Sasha's fans and nonfans

I am always hoping Sasha will perform two good performances and win a gold medal, I enjoy her poise, flexibility and extension. Some of what I hear about her personality, if it's true, doesn't thrill me, but as far as her skating goes, I am a fan of it.

A View From A Michelle Fan

As always, I am a Michelle fan. But you know what y'all, I find the more I watch Sasha, the more I appreciate the beauty and difficulty of what she puts out there on the ice. Forget the falls and the bobles, she is an exquisite skater with unparalleled gifts. We will never see her equal again, whether she wins a major competiton or not. She deserves her own special spot in skating lore. Someday I hope she skates a flawless program, because when she does, it will be one for the ages.

I would have to say non-fan

I am a fan of figure skating, so in essence I want all the skaters to thrill me, move me, entertain me and demonstrate to me mastery of all the aspects of skating from the simplest stroking to the most complex footwork. I have my favorite skaters and my favorite programs and music choices, but in general I want them all to be wonderful.

I would like for Sasha to experience the feeling of doing your absolute best when the pressure is on, you have prepared the best you possibly could, and it happens for a skater. It's the best feeling at any level of skating or performance, and I hope she can achieve that as a culmination of her work.

That being said, I do feel her strengths are her spins and extensions, and three jumps, her salcow, loop and flip. She does lack in power, ice coverage, speed and had never shown anything close to proper lutz technique (even as a double) especially compared to many of the other skaters. She has not mastered all the triple jumps. She has not mastered triple-triple combinations, and her footwork is not superior to the other skaters.

But she's nice to watch, and I'm still waiting for her to thrill herself, and consequently, me, with her programs. It hasn't happened yet for me with the exception of a couple of short programs, which are marred by terrible lutz technique.

It's always been all about potential with Sasha, so I reserve the right to be a potential fan. She's still so young.

Views from an uber MK fan

The thing I've found most annoying about Sasha is that she doesn't root for herself... Like we say in my office during cliche hour "she walks the walk, but doesn't talk the talk" and that makes it extremely difficult for me to get into her skating... But then, I do love a confident athlete vs. a pretty skater...

In my less mature days, I've actually been banned from boards for my not so nice comments about her skating (here's a lesson for y'all... don't be mean to a moderator's favorite skater...) but she just gets on my last nerve. At her level, the constant mistakes should not be seen as "potential" but as choking. And all the "look ma, I have no bones!" moves don't make up for that. But that's a personal preference.

I would like to add though, that my husband, a die hard Lions fan, is always telling me that Sasha fans are the truth because they are loyal no matter what and that its easy for me to root for the person who "always" wins... And that it puts my fandom into question because its never been tested... And to be honest, I can agree with that to a certain extent (I'm a Kwanford Wife who loves the Red Wings & Tom Brady) but I'm also a fan of Nicole, Tanya H and Angela. But the common thread between these skaters & MK is the fight. Sasha doesn't have that... The fire is more "I gotta win, I gotta win, I gotta win... D@#$! I fell...I suck" that's not inspiring... That's "lets guess when she falls"

Not sure if this is a proper answer, but that's my opinion of her skating. However, I do hope that for she finds her way and can give those die hard fans of hers something to celebrate... Lord knows they've earned it (and that is totally devoid of sarcasim... before I get banned again! ;) )

I am a fan of Sasha and Michelle. I like Shizuka's skating, but am not a true "fan." I am a non-fan of Irina.

If you watch Sasha only from the ankle up and ignore the mistakes (that's a big IF for some people) she is an exquisite, outstanding skater. As kyla suggested, some of the things she does on the ice are absolutely without peer. We may never see another like her.

 It's your husband who is the Truth if he can stick with the Lions over the last three seasons.

With all this discussion about Sasha (and let's face it, fans can not separate MK out of the picture), no one seems to be thinking about Irina who is THE BIG favorite at this Worlds and she has more worldwide fans than either SC or MK.

I'm a non-fan. I tried very hard to like Sasha, but the many times that I have seen her live have left me cold. Ironically, I like her better on television.

I've nver denied that she has potential for greatness. I just think that the longer that passes the less likely it is that she will meet that challenge. I won't even go into her PR team's missteps or her own interviewing skills. That would take days.

Suffice it to say that I am a non-fan.

There's no use talking about Irina regarding Worlds because a lot of people feel like the battle is just for silver and bronze if she skates clean. Wow I didn't know Irina had more worldwide fans. I just don't get that feeling but it's not a big deal. On the net it's about Michelle and Sasha most of the time.

I don't like Sasha the skater. I don't like Sasha the person. I don't jump up and down clapping when she falls, and do not bash her on internet boards. But I will admit, "bashes" come to my head sometimes when I am reading something about her....I just don't put them out there. People will think what they think. Snide comments from me or anyone else will not change that, as well it shouldn't.

You can be mean to MK at MKF, you might get some flames from the posters there or worst to worst your thread being closed, but you weren't get banned.

Bravo Kasey. Honesty is the way to go. I have had the trouble with the gushing of Irina for years and at one time it got me upset because it was simply coming from some nonKwan fans who spent as much time bashing MK. You learn who they are and kind of expect it.

I am a Kwan fan who would like to be a Sasha fan but just can't warm up to her. IMO Kwan skates for the joy of skating and competing and if she happens to win a title while doing it, even better. OTOH Sasha and Irina seem to be skating for the title and if they fail to win they appear to be very unhappy as if they get no joy from the skating unless they win. The other thing that turns me off about these two is their fans need to protect/make excuses for them as if they are too fragile to be criticised. Let the skating speak for itself.

Not a fan of her skating, but don't mind her as a person at all.

For me it comes down to emotion. Sasha does not move me whern she skates. Her skating leaves me cold. I don't know why. Being someone who works in casting, she reminds me of an actor that has good technique, but works from the outside in - rather than working from the inside (the heart) outwards. If you watch an actor perform and think to yourself, "Wow - what an amazing performance this person is giving" - then that's clue #1 that they are not being successful. The truly gifted actor makes you forget that you are watching an actor.

So when I see Sasha skate, I see well-rehearsed, deliberate "TA-DA!", paint-by-numbers artistry. I appreciate her skills from a cerebral perspective, but not an emotional one.

Sasha is one of the most beautiful skaters that the U.S. has had in years. I think that most of the people don't like her are people that are jealous of her. When she's on the ice, she's like beautiful bud trying to transform into a beautiful flower, eventually the bud opens and their she is. Some Sasha haters say that they don't like her personality and the way she acts--How do they know what she's really like--just from a few interviews that she has given. Sasha will prove herself at Worlds and all those so-sayers will eat crow.

I guess I am neutral. I enjoyed watching her in the beginning--there were unique qualities that I appreciated (the flexibility etc.). Now-I feel like I am watching for falls-which is nerve-wracking. I do think that she has made the whole process too complex and too wrapped around winning. Everyone wants to win-but I think it is monomania at this point with her.

I would be happy if she conquered her demons-but I am not very invested in her emotionally. It doesn't matter that much to me.

Actually, I am not a fan but am a fan of any figure skating. It's true that I like Michelle but don't dislike Sasha. I think, unless she really bombs that the winner would be Irina. She has been so overmarked this past year that I can't see the judges doing anything else. :p
