Papadakis publishes book; Cizeron challenges claims

They could still ask her (Tanith) though. But then again, skaters she coaches are reserves for the Olympics and there could be an issue if a team does withdraw.

But Agosto would be a good choice.
In replacing her, I like Ben, but I'm pretty sure he's busy with his ice dance school out in CO. I think Jean-Luc would be a good choice.
Jean-Luc has a close personal relationship with one of the contestants. It's hard (impossible?) to find a commentator who doesn't have ties to some of the participating skaters. But seeming bias towards some skaters is better than a strong bias against.

WRT Gabby, I think her comments about Cizeron may have disqualified her even if he hadn't denied them/stuck back.

I agree with everyone who said that NBC had no choice, although it just seems a tad off that they would make this decision with this commentator.

I like Ben Agosto and Jean-Luc, but I would love to hear Mark Hanretty on NBC. The antidote to Terry and Johnny. :)

Ben Agosto, Jean-Luc Baker, Mark Hanratty ALL are far more accomplished commentators than Papadakis. I was surprised when she got the gig in the first place and feel it was based on her Olympic Gold Medal. She was not very good IMO. And quite frankly, I would prefer a postal worker or Amazon driver to Tara and Johnny. They get more insufferable with every competition. Tara NEVER shuts up!

There was a comment on the other thread about Gabby not being able to listen to Cizerone's voice and having to cover her ears from it in recent French radio interviews because she found it too traumatising. It would not be possible for her to avoid exposure to him at the Olympics. NBC have given conflict of interest and the book as the reason, and they may not know about the difficulties she had in the French radio interviews. However, I think it is probably good that NBC have removed Gabby for two reasons. Firstly, I am concerned that her presence would cause a lot of distraction and take attention away from the skating itself. Secondly, if hearing Cizerone's voice is so triggering for Gabby, I have concerns about whether NBC would be able to adequately protect her wellbeing at the Olympics. She would need to be able to interview skaters in medal positions, and that is highly likely to include him. It appears that Gabby probably has a lot of suppressed trauma (which is understandable, and I am not intending it to be a criticism of Gabby). Exposing her to one of the people she feels has emotionally abused her, and doing so in front of the world on live TV, is probably not the best way of helping her deal with the trauma she has experienced.

I think someone said the Jean-Luc was going to be doing the Eurosport commentary, as Gabby had been given the NBC contract? If so, it might be tricky for him to get out of the Eurosport contract to switch to NBC, and doing so could affect future contracts.

Reading through the US nationals threads, there were quite a few posts about Gabby talking too much. Just because someone was a top skater, does not automatically mean that they will be a good commentator.

Tiffany Zahorski is doing commentary for Eurosport, possibly for France. It would be so incredibly good if Jean-Luc did their English language commentary. He is an asset any network should fight for!

I was watching US Nationals and must say I did not find Gabby's commentary as good as that by some other commentators. Kudos to her for doing it in a foreign language, but it was not top notch. It's a tough time and I hope she comes out of this entire situation stronger and with opportunities that work for her in the long run.

This is a very good point that I wish those getting outraged on the internet would consider. I find the fact that she wanted to push ahead with it despite those issues slightly worrying. And realistically it sounds like she's not capable of doing the job properly right now.

NBC quietly did this stating when asked that it was done due to her dispute with Cizeron, as well as her new book.

Thoughts?

I think it’s a crummy thing to do.

OMG. 👀 Just in time for the Olympics. I figured there would be something scandalous that broke out during or in the lead-up to the Olympics. There usually is. Side-eyeing timing of this book's release.

I'm also concerned about the feeling I have of certain powers-that-be in the sport pulling hard for Chock/ Bates to win Olympic gold [e.g., having Papadakis in the booth effusively praising C/B, who are direct rivals to her former partner, Cizeron, now partnered with Fournier-Beaudry]. C/B are not better than everybody else in the ice dance field. Winning medals at the Olympics should be about the athletes' performances and abilities, not about who is heavily favored and backed; not about the airing of past bitter personal conflicts. What a sad state of affairs.

Plus, if Gabby has such serious, biased feelings about her former partner, I do not think she should be in the NBC/ USA commentating booth covering his and his competitors' performances. It's a conflict of interest. IMO, Gabby is not a good ice dance commentator anyway. Jean-Luc Baker, Mark Hanretty, and even Ben Agosto, are far better, as were Tanith Belbin and Charlie White years ago.

Sorry if this has been discussed before...

But what's the best way to read Gabby's book as an American who doesn't speak French? I only see it as a Kindle version on Amazon, but I've never used Kindle myself. If I download the Kindle app, is there a built in translation feature? As far as I know, there's no plan to release the book in English.

It is such a hard thing. Generally any commentator will have some bias or perceived bias because if they are talking figure skating they usually have some relation to skating. I don't think it is verynice or proper to complain about Gabby because of her accent or perhaps language challenges, translation issues but understnading her for whatever reason can be more difficult. Perceived bias is something that one has to be respectful of. The other potential candidates have not made such polarizing comments.

Someone mentioned that an English version is in the works.
I would keep away from any automated translation.

This is not meant to be catty but it seems clear though hard to figure out all the tragedies this woman has gone through. I hope this book helps her to find her voice and heal Regardless of the truth it is apparent Gabby is convinced she is he vicitm That is her right. I hope this book like what Gracie Gold claimd will help bring her peace. It sounds like a lot of people have created in her mind trauma. As a victim of various crimes I can appreciate it is hard to present that and deal with it. You can tell from her voice she has been hurt.
