Satoko Miyahara

The two-time Japanese National champion Satoko Miyahara attended her high school graduation ceremony on the 13th this month in Takatsuki, Osaka. During the ceremony, she was presented a special award for her achievements in winning two consecutive national titles, as well as being selected as a Japanese representative for the upcoming World Championships.

She had been fairly composed throughout the ceremony, but shedded a few tears when visiting her classmates in their homeroom afterwards. “I got the chance to talk to everyone individually, and ended up crying when I was about to tell them I felt bad for focusing on skating so much without doing anything for the class. The tears kind of got in the way of what I wanted to say” – she laughs. She was praised for her efforts in managing competition training alongside her studies in the speech made by the president of the Education Committee. She also demonstrated academic excellence in her mock exams, ranking as high as 6th out of 150 students in English, one of her best subjects. Looking back on the 3 years of her high school life, she reflects- “There were times where school work was also getting hard, but I managed to come all this way without giving up. I think being able to continue working hard is evidence that I have grown.” At school, her favourite place is the library. “I went there quite often during middle school, and used it a lot for classes as well. I loved the calming atmosphere there” she said, showing off a high school girl-like side of herself. She will pursue further studies in English this spring in April as a literature major at Kansai University. As the silver medalist at the 2015 Four Continents Championship (due to be held on the 18th this month in Taipei, Taiwan), she expresses her determination - “I’ve had a lot of 2nd place wins thus far, so I’d like to do my best and aim for first this time.” She will be a 2nd year university student by the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. “Being able to attend the Olympics is the first thing. I will work hard in order to win.” In the near future, Satoko will also look at challenging the triple axel jump.

Satoko Miyahara - The Goddess Who Will Seal Away Her Demons

Earlier this month, Miyahara graduated from high school and wrote “there’s still the demon of the Olympics”.

“I wonder how much self-confidence the me of that time will have. My (personal) demons will come out”.

To research such “demons” Miyahara gathered interviews and such from Torino Olympic Gold Medalist Shizuka Arakawa and Vancouver Olympic Bronze Medalist Daisuke Takahashi.

Still sad by his shoelace breaking in 2010, Nobunari Oda says “Demons are self-made. The way (Miyahara) thinks, she will become a goddess.”

At the Four Continents Championships, she never managed to go higher than second place so she is focused on fighting for a victory.

Other sources have mentioned her practice sessions have been perfect so far.

ETA: The OP of this thread needs to be updated; she got a silver medal at the GPF, won the Japanese Nationals again and her personal best scores are way outdated.

great to see her so determined to win 4CC this time, i hope she does but most importantly she will show us 2 performances she will be proud of :agree:
also congratz to her for her graduation!!! she is still a baby (at least for me ) and will start college! :luv17:
and if i had to pick a person who i can count on to fight their demons, Satoko would be one of the skaters who will be on top of my list, and with each performance she keeps getting better and more confident which helps her for her next challenge,
finally, reading that her practices were perfect gives me hope that she doesnt have any injury (unlike last year :drama:) good luck Satton!!!! :yahoo::hap57::cheer:

Congratulations Satoko on topping the SP in 4CC! Excellent skate. I felt so relaxed watching unlike in the case of some of my favorites.

Yes Satoko! I was litterally bouncing in joy when watching her program! 1st after SP with a new PB of 72.48! Awesome! :cheer: :hap57:
Keep it up for the FP and win the whole competition Satoko!!!:hap10:

I am so grateful for Tiny Queen's consistency  congrets my girl !

For the first time I wasn't so relaxed watching her because I saw her falling on her 3Lz-3T combination in the warmup and she also had to watch Gracie's terrifying program before she went on the ice. But as expected, no matter how bad she does in the warmup or how nervous she is, she delivers. Congratulations on your new personal best Satoko!

I think Satoko's SP is my favorite of the season. Well done, Satoko! Slay in the FS!! :cheer:

A win here will certainly give her more confidence going into the World Championships so I hope she skates a clean, beautiful free. I've read posts here attributing her consistency to her "small prerotated jumps". She doesn't have a lot of elevation so that's why it's easy to be so consistent - yeah that totally makes sense. I find this very disrespectful towards her hard work. She has to jump in the opposite direction of her natural clockwise rotation and she has to do it despite her small stature. She gets anxious just like everyone else, is just as prone to popping or falling like everyone else, but she rarely (if ever) makes big mistakes because she knows how to handle her nerves. But that has nothing to do with her own hard work, it has to do with her small jumps. Wrong. It has to do with the mentality of a champion.

People are very quick to judge her. I bet they would be all like "Wow! Awesome!" if her jumps were higher. :rolleye: Typical for some people to lash out on someone because of one weakness, and because THEIR favourite didn't win.
And we all know that Satoko is a hard worker who wants to get big jumps, though it's taking time. But she's patient, she'll get there eventually. She's young (not even 18 yet), she's mentally solid and train hard, other Japanese skaters having witnessed this themselves (like Marin and Yuna).
Personally, I didn't notice her until last year GP season, when I felt something big in this tiny skater. I believe in her, and in what she'll do in the future.

Not to mention I've seen a lot of people who were supporting and appreciating her last season - but since she started to collect more medals this season it didn't bode well for them anymore because their favorites failed to deliver. Suddenly everyone is complaining left and right about her prerotations and her being overscored. Blame the judging system, not the skater. In real time, her jumps look small and clean; no popping, no falling, no forward landing, no stepping out. The judges check for rotations and nothing else. They don't put a microscope on the take-off, nor watch them in super slow motion. I feel like she has improved her jumps since last season and she will probably continue to do so until she peaks both technically and artistically in 2018. Her jumps may never get a great deal of height but she is working on fixing her prerotations. Yamato Tamura was right when he said there will be a lot of criticism and nitpicking on her skating but he also said it is his duty and responsibility to keep her away from such things and to help her improve. As long as her coach trusts her, I trust them too.

I agree, all the complaints about her jumps are starting to get old. It's not like she has control over her own size, or how the judging system works!

I don't understand why people think that small jumps are easier.I did figure skating for a long time, and I assure that there isn't a easy way to do the jumps.Satoko doesn't jump very high but she rotates fast, and that is not easy to do. So I bet most of the people who say that never skated or did double jumps (or triples).
