Who do you believe would be a better President for our country?

I have voted in 10 U.S. presidential elections. This is the first time that I have been truly concerned about what the outcome will mean in terms of the immediate and long-term future of this country and the world.

Here are some of the questions that I am wrestling with.

1. How is it possible that after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, a nation that had the sympathy and support of most of the world now is looked upon as a "bully?"

2. How can it be that a country that in 2001 had the financial means to eliminate the national debt and adequately fund social security is now running $500-billion-a-year deficits?

3. How is it that we are fighting two wars, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq, and also fighting a "war on terrorism" at home by expanding "homeland security," yet we have passed four successive tax cuts disproportionately benefiting the wealthiest Americans. Where is the equity of sacrifice, where the fiscal responsibility?

4. Why is it that a nation that possesses the strongest military forces in the history of the world has to activate the National Guard and reserve units, sending them overseas, while at the same time forcing enlistees in the "volunteer" military to extend their service against their will?

5. Do we have a plan in Iraq? How long will our troops be bogged down there? Have we already destabilized the middle east in such a fashion as to provide opportunity and encouragement to bin Laden and the very terrorists that we profess to oppose?

6. Why are we allowing our environmental protections, dating back to the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, to be systematically eroded, not by due process of law, but by executive decree?

7. Why have we abandoned the government's natural regulatory functions in such a way as to allow and encourage harmful criminal activities such as the savings and loans scandal, Enron's overcharging California for electrical power, then "cooking the books" and spiriting away billions of dollars from ordinary investors and pensioners, etc., etc., etc.?

8. With our "borrow, borrow, borrow, charge, charge, charge" economic policy, are we burdening our children and grandchildren with paying off the national debt when the well runs dry?

9. Given the prominent influence of extreme radical conservatives in the present administration, are we headed toward a theocracy featuring a series of holy wars abroad and an increase in religious and racial intolerance at home?

If you love your country, vote. Please.

I think the only presidental election I have missed was Eisenhower. Actually, we went and since we had just moved they wouldn't let us vote. If we had kept our mouths shut we could have voted. I'm sorry I voted for Reagan. Back then, we voted Republican. That's the last time I voted Rep. Voted Dem. the next time he was up. Although my hubby still always voted Rep. When I was younger I always thought things would get better and they pretty much did until Reagan was in. It was the first time I ever had the thought that they would never get better and so far, I was correct. Well, I do take it back. I never voted for Clinton, so guess I must have voted Rep. Kind of like who is the worst of the choices instead of who is best as there was no best.

Because it's the War In Iraq - not the War on Terror. Even during the first war in Iraq, their scuds could hardly get off.

2. How can it be that a country that in 2001 had the financial means to eliminate the national debt and adequately fund social security is now running $500-billion-a-year deficits?

The President did not plan for what comes after the US beat-up on a small nation.

3. How is it that we are fighting two wars, one in Afghanistan and one in Iraq, and also fighting a "war on terrorism" at home by expanding "homeland security," yet we have passed four successive tax cuts disproportionately benefiting the wealthiest Americans. The rich must not be prevented from getting richer. I have to admire Hollywood with all their money and stand to gain from the tax cuts, do not support the President.

4. Why is it that a nation that possesses the strongest military forces in the history of the world has to activate the National Guard and reserve units, sending them overseas, while at the same time forcing enlistees in the "volunteer" military to extend their service against their will?

Wait, the Draft will return!! And all those supporters of the war will be worried about their own young men and women being sent to the middle east.

5. Do we have a plan in Iraq? How long will our troops be bogged down there? Have we already destabilized the middle east in such a fashion as to provide opportunity and encouragement to bin Laden and the very terrorists that we profess to oppose?

There is no plan but we must "stick to the course". You figure.

6. Why are we allowing our environmental protections, dating back to the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt, to be systematically eroded, not by due process of law, but by executive decree?

Dair's oil in dem dair hills. The business of America is business, and the family business is OIL

Busisness is business.

8. With our "borrow, borrow, borrow, charge, charge, charge" economic policy, are we burdening our children and grandchildren with paying off the national debt when the well runs dry?

