Reputational judging in figure skating

Does reputational judging prove that most judges don't really understand what they are supposed to be assessing? Otherwise they would objectively assess each performance on its merits, right? 🤔

I mean we've discussed reputation judging a lot here. It gets tiresome. I don't think there's many who defend it. People just tend to shrug because of how accepted its become. I dont really know any other sport where something like that is standardized and so impactful.

I look at it this way. Of course judgement is influenced by reputation. If a new painting by Rembrandt
were suddenly unearthed it would ve worth a million dollars regardless of its "objective" artistic merit.

As David Pelletier put it back in the 6.0 days, "If I didn't want to be judged I would be going downhill on skis." (Instead of coaching in the National Hockey League.) Michelle Kwan always got high marks in "Kwanliness." Anyone who doesn't understand that needs to find a different sport to follow. :)

Of course now we have the Code of Points... ;)

But seriously, the interplay between "good skating" and :"skating the way that good skaters skate" is quite a subtle one, I think. Sort of like, "What is Mathematics? It's what mathematicians do."

Also skating skills are objective wether you want to agree or not.

Some people find certain characteristics of skating superior but there is no empirical way to asses it.

There is a regional aesthetic to skating that people will just disagree upon.

"Reputational judging" is when the skater I like doesn't get the scores I think they should get. And doesn't outscore a skater I don't like, or doesn't outscore them enough, or whatever.

Yawn......🥱

Is it? I thought it was basically just a standardized practice that you need to have a few good placements before you get the highest PCS regardless of your raw skill. I didn't know it was a deniable position. Has anyone got top PCS at their first showing recently (past few years)? Or you're baiting a little bit for a reaction from OP, which is fair enough. Fight fire with fire as they say.

Most of the time that I hear the phrase, it is connected with a skater that fans have heard of, and directed against a skater that fans have heard of.

A true unknown, like the skaters in the JGP from countries with no skating background at all, rarely has folks talking about reputational judging.

In my experience, of course.

Indeed. OP is boring and as women event is over, we can move to more interesting topics.
Petr's PCS was adjudicated as worse than Nika Egadze (who is criminally underscored). I think that says it all. Do the judges even understand what they are watching?

This is something that shouldn't be treated so flippantly. It's about the integrity of the sport.

Oh, really? So in period before 2022 it was all fine and justified and now, when event is scored moderately fair, you have problem that "AIN" aren't ovescored as the used to be when they were russians? You are entitled to your opinions and your first 10 posts were moderately amusing. I won't be commenting on scoring of skaters who shouldn't compete in this event.

Scoring has been outrageous for 3 years. Malinin is a better skater (rather than jumper) than Yuzuru Hanyu if we are to believe the judges.

I'm not sure they really understand what they are watching.

Well, it does prove my point. They don't understand what they are watching if Adelia was just 66 PCS.
While I was watching before scores came out I sad to my bf.. there’s no chance this pcs outscores Leona. And it didn’t. I think the score was very fair. Her skating was nice looking but it was a hit more simple. Nice choreography but in comparison to Leona, lacked maturity and difficulty with skills and transitions. May not be a popular take but I think 66 was right on.

This is a strange debate to be having on a thread about reputation judging. Adelia Petrosian came into the recent qualifying competition with a big reputation and high expectations. Her performance was OK, mildly disappoinying after all the hype. She got OK marks, nothing to write home about. Certainly her reputation as a big jumper did not factor into the scoring as far as I can tell. She got points for what she did, she did not get any points for what we hoped she might do. What's the beef?

I think for a first-time senior event, showing her programs for the first time this season, her marks were better than OK. If she were from any other country - sorry, "AIN" - her SP would have been scored at a 30 at best, low 60s for her FS (which was way more her style). 66.07 with all her components in the 8's, including several 8.5/8.75/even 9.00? please. Her GOE was also through the roof on jumps that didn't have a ton of height or flow coming out of them, while other jumps were pristine and did deserve strong GOE. But it was like if she landed the jump she would get +3. It doesn't really matter since I do think she deserved to win overall (preferred Gubanova in the FS).
