Reactions and criticism of judging by Network commentators - NBC, CBC, BBC, etc

I don't feel like women should be judged based on whom they marry, so for me she gets a pass. The other judge seems like a jerk but I think Inman was equally a jerk leading into Vancouver, and he still judges. I feel there is a legitimate argument for any of the top 3 to be in the gold position. I just hate seeing people attacking each other or the skating experts simply on the basis of expressing a difference of opinion.

I see we do not have the same view of fairness as should be required in judging figure skating. It is a difference of opinion and I wish no longer to discuss.

So Western judges are not corrupt? Half the people here think the USFA was in collusion with Russia on this.

I never said Western judges are not corrupt. Does Western judges being corrupt make it okay for Russian judges to be corrupt? 2 wrongs do not equal a right.

Christ, if you're gonna argue, stop utilizing logical fallacies.

Half the people where? And in what universe does it make sense that the US Figure Skating folks would be colluding with Russia on this? What would they have gained?? No US lady got a medal. BTW, on the subject of a possible deal between Russia & the US (to gain team gold for Russia and dance gold for US) that was rumored earlier in the games, Dick Button got it right. He made a comment to the effect that the US Skating Federation wasn't smart enough to make such a deal. In any case, Davis & White didn't need a deal to get the gold. Russia probably didn't either, even if they did benefit from some suspicious judging/manipulating of marks in the team event.

French news said US-Russia brokered a deal where US would get the gold in Ice Dancing in return for Russia getting the gold in certain events.

See post #408, just above. That news report was highly suspect and was not substantiated. The original rumor was Russia - Team Gold, Ladies Gold (Lipnitskaya) and US Gold in Dance. Did not make sense to trade one gold for two. Just silly.

The point is that, if there is corruption, everyone is corrupt. "Two wrongs don't make a right" shows you have great wisdom, did you come up with that yourself?

Nothing about this "controversy" is substantiated.

Great. So why are we holding competitions again if corrupted judging is a given? What kind of nonsensical argument is this?

"Two wrongs don't make a right" is a well-known proverb.

drivingmissdaisy, Many, many people on this and other board disagree. Not to mention many figure skating experts - skaters, coaches, judges, commentators, etc. This controversy is not made up and it is not sour grapes. Serious review of the protocols of the ladies - and other events - reveals a number of irregularities. I'm not just talking about the top 3 in the ladies event, but skaters below them - both those who benefited from apparently over-inflated PCS scores but those who got dinged. There were plenty of questions raised during the team event as well. The sad thing is that even if those of us who disagree with the results had a change of heart and said "ok, she won fair & square", there have been so many concerns raised about the judging not just here but elsewhere this season that is just impossible to trust that the judges judged fairly and impartially. I'm sure you'll disagree with me, but I firmly believe that if all the skaters from this event were to go to Worlds next month and skate in exactly the same way, the marks would be very different as would the final results. The CoP has not fixed the problems in figure skating judging. It obscured them for awhile, but the system is still open to manipulation to bring about a specific desired result. The fact that judges are now "anonymous" leads to even less transparency and more suspicion. This is a big reason why figure skating has lost so many fans over the past decade and a half. It's not only at the Olympics that the judging is sometimes bad; it's just more obvious because there is more attention focused on it. I'm still a fan but I am becoming less interested in following a sport that has such pervasive judging problems.

Don't bother, lilahozi. There are some fans who will overlook questionable judging if their favourites won. They don't care to analyse why Adelina was 7 to 8 points above Mao in the free skate. They don't want to question the components of a young brilliant but otherwise unpolished skater. So long as the judging is in their favour.

No. because Russian won, that Phycho thinks it's fair.
Look at all the articles about the result from different country.
Germany France Austrailia UK. They all think YuNa should have won.

Your favourite won so you are going to overlook the fact that the judging panel was biased towards the Russians. You don't care whether decisions are made with fairness and transparency. As long as our favourites win we don't care whether it was fair or not or that edge deductions/sloppy presentation are conveniently ignored.

Kostner and Kim were robbed big time. Figure skating and Sotnikova too in many ways.

I don't think there was anyone who expected Adelina to win gold prior to the event. If there was, I didn't see one. lol. So "your favorite won" is a bit generous. I don't have time or reason to search for drivingmissdaisy's previous posts, but I assume s/he was rooting for Yulia at that time.

That is the single most distasteful nature about this scandal. They don't care about individuals in an individual event. Adelina/Yulia are necessary and disposable simultaneously. All they needed a Russian lady who did not splat (for plausible deniability), and Adelina delivered on that front. Her coach says "We won." I am curious who those "we" are composed of.

Adelina was on no one's radar before the SP, which I think makes her SP score even more baffling than the FS. For her to get within a point of Yuna with a 3T-3T is far crazier than anything else I've seen here.

Yulia at least escaped this sh-t show by falling, so congrats to her kind of.

Jonny Wier said YuNa is a real Champion, Adelina won by home advantage. in an interview with Korean TV(MBC)

Whats is he doing?????lol

So if she'd won you'd all be ganging up on her?

I will say if Julia had actually delivered and won, the media would be behind her 100% cause they love the cute little girl from the team event and she was already pegged as a contender beforehand. A lot of the shock and outcry comes from the fact that Adelina is a complete out of nowhere name for most people outside the FS world. But still, I wouldn't wish this on anyone to have their victory under so much scrutiny and getting insults/threats all over the place.

Even looking at Julia's perfs on youtube, there's a looooooot of Yuna fans who came out of crazytown to post hateful stuff on them even though she wasn't even involved or on the podium here.

Why wouldn't 2-for-1 make sense? The U.S. wasn't competitive in Men's or Pairs, and only cared about the judging in Dance and Ladies. (the bronze in Team was inevitable).
Put ladies off to the side for a moment since Russians were main competitors there....

So you have a situation where USFS is primarily concerned with fixing the results in Dance. Russians say give us Team and Pairs and you have a deal, you think the USFS would say no and risk D/W losing? Or they would make a deal?

------

Then you get to ladies...both US and Russia competing against each other. But all of a sudden look at Adelina's, Julia's, and Gracie's scores skyrocket while everyone else gets the same scores they always receive more or less.

I wouldn't believe it as an American, but Gracie's 136 with a fall in the LP cannot be explained, and Julia's multiple falls in the LP got 135. Those results are fishy just like Adelina's almost "world record" score.

-----

It doesn't take much deduction to conclude the French report was probably right, with the extra controversy being that US and Russia teamed up to boost each other's ladies as well.

Too bad for Gold and Julia they fell or stumbled so much. The protocols suggest that if they went clean it would have have been Adelina, Julia, and Gracie on the podium over clean Yuna, Mao, Kostner, everyone.

That's just not right. Too much smoke = hot fire

I don't agree with the outcome either. She did skate somewhat clean( no not really) but, she was very fast & it was like Jump, Jump Jump, cross over, Jump Jump Jump. She had speed & jumps. Meanwhile, YK had ART, Jumps, and yes speed (not a quick as the Russian lady). What can I say that hasn't been said already. The do feel sorry for she did nothing wrong but, if she is competing in 4 years. The next winter games are in Korea( I think). I really wouldn't want to be her & go to Korea. Now, that will be nasty. She should enjoy this while she can
