Johnson 5+ points ahead of Bariev. Who'da thunk it?

Keegan Messing hanging in there.

But - It's not over till it's over.

I am not surprised at all that Johnson is in first ahead of Bariev. Alex had a strong showing at Liberty two months ago, and he has had ample time to bring his skating up a notch or two since then.

Also, Keegan Messing won the preliminary FS in the Junior Men's event at Liberty with a score of 118.44 (the highest FS scored by any of the Junior men in both the preliminary and final rounds) but opted out of the Final. He is quite capable of skating a blinder in the Free in Ostrava.

I'm sure the home crowd is disappointed Brezina isn't there to bring home a medal for the host country. The dance team has a great shot at winning though.

Mysliveckova / Novak have an excellent chance of winning a medal. I'm not sure they can win this event unless they stay on their feet through the OD and FD. The Russian team Monko / Khaliavin passed the 150 mark last season (153.51 at JGP CRO), while the Czechs haven't come anywhere near that mark since JGP GBR 2007 (148.08).

Gilles/Dohohue may turn out to be a medal threat as well.

Here's some hearsay info on the U.S. men's short programs yesterday: Alex Johnson reportedly skated clean (3F+3T, 3Lz, 2A) and Keegan Messing may have turned out of his solo 3A attempt.
