Public Skating Session Music

Another pet peeve of mine vis-a-vis public skating sessions
(aside from the roller derby on ice syndrome). The music --
the AWFUL, BLARING, ROTTEN!! ARGH!! YUK!!

How in the world can anybody skate "recreationally" to heavy metal, rap, elevator music, the "hokey-pokey", etc? Maybe I'm betraying my age as a Baby Boomer, but plu-eeze, let's have some decent music to skate by.

How about recreational sessions that play only classical music?
Of course, I'm sure the wise guys who mix the music would be sure to throw in "Flight of the Bumble Bee" and other frenetic numbers just to drive everybody crazy. :rollin:

Re: Public Skating Session Music

At our rink, they play the local radio station during public skate. It's not so bad when music is playing, but it's very difficult to get too excited about artistic expression when it comes to the Mattress Giant jingle!

Re: Public Skating Session Music

The music at my rink hasn't changed since I was in grade school-- Juice Newton, Air Supply, Kenny Loggins, Journey, and an occasional "hip" retro classic like "Come on Eileen" or "Heart of Glass." The one exception is Sarah McLachlan's "Building a Mystery" which you'll probably hear more than once if you get to the public skating session early and stay until Zamboni time.

Re: Public Skating Session Music

One rink plays all nu-metal, perhaps this is what inspired the Slovenian skater to use Marilyn Manson at Worlds this year :smokin: , and another one plays a mix of everything, so during a two hour session, there's usually about two songs that I like.

But I don't skate nearly well enough to worry about artistic expression. :p

Cheers,

Laura :)

Re: Public Skating Session Music

Our rink does a decent job of keeping up with the times on the music front. What perplexes me is the lack of quality in the sound systems at the rinks. Ours is okay. I have been to some competitions where the sound system might as well be a jam box perched on the boards. Some do not have cd players. Boggles my mind. And, in my last competion I had to have my music restarted because it was so distorted I thought that they had started it in the middle. That was kind og embarrassing. Am I being a spoiled brat?

Re: Public Skating Session Music

When I was skating back in the 70's I trained at a rink in Paramount California called Iceland. If I remember they had an organist. The organ was up high at one end of the rink. Even though I was a teenager I thought the organ player was a hoot. I wonder if they still have that organ there.

I haven't been to a public session for awhile but I know that the music they play can be <span style="color:red;font-family:times new roman;font-size:medium;">loud</span>.

Thanks for that blast from the past...let me just shut my mouth and be thankful for what I have ;)

Somehow, I can envision the organ player and the music...

Re: Public Skating Session Music

Actually, the music at most rinks in Canada (BC anyway) is a darn sight better than the music at roller rinks! The Wurlitzer organ just does nothing for my skating!

Re: Public Skating Session Music

I skate recreationally at a rink in San Francisco, and they play HORRIBLE, TACKY music. A few years ago, they used to allow people to bring in CD's and ask the sound guy to play it, but not anymore!

[c]<font size=4><font color="#008000">dlksk8fan...I visited Iceland about a year ago for nostalgia's sake. As of the year 2002, that organist, who is now in his 90s(!) is still there every Tuesday night. I've noticed that he's having a little trouble keeping steady time these days, but it wouldn't be nice to say anything about someone who's managed to live that long and somehow remain vertical. Incidentally, that 50-year-old Zamboni is also still situated in the corner for display purposes.<font size=2>

Wow the organ player is till there. He was old when I was skating there! I haven't been to that rink in over 20 years. Trained there in the 70's when Diana De Leeuw was training.

I just moved back down to So Cailf, so maybe I could take a drive to the old Paramount rink.

Public Skating Session Music

I've skated at public rinks in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, and there was a common denominator in all of them - the absolutely rotten (IMHO) music that was blasted through the rink during public skating sessions.

Sometimes it was organ music, sometimes it was elevator music, sometimes it was live performance music -- whatever the case --- it was definitely time to invest in a heavy-duty set of ear plugs.
