Manny, That's it - the dark pillar in the center of a sun dog at high altitude being the finest atmospheric example of Mie Scattering off finely divided mists.
Named after the Brocken, because the conditions are often right there for viewing.
This little illusion caused many to think they were seeing the supernatural.
