Sasha not going to 2007 Nats

Bottom line, Sasha skated a very good Olys and was noted by some of the Hollywood crowd and went to the Awards and hence the Red Carpet. I wouldn't say she was 'burnt out' but she sure was hyperventilating with all that publicity she was getting.

What happend between Oscars and Worlds is anyone's speculation.

It's known that she feeds off the attention and she wanted to milk that Medal for all it was worth...even use it to jump-start an acting career. But she may have to give up skating if she's really serious about it.

Emily had done nothing in the GP events to show that she belonged in Torino. She scored a total of about 125 points in each of her GP events, and she had at least one big sloppy fall in each one. Emily went to the Olympics in part because the USFS wanted her to go (should Kwan have to withdraw) because the comparison to her sister would create major publicity for the USFS (and of course, it did). Therefore, Emily was majorly held up in the PCS scores at 2006 Nationals. Her FS was a mess with a fall and a doubled jump yet she got unreasonably high PCS scores to keep her ahead of Taylor and Liang.

I think that no matter how poorly Emily skates at 2007 Nationals, she will be held up once again, and her presence on the World team is assured. The hype will continue even if it's undeserved, regardless of how unfair it is to the other skaters.

But Emily still placed well within the top 10 (8th I think) despite all of her mistakes and crappy skating skills. :sheesh: I suppose the Olympic judges held her up as well because for some reason they just love Sarah. Really , get over it. Michelle messed up and Sarah won gold. No need to bash the sister.

Emily doesn't need to be held up.It's not as if Alyssa's crappy jump technique and Bebe's inconsistency - as well as Katy's mopping up the ice at SA, is going to be much better.

I believe the USFS is committed to pushing Emily so they give her high PCS scores even when she doesn't skate well. With Kwan and Cohen gone, they feel they need an icon, so they're going with the Hughes name.

Without those high PCS scores in the 2006 Nationals FS, Emily would have placed behind Katy Taylor. The USFS wanted to make sure Emily was on the podium last year, and they will be even more protective of her this year, regardless of how she skates.

Maybe soogar doesn't think Emily needs to be held up, but it seems the USFS isn't so sure.

I disagree that Sasha skated well at Olympics. Actually most of hte ladies were weak in this Olympics, so IMO it was a very weak field. If Sasha had skated like that in 1994, 1998 or 2002 she would have been looking at a placement of 5-10. Not that great. Same goes for Irina. Her skate wasn't good either.

Emily's PCS scores are high because of her innovative and difficult spin entrances, ability to sell a program, great edges, overall skating ability and musicality. Plus her speed and power is impressive as well. Katy isn't in the same ballpark as Emily.

As for the Hughes name- Sarah is hardly an icon of figure skating.

 Sarah Hughes is the 2002 Olympic Gold Medallist. She is just as much an icon as Kristi Yamaguchi was.

I know that i am selfish, but i really wanted her to keep skating. Nothing gave me grater pleasure then watching her perform. She is a beautiful skater and will be sorley missed. I REALLY hope that I get to see her compete again soon.

It's not that it was a weak field, it was just that most of the ladies struggled during the free program. Not much one can do about that but award gold to the one who makes the least mistakes, and in that case that was Arakawa

....award gold to the one who makes the least mistakes, and in that case that was Arakawa

In a way, that is always the case.

I am fairly sure the numbers were crunched "theoretically" showing Arakawa came out the winner even if the other 2 "contenders" didn't make the mistakes they did. Shizuka was the gold whether the mistakes were made by others or not. The only way she could have lost the gold was to make mistakes herself - not the other way around.

Shizuka scored 191.34 points to Sasha's 183.36.

Sasha's three mistakes cost her -1.00 + -3.00 GOE for the fall on the triple Lutz, -2.86 for the near fall on the triple flip, and -1.14 for the stumble on the 3T-3S sequence.

Slutskaya's mistakes cost her a total of 8.49 points. Add this to her 181.44 and this leaves her 1.44 points to make up in PCSs to overtake Sasha and win the gold medal, if she had skated with her usual pizzaz.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda. :)

I do not have any issues against the Hughes sisters, and I do find Emily rather enjoying to watch on ice. I never was a big Sarah fan in her day, but always appreciated her competitive spirit and the things she did well on ice.

However, I definitely would not put Sarah in the same category of "icons" with Kristi. Yes, Sarah won the OGM and that is her claim to fame, but she is not an icon in this sport, probably more by her own choice than anything else.

So was I wrong - as usual - about Arakawa? I thought that she won regardless of Ira or Sash having a "clean pro." But when I add the potential of the other 2...

Shizuka 191.34 - and a 3 was turned into a 2 that may or may not have been due to previous pros of the others.
Cohen 191.36 - based on "clean"
Slutskaya potential 189.93 - based on "clean"

It appears I MIGHT BE, YET!!!! If one is to conceder the other 2 as having clean pros, then it is only fair to say Shizuka would have done the 3 gaining enough points to still win - for .02 that Sasha lead by in scenario "clean pro." would not have beat Shi-Chan if she did a 3 ( was it a flip I can't remember?) instead of the 2.

Anyway, a win is a win. And agree "shoulda woulda coulda" but they didn't and she won fairly and undeniably by performing a great routine, not just because others fell short. IMO.

It's her b-day so I 'spose I am being protective where it is not necessary again. Sorry.

eta. Apologies for the OT.

But that is the point that people are making. All three made mistakes. Whoever made the fewest won.

Anyway, to me, the numbers don't tell the story of this competition. Shizuka skated beautifully from beginning to end and the judges had no option (and as little desire) but to put her first.

Sasha skated the first minute of her program like a caricature of herself. Then she skated the last three minutes with fire and heart.

Irina  started off bad and got progressively worse.

So, happy birthday Shizuka!

whoa... now I'm a fan of Sarah, but she's not half the icon as Kristi IS (not was)... Kristi is still extremely recognizable in the US... and she kept up her technical skills far longer than Sarah even dreamed of... YES Sarah is a college student, but she left the sport to persue that... a lot of people can't name her as the olympic champ, but they can name Kristi (along with Dorothy, Sonia, and Katarina)

I'm not knocking Sarah, but she's not on Kristi's level at all...

 I understand. :agree:

All comps are "who makes the fewest (or no) mistakes" really aren't they? ;)
My one factor stopping me from FULLY agreeing is, was the 2 really a mistake? I THINK she did it on purpose because she didn't need the 3 to win and it was "safer" making it a "smart" move - a sign of a great athlete IMO often overlooked (maybe not here at GS but generally speaking). Hence that one factor was not a mistake but a "wise" premeditated decision IMO. Her total element score was more then 7 points above Sasha. I really don't think anyone (Sasha included) had a chance against Arakawa. I can't find the "planned" element score possible, but I THINK it was the highest potential as well.

I feel a little bad for going OT, but it is essentially about Sasha and her placement at the olys, so close to on topic anyway.;)

 precisely :agree: What is done and how "sought after" a skater is after, is a defining factor of any "status" IMO.

I see people debating and re-hashing Torino results until Vancouver

people are still rehashing pairs in 94, pairs in 02, ladies in 94-06... and ice dance just about every competition

why should 2006 be any different?
