Original Dance

About B/A: does not matter when the music used for the dance originated, but the type of dance itself -- and tap dancing became HUGE during the 1930s. The basic idea of the OD is Astaire and Rogers, and they were the dancing icons of that era.

And the idea of the OD is the STYLE of dance that was popular in the era of the 20s to 40s, not that the style had to originate during that era.

Do you actually KNOW what style of dance was popular in Russia from 1920-1945?

Actually IINM the guidelines for this year require a rhythm that did in fact originate in the 20's, 30's or 40's. Whether or not waltzes were popular in the era is irrelevant. You could do a tango on that basis (in fact I think the tango was specifically prohibitied despire being hugely popular in the time under consideration, if they actually thought some team would try to slip a waltz into the mix I'm sure they would have prohibited it by name too).

If you're going to get into the historial aspects, maybe we should ask Doris to weigh in since she's the resident dance/music history maven.

But according to the rule book....

Any one or two rhythms/dances originated in the 1920’s or 1930’s or 1940’s may be chosen (except Tango). If two rhythms are
used one of them may be repeated (each rhythm may be from the different decades mentioned above). The program should reflect
the original flavor and style of the decades mentioned above and NOT performed as a Ballroom Dance.
For general information concerning the rhythms (dances) which belong to the above mentioned decades please refer to the “Ice
Dance Music Rhythms Booklet and Compact Disc 1995”.

We're missing that mysterious Dance Music Rhythms Booklet to give us some definitive answers but....

Tap dance has a long history with many growth spurts of popularity and while it was immensenly popular in the 1930s to say that tap originated from the 1930s is false- at least not in the way that the Charleston originated in the 1920s and Swing originated in the 1940s.

Everyone has differences in the way that they take in a performance so while we could argue endlessly about when tap actually became the most popular I feel that Tanith/Ben while amazing skaters do not perform a 1930s style tap. The dance I saw previously of Faiella/Scali has more of a 1930s Fred/Ginger style feel to it with tap elements as does Samuelson/Bates.

Also, while the Shostakovich piece was played widely in Russia in the 1930s it doesn't make it necessarily a prescribed rhythm that is appropriate for this OD as it was intended. There were many latin rhythms that were immensely popular dances in that period but I don't think most would consider that an appropriate choice for this year's OD.

Mambo was hugely popular in the 1940's, but I doubt that it fits this year's description, since it is generally a Latin medley dance.

Granted the waltz gets stuck into different description. There was a Spanish waltz in the Spanish medley description and a country waltz in the folk dance description, but myself, I think the place the waltz belongs is in the Grand Ballroom description.

As to popular music in Russia in the 1920's, 30's and 40's, I am no expert.

^ou mean it wasn't like this :biggrinbo:

The issue is whether anyone danced to Shostakovich in a social setting of any kind?

Here's a link to a book on Russian popular culture. Given that the foxtrot was renamed the quickstep as part of a post war Stalinist purge of western culture, and that jazz band leaders were arrested, it is safe to say that in the first half of the 1940's that Russians danced to jazz as well as the foxtrot.

D&S could have done either without compromising their Russian patriotism and identity.

Or they could have danced to theremin music (the first electronic instrument, invented and played by a Russian)

They waltz because they do it well, and they will find an excuse to waltz in any OD.

However, I thought the whole thing looked like a send up of the Grumpy Old Men movies.

It's a shock to me, but somehow to me Maxim looks like Walter Matthau and something about his skates resemble galoshes in this OD. Oksana makes a very pretty Ann Margret.

Maxim as Walter Matthau? :chorus: This I gotta see! Doubt it's the look they were going for! :p

Domnina/Shabalin: By this time, I'm really cranky. And this program does nothing to lighten my mood. First off, you can see since their move to the States this couple has really changed their costuming choices drastically. They've gone completely realistic and off the street clothes sort of style- in high contrast to their previous costuming style. Oksana in a salmon colored 1930s dress with fur scarf and little pillbox hat with tiny veil and Maxim in an ensemble from Gap- gray blazer, striped wool scarf, and newsboy cap. The costuming would be great for a period film or photo shoot but for skating the hats and scarves obscured their beautiful body line.

Also, don't get me started on the musical choice. I read one post somewhere that stated it's a truly original dance with a waltz music but skated in the style of the period so therefore it justifies no deduction. I think that's truly wrong- the only thing about this program that's period are the outfits. If the theme of the OD were waltz then this one would be a somewhat original take on that theme but otherwise it's just a cop out and horrible miscue and the judges should be taken out and shot for letting this pass. It's even worse in terms of thematic fit then B/A's tap OD. Linichuk needs to get a crash course in music and dance history from the prescribed era. The only skating element that stood out for me was an interesting see-saw motion lift with Oksana in a split and Maxim in a spiral position- that was kind of unique but not enough to make me forgive the whole program.

exactly! it clearly doesn't express the "Style" of the time period of the selected OD.
i guess the use of the saxophone as a soloist and etc makes it jazzy enough but i can still picture them in fluffy white ball gown with penguin tux with tails.
about their lift - cool but...looks tentative. they look reserved overall.

This is interesting. it is anybody's game in the freedance. I have yet to see the Domina and Shabalin's freedance, but it will probably be pretty good. Gotta love Spartacus.

Domina and Shabalin must be kidding. "Jazz Waltz"?????
That is a famous old german waltz, the name escapes me at the moment. Nothing jazz about it. At all. Only difference is that they are wearing weird charlie chaplin clothes and not a ballgown and tux. They finished way after the music and she almost fell around 2:25. are the judges BLIND?
and i though Belibin and Agosto did not get the theme...

I can verify that there are a whole set of NTV vids with wacked out sound for the OD. Some have whole sections of no sound. I just managed to find some with decent sound. It's amazing how much more tap like B&A's midline sequence looks with the sound synchronized with the film.

For those wondering, this 1940's pattern from Madamoiselle appears to be what Tanith was aiming at for her hat. Apparently, in the 40's one might make one's own beret.

She's aiming for the 40's "sun dress" for the rest of it.

I don't think they did. I'm pretty sure the sound in the video was just out of sync. I've noticed that with several of the CoC vids on youtube.
to many people make decision based on one you tube video.videos are not very good vehicles to judge timing ( internet videos)
