Papadakis publishes book; Cizeron challenges claims

Maybe a small point, maybe not...

My understanding from other articles is that Guillaume has not filed a suit, but sent what in US law would be a cease and desist letter. Which the publishers can respond to, or not.

Not a small point at all. It costs little to send a cease and desist letter; starting a lawsuit is a much more serious, expensive and laborious process. Also, the claims in a lawsuit are supposed to be verified (signed under penalty of perjury) - at least in the US. There is no verification and no risk of committing perjury involved in simply sending a letter. Many a cease and desist letter has been sent with no follow up. I have no idea what will follow here, but there is a big difference between sending a letter and starting a lawsuit.

And what in the world do Madi and Evan have to do with this and why are we talking about them? Gabi is French. The publisher is French. Everyone in this story is French.
Some people will take any excuse however thin to bash skaters they don't like and Madi and Evan get the rough end of this stick way too often.

As for Papadakis and Cizeron, as I have said before we have got to stop somehow expecting elite sports people to all be decent people. It appears neither is particularly admirable (he always sounded like a right piece of work), and being surprised - just as some were when Aymoz's less admirable side peeked out, or those of quite a number of US skaters or Japanese or whoever, wherever - when we find out physical prowess does not equal 'niceness' is silly.

Papadakis posted today, that her book is bestseller, lol , she forgot to mention that it is bestseller of sport books, not all of books sold, but whatever...anyway, she has money now
lol? A bestselling sports book is often far more lucrative than the fiction that gets the word proudly blazoned all over their covers. Yes, cooking and romance are bigger genres, but most others' bestsellers means way less sold.

thats not the point if it is fiction or not.
Only that her book is not a bestseller overall.
Not one bestseller claim in the entire world of publishing splits hairs like you want to, nor do the authors, nor do the trade publications, nor do the publishers, nor do New York Times - whose lists are always by type and often genre - and its ilk. If they did then no one in the entire world of publishing except a couple of celebrity chefs and Agatha Christie (and maybe J K Rowling. Maybe) could currently use the word.

Stop nitpicking for petty points.

you made drama out of it. I am not arguing with you because you dont know what I mean

Since this is now being covered in major outlets internationally... in response to Gabriella Papadakis's forthcoming memoir "So As Not To Disappear", which has been quoted in L'Equipe and evidently portrays him as a cold, controlling partner who told Gabriella he would stop skating with her if she reported being raped by a coach in Lyon, Guillaume Cizeron has gone to the press to "denounce the content of the book, which contains false information, attributing to me, among other things, statements I have never made and which I consider serious.”

For what it's worth, I believe Gabriella, and it sounds like a hell of a lot more was going on in her life that will be covered in the book than just Cizeron. By responding in this way it seems to me he's only increasing interest in her book.

As. a commentator on U.S. TV, Papadakis does tend to have high praise for Chock and Bates. I guess that's her job and what her new employers expect. I haven't heard her say much about the Fournier-Beaudry/Cizeron partnership -- maybe we'll get an earful if Gabby does the Olympics for NBC.
She said that Bock won GP because FB/C made mistakes and that they will be formidable rivals for OGM if they are clean - and this is fair statement. She praises Bock because US broadscaster hires her.

You know what I wish? I wish we would say Chock and Bates instead of "Bock." Oh, well.

On the question of what is a best seller, if a person writes a sports book and a lot of people are interested enough in that sport to buy it, well, it seems kind of silly to complain that it didn't sell as many copies as Harry Potter or Game of Thrones -- or that it has not been reprinted as many times over the centuries as Euclid's "Elements."

As for 'cease and desist orders," my understanding is that such an "order" is a binding court document handed out by a judge in a court of law. with penalties attached for non-compliance, while a "cease and desist letter" is merely an attempt to bully, threaten or harass someone, carrying no legal force. Is that right? (I am not a lawyer, I suppose that laws are different in different countries.)

OK, so I Googled "#1 bestselling figure skating autobiography." Google AI thinks it might be Michelle Kwan's Heart of a Champion (for young audience). In "modern times," Aoi Hano (duh!) :)
In four volumes and counting. Made a lot of money for the Ice Rink Sendai.

The definition of 'bestseller' by Merriam-Webster is a popular product and especially a book whose sales are among the highest of its class. By OED, a product, usually a book, which is bought by large numbers of people. By Collins Dictionary, a book, record, CD, or other product that has sold in great numbers, especially over a short period.

Given the prospect of salacious scandal, I wouldn't be surprised if it does sell well enough: Gracie's book did, so did all those about Tonya Harding.

The "Chock and Bates are bad skaters" narrative has got to end. Yes there are politics, reputation, and power games involved. There are better skaters out there - Cizeron for one. But these people are not BAD skaters. I'd like to see your average Twitter warrior (the place where I most often see their skating skills ridiculed) go out and try skating. Not turning, not jumping, not spinning, just skating. Try holding an edge and then report back.
Thank you!! 100%👏

Do I hate that she's losing opportunities? Absolutely. Do I see any other ethical decision for NBC? No.

I still wish Jean-Luc were the commentator. When he does the practices, I learn more in five minutes than I do in a two-hour telecast.
I just wish the publication of her book was happening after the Olympics. Regarding bias/positive or negative, Tanith was commentating while she was coaching and no one seemed to have an issue with potential bias. I don't remember anything negative.

Why?
Judges will do their job, thats all. Americans are NOT able to wipe the ice with the french, they need help from the judges.

It's amazing how people want the Americans to win so that only Cizeron doesn't win.
My take is that the French team event when Papadakis was skating was not as innovative as Chock & Bates who throughout the years always presented original themes in their free whereas the French seemed to be one note - lyrical. And yes I know France grants citizenship to "talent" so that one does not have to wait as long as USA or other countries to gain citizenship but it bugs the hell out of me that Laurence,a Canadian, got French citizenship within months of her partnership with Cizeron.
