Polina Edmunds | Page 8 | Golden Skate

Polina Edmunds

Oh dear Lord WHY? There is nothing REMOTELY in her skating personality that indicates she could be a creditable Scarlet O'Hara. NOTHING. I hope I am proved wrong, but this is one of the WORST mismatches between a skater and her music that I can remember. And I am a HUGE fan of her skating. Good Lord, WHY??????

I don´t know if she can be a good Scarlett but I love the music.

It's composed by Max Steiner, one of the absolute best of the Hollywood Golden Age composers. I can see Polina skating to another of his beautiful scores--Now, Voyager--but GWTW? Maybe Polina in day to day life has some of Scarlet O'Hara's attributes, but that is not how she comes across to me on the ice at all.

(YMMV of course)

A Secret, Hidden Beauty

It was thoughtful and generous of dorispulaski to share this souvenir from Polina’s early career:

Thank you.

What I find fascinating about it is that so many elements of her repertoire were already in place almost five years ago. The formal balletic positions of her arms, the little running steps, and that curious backward leap, almost plaintive in its effect: all were there, as though the flower of her talent was in bloom even then.

It is like a photograph, which captures not only the moment but resonates with moments to come.

What of that “Russian” aspect, though, which others have remarked upon? Is it no more than the precision of her technique or a certain austerity in presentation, or is there something more? Tolstoy and Dostoevsky wrote of a “Russian spirit” that was deep and compassionate, but which found in suffering the revelation of a secret, hidden beauty. Does this young half-American, half-Russian woman possess such a capacity as well?

Here is another photograph:

She is oh, so grave in her beauty. The posture and extension are superb, but her face is transparent in its expression, as though to reveal a heart perhaps unacquainted with hardship or suffering, no more than her own life has been, but with an innate ability to understand and appreciate it.

Perhaps it is something in the blood, something that has been taught.

Her long program this season will be to Max Steiner’s music from “Gone With the Wind,” as she tries to convey an impression of Scarlett O’Hara, one of the most complex heroines in popular literature. Her Scarlett must go from a frivolous girl to a woman wed to rich earth of Tara, whose indomitable spirit has been forged through hardship and heartbreak.

Nothing she has done before has reached this level or depth, though her Romeo and Juliet and Grieg programs were suffused by an almost melancholic yearning. If her Fairy Dance program of last season was more joyful, however, it also required from her a more nuanced technique. It was preparation, then, for what is to come.

A figure skater’s technique is merely an instrument to be used, but the music played on it must come from the heart, if it is to be felt by other hearts. There is something here which suggests, to me at least, an artistry in the process of fulfillment. There will be music, gay and tumultuous and finally grand and glorious, but it will become Polina’s own.

She chooses Gone With the wind and yet does not choose a green costume?

Tempting to shout 'sacrilege' but I'll just be saying that this might be a lost opportunity. People might have thought Pink was unacceptable for Tinkerbell program but in actuality I think pink in her new LP is a bigger travesty. I thought pink suited the tinkerbell music.

I think her definitive costumes are not ready. Sometimes skaters wear old or cheap costumes for summer competitions. Anyway she and her team are not the most fashion people, so I keep my expectations low.

I've noticed Polina posting on Maria Sotskova's Instagram account lately and she has again posted a congratulations to Masha for making the finals!

Way to go Polina for showing international sportsmanship for everyone to see. What a nice example for people to follow. :points:

As you Polina fans know, GS Forum Staff took over ownership of his fan fest because the owner of the OP was banned.

We have recently obtained an app that lets us reassign ownship of OPs without having to make everyone update their bookmarks!

Would any of you fans like to own Polina's OP?

If so, PM me

A reminder to all - as one moment can touch us forever: "Trade your expectation for appreciation and the world changes instantly."

Words of wisdom that Polina shared via Instagram recently. I really like this perspective and think it will serve her well to see the world thru those eyes. Good Luck this season Polina!!!

She's 5' 6" or so isn't she? Tall as far as lady competitive skaters go.. Can't wait to see her first skate this season... All the best!

Thanks humbaba! So at 5'7" she would be close to 6 feet on skates?! My word!! She's a lovely skater and one of my top 10 favorites... Remembering her videos from last season she has a great sense of humor too!

I must confess...before seeing Polina's FS...I didn't know that this music was from Gone With The Wind (having never seen the film)...but I did immediately recognize it as that-song-they-always-play-when-they-show-the-dead-people-tribute-at-the-Oscars and now Polina's program is very gloomy for me...:slink:

But those guys are GIANTS!!!!!?????
She's becoming quite the celebrity.... Hockey Pucks & Baseballs! Love it! Football next?

^

I keep finding pictures were she looks absolutely tiny relative to everyone else :confused2:

That's a hilarious shot, Sam! Polina looks like she's saying, "I run really fast as soon as I drop the puck."

On the right is Sidney ("Sid the Kid") Crosby, Captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins, No. 87, listed at a mere 5'-11" and 200 lbs. On the left is "Jumbo Joe" Thornton, Captain of the San Jose Sharks, No. 19, listed at 6'-4" and 220 lbs (and the Sharks are rumored to lowball his listed weight). With all of their hockey gear on, they are a lot bigger than these numbers!

Wikipedia lists San Jose as Polina's home town and training location, so I would guess that she's a long-time Sharks fan.

And now, back to figure skating . . .