We had a surplus but that's gone, yet we will have tax cuts so the kids will pay for it down the line.

9. Given the prominent influence of extreme radical conservatives in the present administration, are we headed toward a theocracy featuring a series of holy wars abroad and an increase in religious and racial intolerance at home?

We know better than God on what is good for the country. Other counries have their own Gods but they don't think like us. You figure.

If you love your country, vote. Please.

Why? After he won the last election, he stated he was going to unite the country. Yeah...

I am voting for Kerry. Bush has had his chance, and it's time for a change. I don't really care much what other countries think of us right now. I have a feeling most countries have hated the US for some time and are using this president as an excuse to voice those feelings. Sometimes I get mad when they make their anti-American anything statements, but then I take a step back and realize how ignorant they really look.
I met a man from Ireland a few months ago,and he assured me that only a few countries hate America, and that they are just the most vocal. He was a smart, smart man.
Anyhoo, I'm voting and I can't wait.

I keep my views on the privilege of voting very simple- 1. People died so that I could vote in an election.
2. If you don't vote. don't *****.

I know who I will be voting for. I believe that this is the most important election I will ever have voted in and I will NOT waste it. I will be there when the polls open (and Lord knows I'm not a morning person) - but I will be counted!

Well, I guess it doesn't matter who would be better now. The Redskins lost today...that means Kerry is supposed to be elected, right? ;)

Poor rest of the world, too!

I am on pins and needles here, hoping against all logic that Kerry will somehow manage to pull it out. I don't think I've ever been so depressed about a presidential election, even when Reagan was re-elected. This whole day has been depressing.

:sheesh:

I think the election were rigged because I can't believe what's going on in this country.

I'm feeling really depressed now. It wouldn't have been so bad had the control of the Senate gone to the Democrats. But now we'll have Republican White House, and a widening majority in both Houses of Congress; plus, the judiciary is looking more conservative by the minute. What a sad day...

At least we've something we all can agree on!
When did that happen the last time? ;)

No, our liberal majority is just scaring off the conservatives on this forum.

1. Good question, Mathman. The reason could have something to with the fact that we are winning this war. Incidentally, I don't remember any big protests over sending troops to Bosnia.

2. Social Security is and has been going broke ever since LBJ raided it to fund his Great Society programs in the 60s. It is a system that is doomed for failure as it no longer brings in enough money to support todays seniors and retiring baby boomers. Also, no one counted on a war, and wars cost money.

3. Tax cuts benefit the people who pay taxes. I don't know how many poor guys sign paychecks, but as long as the rich are making money, they are going to be hiring people and spending their money on new homes, new cars, new boats, etc. People who build the homes, the cars, the boats, electricians, plummers, and all the other "working people" keep working. This is America, there will always be someone who makes more than you, there will always be someone more poor than you. Don't play the class envy card with me, I'm sick of hearing it.

4. We have an all volunteer armed forces. They are the best in the world at what they do. I think they realize going in that there is a chance that they might have to fight a war. The Dems are the ones who wanted to bring back the draft. Kerry even talked about sending in 40,000 more troops. Where did he plan on finding them. This war is every bit as important and necessary as WWII. Better to be fought now, there, than here later.

5. How long is a Chinaman. I'm sure there is a plan. Now, quit whining about how long and get behind the troops.

6. What executive decree are you referring too??? While some conservation is good, some of it is down right bull. Let the planet earth adapt to itself.

7. Anyone who does those crimes should be prosecuted, I agree.

8. How you spend is all personal responsibility, just one more thing that my generation seems to know nothing about.

9. Extreme radical conservatives??? Surely you jest! We are the main stream. The Democratic party has been hi-jacked by cultural Marxists and is so far to the left that I doubt any of you even eat on the right side of your plate. No, Mathman, we love freedom, and people of all races and religions. We believe the job should go to the best man/woman qualified, and we believe that freedom is the solution for the human condition, not government programs and quotas. We believe that each new life is a blessing and possible genius, not a burden that society must feed, cloth, and educate, or a choice to be eliminated. We believe in the right to bear arms to defend our homes and loved ones, as well as our way of life.

God bless America, our troops and our Commander in Chief, and ALL OF YOU!
