Rachael looks like Scarlett & Patrick Rhett from GWTW. Ah, they look exquisite together. These kinds of functions always bring out the romantic in me. :) ***Note: my favorite picture of them is the one where they are dancing, laughing, smiling***

Btw, the poster that mentioned quinceanera is right. I recall when I was serving as a PCV in Paraguay, South America, we were all invited to the mayor's daughter's quinceanera, and it was FANTASTIC! They sure know how to put on a show. (:^)

Ps. This is not Adam Rippon she is dancing with in the other picture, how can you even confuse him with Adam?:unsure:

It wasn't just the American South, though that region tends to hold on to traditions longer. It was actually done in England originally, I think. It was the occasion of the young ladies coming out (or being presented) to Society. I think the original implication was that they were now officially marriageable, though these days, as SkateFiguring says, it's a tradition, a reason to have a big party, and something that can be done for charity. As another poster said, it is like the Spanish quinceanera in that regard.

The nice thing about skaters is that they can probably walk around in a costume with more ease than most girls, so they'll have a lot better posture in those dresses! And they'll dance, better, too.

Scratch all that. The proper footwear is a pair of glass slippers.

Or fur slippers, to be authentic according to some. Definitely fur ones if the ball were held where I am, in the midst of a white Christmas.

That is my thought too, Olympia. And Rachael said that she had already known how to curtsy from skating while the other girls had to learn how.

eta that this thread is a good respite after all those sleep deprived days of watching skate competitions on the other side of the world!

I'll check out the Russian babes on youtube. Maybe I'll picture them in those glorious balls thrown by the Czars.

I've read/heard interviews with men like Ricky Skaggs who joke about their kids teasing them for the long-in-back (as in longer than Plushy's) mullets a lot of young men wore in the 80's -- but I gotta say I think the recent young men's hairstyle with the hair on the side swept forward and sprayed in place is very unattractive. I'd take a mullet over that!

Rachael's escort may cringe about that hair in a few decades, what? Again I just find it very unappealing and doesn't flatter anyone. But pulling my eyes away from the silly hair, his face looks much fuller than Adam Rippon's -- I don't think that's Adam (is that really a question or just a joke?).
 
Yeah, the first time I saw that style, I thought, is the guy losing his hair prematurely and trying a comb-over? That's the style Justin Bieber wears, right? I heard one newsman refer disparagingly to "his little hairdo" and can never look at that style with a straight face again. Definitely in second place behind the mullet!
 
In my life time so far, no "look" has been worse than the pants-on-the-ground jeans for "men" and overweight women doing Britney Spears. I'm very tolerant and accepting of different styles but those days my eyes were constantly assaulted by exposed derriers and big bare sometimes hairy bellies.

No adults should disparage or copy any teen heartthrob look IMO. (edited to clarify what I mean is that if a look works for a teen heartthrob, good for him/her. They shouldn't be ridiculed by adults who can't carry such look. Rarely can others, especailly older people, look as nice as the original if not downright ridiculous. This often goes for adult looks too. As much as Farah Fawcett's 'do was admired and copied, no one wore it like she did. Bless her soul.)

Rachael looks good in white. Maybe she should consider a white costume. I would like to see whoever styled Alissa this year style Rachael, too.

Rachael Flatt made her social debut Dec. 22, at the Colorado Springs Debutante Ball, along with 26 other young women.

"It was so much fun," said Flatt. "I enjoyed catching up with the other debutantes after their first semester of college. For escorts, I had my dad, Patrick Chan and Alex Levine, who was my neighbor growing up in California. We danced the night away, and then I paid for it the next day in training!"

Rachael's Grandpa and Grandma should be there to watch Mr. Jim Flatt as well. :)

Half a $million raised is not shabby.
 
I'm so glad they shared these pics with us all, it's like we were there too. :)

Mr. & Mrs. Flatt have a lot to be proud of, their daughter is such a nice well-rounded grounded young lady, anybody would be honored to have her as a daughter. And it's all because of how she was raised, to be respectful, polite, friendly, nice, honor her elders & tradition, intelligent, athletic, and on & on & on. She's a reflection of her parents and their upbringing.

BRAVO, MR & MRS. FLATT!!!!! :thumbsup:

p.s. she reminds me a lot of Kimmie Meissner, whom I wish would come back to skating one day, her beautiful aura is greatly missed. You don't know what you have until it is gone...
