Ok here are my random thoughts about the evening:
1) Adeline CANAC & Maximin COIA: I hate to be mean, but wow that was the longest Cotton Club Ive ever seen. I kept thinking of Totmianina & Marinin's version from 2002(which I loved) and I had to keep the remote away from my boyfriend who wanted to fast forward thru them cause, "this is torture"
he can give such drama when he wants
sometimes I wonder why I even make him watch skating with me, I think partly cause I like to torture him.
2) Yue ZHANG & Lei WANG: They have such potential, but it really fell apart after he couldnt do the lift with her(either time) he needs to build up those muscles like Hongbo Zhao did using huge weights in the gym, like he showed us in a fluff piece years ago.
3) Caitlin YANKOWSKAS & John COUGHLIN: Good for them
they did well and made it thru the program, although he started to do the SP choreography
I loved their reaction at the end. I think they were more excited than anyone that they got thru it with no problems. Too cute.
4) Rena INOUE & John BALDWIN: I know its last years music(which my boyfriend noticed right off the bat) but I still love the music choice. Their costumes are much better than the SP costumes. Thier SBS spins are great as always, but the rest was blah. I cant believe he actually made the jump and Rena messed up. I am hoping they retire soon cause Im I must have ulcers from stress from watching them compete, before he used to swing her upside down with her head skimming the ice and now the throw triple axle. I dont know how much more I or Rena for that matter can take Im kinda shocked they got above Yankowskas & Coughlin, I think John Baldwin was too.
5) Meagan DUHAMEL & Craig BUNTIN: It was a nice program although like the short program there were small mistakes throughout it. Nothing spectacular but enjoyable none the less.
6) Keauna McLAUGHLIN & Rockne BRUBAKER:
Woo-Hoo!! Way to go!! I really enjoyed the program except for the straightline footwork which seemed alittle slow. But wonderful program overall. They are really working their way up. Fav program of the night
I also loved seeing the coaches crying at the end. Too cute 
7) Aliona SAVCHENKO & Robin SZOLKOWY: I love them but Robin seemed really off tonight..and last night as well. I hope he is feeling ok. Maybe just a few off nights. Their costumes are great and the program could be amazing but there were a few off moments and I couldnt believe they singled that 3S again. Ugh Oh well. I am happy they won gold:yes:
8) Maria MUKHORTOVA & Maxim TRANKOV: 1st off I have to say...fire the costumer for both the SP & LP. Eesh those costumes were a mess as was the program. Even without the many mistakes they had, I still dont think I would have like it at all. It was disjointed and too much posing etc. I get the storyline but am not impressed. Sad for them that they fell apart under the pressure though

S&S's program will be a masterpiece if they can skate it clean. They need more speed at the end when the music changes to Adagio, but it is the 1st event, so I will cut them some slack.
I am so happy for McLaughlin and Brubaker. Great program, HUGE throws and twist and they were so happy with the way they skated. Just makes you smile.

You know...I was excited to begin w/to be seeing McLaughlin and Brubaker in Ottawa next weekend, but after seeing their LP on CBC this afternoon, I really can't wait to see them out there next weekend. Oh wow what a debut on the Senior Circuit!!
So happy for Megan and Craig!! When you consider what they've been through this off season w/Craig's shoulder surgery, rehab and the lost training time, that was much better than I expected to see from them. Very respectable indeed.

The Russians...Not only was that a mess, but the music had me having flashbacks to Brian Orser's 88 LP. Even after all this time, I just have to hear that music and I "see" Brian's program to that music. They really need to go back to the drawing board because this thing just doesn't work for them.

I thought Maxim's costumes were alright, I really liked his SP one. As for Maria's, I don't think the costume works for the program. The Hooligan i get, not the lady. Her SP costume looks really lovely close up. Unfortunately, from a distance when she's skating, it makes her look naked.
I really think the music for the LP is really difficult to skate to(Then again, I've never been a Shostakovich fan). I can't really say whether I liked it or not, since they skated pretty poorly tonight. The LP, unfortunately, seems to be where they fall apart. It was the same for Europeans and Worlds last season. Beautiful SPs, but unfortunately, their LPs just don't match up. All the best for their next competition though. They do have loads of potential, and I love their skating style!

On Russian TV, Tarasova was making a point that M&T's behavior during LP was actually an improvement. She felt that whereas before they'd just give up completely once mistakes started accumulating, this time they did not "give up" but finished the program as best they could. TT felt that his showed a maturity that would help them persevere in the long run. Now, it is also entirely possible that, of course, that she was just saying that to give them a bit of a self confidence boost when they watched her commentary later on.

I REALLY hope Maria and Maxim do not get too discouraged by what happened in their LP. They are so talented and I really feel they were just not prepared at that moment in the season to be considered favorites over the World champs. I hope they chalk this up as a learning experience, so that they can better handle the pressure next time. They have to remember that the season is still early and that they still have time to improve. I wish them the very best of luck! :thumbsup:

I agree. They were terrific. Both of their programs were great. If they keep improving...I really see them on the podium at Worlds....(well not this year but maybe in a few years!!)
I don't see Brian Orser, but that program sure was a mess. Hated it. The feathers on the costume were really distracting after a while. Tons of technical mistakes obviously, but beyond that, it was tooth-decay inducingly precious in such an over-the-top way it was painful. Cutesy really does have an age limit.
See, I knew there was supposed to be some kind of narrative going on, but from the choreography and presentation alone it was entirely indistinguishable. I really wanted to like M/T a lot more than I did.
The Germans, on the other hand, I quite liked. I hate their new SP, but really like their long, though it still had quite a few rough edges. I thought this program really stood out from the competition in terms of maturity. Which brings me to M/B. They were good for a new young team, but man is that LP generic. It could practically define the word. For the sake of continued development they need something that's not so paint-by-numbers. Speaking of, I thought D/B looked pretty good, but that old warhorse of a piece of music...it seemed to kinda overwhelm them.
In general I had the same complaint that I've had for the last several years about pairs skating — very little in the way of memorable programs that stand out from the same-old, same-old pack.
