may have been written in the 1930s and in a jazz style or even performed with jazz instruments. The OD explicitly asks for dances originating in style from the 20s-40s and the waltz did not originate at that time. I think this has been debated already elsewhere.

:p :)
