Random Figure Skating Questions

Dear God, I hope the skaters aren't reading these, and that any skaters who mention the Internet are just talking about a few random tweets. It never crossed my mind until I saw folks asking about commenting that a skater would read these boards. Why on earth would a skater do that? What is to be gained? Crikey...

I applaud Alexa Scimeca's sentiment in her TSL interview: paraphrasing: I never read or listen to anything on the Internet, I like to keep my focus. Chris can read it because "that crap" (exact quote) doesn't affect him.
I also got the impression Alexa was talking about commenters like TSL rather than random fans, which were not in her equation at all. That's just my impression.

I am pretty sure Adam Rippon posted on here once using a handle very close to his twitter / Instagram handle. When someone went OMG Adam is that you, he disappeared tho.

Oh Canada...........I have another question for you. I really love tennis and it's the only sport I was ever good at before I went on the road as a dancer. Is Eugenie Bouchard popular in Canada? I just saw a feature about her on the Tennis Channel and other than the fact she seems to have a crush on Justin Bieber :scowl:. She seems like a smart and talented young woman.

The pairs team, Christine Hough and Doug Ladret, from Canada play the Russian pairs team in The Cutting Edge.

Katarina Witt was in Ronin.

Both very small parts.

Thanks Ice Dance, I just saw this or I would have said something sooner.

Carol Heiss was in "Snow White and the Three Stooges"

Taylor Firth played the female lead in Cutting Edge 2 (she made it to Senior US Nationals one year).

Scotty Hamilton has played himself in a couple skating movies.

And yes, some skaters read the boards.

Hey guys, I was just watching one of the old commercials that contained my voice but, not my face. It was the J.G. Wentworth commercial that took place on the bus. I was the "I have an annuity" guy. I know a lot of skaters and dancers have done extra work in movies and commercials. Have any of you ever done theater or TV? If so, how was your experience?

I can answer you that question too, if I may do so ;) as I go to most of the WTA tourneys and slams.

Genie when I spoke to her, mentioned that it can be hard to walk on the street, as Canadians are very enthusiastic and fanatic about their idols. Selfies, autographs it´s all there and she was also crowned the Canadian athlete of the year (Bobbie Rosenfeld Award) in 2014, when she was playing incredible tennis and reached the Wimbledon final + the semi´s at Paris and Melbourne.

There has also been a "Genie Army" movement as of late, usually colleague students dressed up in maple leaf colors to support her, they are similar to the Fanatics fan scene that followed Lleyton & co.

In Toronto (Rogers Cup), most people only came for their Genie - it was an incredible atmosphere when she played Bencic - goose bumps everywhere, but she lost and Belinda silenced the crowd. That said, there are also a lot of people who really hate Genie - but I will not write about this further, as I find it disrespectful towards an athlete to act as they do. No podium for the haters, as I always say :slink:

Right now Genie is having some serious problems with her form and a concussion she suffers from since the US Open when she slipped. If you would had seen her the day after, I don't know - it just was heartbreaking :(

She is very talented indeed, but she must get back her confidence and focus on the game again. If you step on court, then because you want to play this game, you must have fun hitting the ball and this feeling she must find again.

I have a question about Fan Fests. Do the skaters actually look at them?

For privacy reasons no names, but yes I know of several who read the forum.

I remember Genie getting that concussion from a fall in the Locker Room at the US Open. It was very sad and I think she's getting ready to sue the sponsors of that event. Have you ever seen Genie's twin sister Beatrice? I remember seeing their picture and being completely shocked as I'd followed Genie ever since she won Junior Wimbledon. Maybe they don't like being photographed together at Genie's events as I've never seen Beatrice and I've seen Genie play live for a couple of years now.

Don't watch tennis and none of my friends do but we all know exactly who she is, probably the biggest female athlete in Canada right now. Our impression of her is positive, great athlete, nice girl.

Beatrice was in New York as well, but I have not spoken to her. Genie does indeed sue the USTA, she filed a lawsuit last week and seeks for monetary damages, as her world ranking has dropped by 13 since the incident and might drop further. She also could had won the tournament and missed out on price money. She was still in all three competitions, mixed, doubles and singles.

It´s quite a tragedy, I hope to see her back on court in January.

Genie tried to play again recently ( In China ) and had to withdraw due to dizziness. She said that she may have returned to competition too soon following her concussion. I hope she returns home and takes a good long rest. She's played constantly for the past two seasons and with her new superstar status, she's had to do a TON of press and sponsorship appearances. I've seen her on a couple of shows in the states so I can only imagine how busy she must be in Canada.

BTW, I hope Josh doesn't try to return too soon as I'm sure Genie's incident scared her. I'd hate to see the same thing happen to Josh.

"Blades of Glory" had Peggy Fleming, Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton, Brian Boitano, Nancy Kerrigan, Sasha Cohen, Tiffany Scott, Todd Sand, John Zimmerman, Kyoko Ina, and Yuka Sato. Some of those skaters just appeared in the movie, but some--like Peggy Fleming--had acting roles.

Black is slimming. Everyone looks better in black. ;)

True........But that's not the reason we were told to wear black by our coach. Not only is black slimming, it also provides a contrast to the color of the ice. It's easy for me to see body lines when my students rehearse in black as it stands out against most colors. Could you imagine how difficult it would be to have your students wear tan body suits and tan shoes on a wooden dance floor? My EYES!!!!! :drama:

I remember seeing a skater ( I think it was Lucinda Rue ) wear a white body suit with a dance hood attached to it. A dance hood is basically a swimming cap made out of spandex and bedazzled with rhinestones. Dancers in Vegas wear them all the time.

We could talk about lines and slimming effects and calming effects on minds and stuff, but I really think it's just more like a lot of exercise gear comes in black, especially for guys. Sorry to burst bubbles!

i always just took it as fact, but then suddenly got curious...

well, contrast indeed may be a factor for test skates... Imagine Maxim Trankov skating in his SP outfit - you barely see him >.>

Karne, that's a cute statement but it's not correct. There are ton of black dance and exercise clothes because in my case at least. That's what most choreographers make their dance students wear. ALL of my students are required to wear black when we're working on a competition program or preparing for concert. I have so many sets of black dance attire because 99% of the choreographers I danced for required it.

With the exception of Vegas ( Where all female dancers were required to wear Character Shows and Tights just to audition ) In LA, most dancers will show up at an audition with a full face of make up, perfect hair, and their cutest Black Outfit........

But Maxim did skate in the Russian test skates with his white costume...
