Satoko Miyahara

Happy birthday and good luck in Boston Tiny Queen :cheer2: :cheer:

As promised, here is Satoko's interview with Canon.

Some highlights:

You’ve really improved technically, with the two tano hands during the jump combination in your free program at 4CC.

Hamada-sensei recommended that I give it a go back in January, and it felt really good when I tried. I couldn’t pull it off at all in the past, but it seemed to work well with the double loop and I still managed to complete all the revolutions even with the extra movement, so we decided to include it in the program.

Even with that your jumps look so effortless.

My under-rotation issues had already started to improve last year, and this year I could really feel myself hitting the mark on my landings more and more. But if I start to get nervous at competitions my jump revolutions will likewise be affected, so as part of my training I want to make sure that I manage to achieve at least the minimum revolutions no matter what sort condition I’m in.

Have you discovered any tricks for this?

What I’ve learnt from coach Ilia Kulik for the past 2 years is the timing of jump lift-offs. I lack the muscle power in my legs for high take-offs, so we try to utilize the glide of my skates and timing to help me gain as much height on my jumps as possible.

What makes Miyahara-senshu nervous now?

The lack of absolute confidence that I’ll land my jumps every time would still be my biggest fear factor right now. I can do it in practice, but it’s easy to lose that usual confidence in competition. I am always battling with those feelings of doubt.

You don’t think of the top Russian skaters as your rivals?

I don’t see them as rivals. Although we can’t really communicate I’ve known them since our junior days. We do say hi and take photos together when seeing each other at competitions, and I’d like to be able to chat with them more casually.

You also had consecutive wins at Nationals. Are you aware of your place as the top Japanese ladies single skater right now?

I still don’t quite believe I’m there yet when people call me the ace. Mao Asada still has an immense presence. She has been battling for victory at the top of the world for the past 10 years since she was 15. Compared to that I have only been in this position of being a top competitor for about 2 years. I think Mao is really amazing, being able to continue skating and keep that competitive drive even though she’s been under so much pressure all this time. This makes me feel that I also have to put out good results internationally in order to live up to that.

Thank you Ioanna your job is priceless, hopefully she will gain more confidence as a top lady, because this is where she is now <3 I had faith in her always , even many people around were sceptic.
By the way I am singing Tsubasa wo kudasai already 2 days (I love that ex so much) and somehow I am not nervous about her at all, I have very good feelings.

Happy birthday our queen, Satoko! I wish you the best of luck this year!:cheer:

and i am guessing this is your edit too ioanna :luv17: thanks for giving me another excuse to ship Satoko and Yuzu  and cant wait to read Canon interview, thanks for advance!! :thank:

Yes it is :) I'm glad you liked it!

Ahhhh… I can fully express how I love the ship. How pure.. And their costume matched. Just perfect. I want to see more and more the couple.
Thank you ioanna for your job together with the wonderful translation of Satoko's interview.

Reading your comment, I also sang Tsubasa wo kudasai (lol). I also love that song (it’s children’s song in schools, so I often used to sing it.). It’s originally the song of the wish of sick child. The impressive melody and sad and beautiful lyrics… Satoko’s loveliness just tender and ease our mind.
As for her, I’m not at all worried like you. Reading Canon’s interview, she’s just down-to-earth.

Thanks matmuh for your warm words! I'm glad i can come back.:)

About Satoko, the more i know about her, the more i love her. She's really lovely skater both in her characteristics and performances.

The Japanese media has talked to Satoko just before she left to the United States. My rough attempt at translating:

Before leaving to the United States, World silver medalist Satoko Miyahara (18, expected to have chances at a victory) talked with the media at the Kansai Airport. “This is my second participation at the World Championships, so I’m able to imagine most of the atmosphere there. In that way, I’m going with confidence,” she said with enthusiasm.

The gold medal she won at the Four Continents Championships in February was her first overall victory in a major international competition. The skater, who turned 18 years old on the 26th, is entering Kansai University from this spring.

The top Russian athletes will also participate. “Having practiced firmly, I will do my best. I want to aim at a podium finish, but without making mistakes,” she expressed her ambitions.

She looks cheerful and healthy. :)

A podium is clearly what we want for her, and she can definitely do it. :) But she's having a different kind of status from last year. In 2015, she was not among the fav to end on the podium, but she did anyway. And this year, she's one of the fav for GOLD. I trust her not to put too much pressure on herself. :) Even if she doesn't win a medal, if she does performances she's happy with, that will be great enough.

In her interview with Canon she mentioned that having the gold medal as an absolute goal for the 4CC made her very nervous and the quality of her programs wasn't on par with the performances she delivered at the Grand Prix Final. She had a very difficult time dealing with nerves at the 4CC but we barely even noticed since she didn't make any mistakes at all. Now she says she has learned from that experience and will once again focus on delivering satisfying performances at Worlds, and not on the pressure of the competition. Basically she knew she had a real shot at gold at 4CC but she is aware it will be difficult to win Worlds so she will compete a little more relaxed.

Indeed, I remember her coach said that she was more tense at 4CC than before. But with the way she skated, especially the FP, looking so free and happy, I wouldn't have thought so. Can we imagine what it could bring if she stays really calm and relaxed at World, considering her aim isn't as high? Of course, I won't get my hopes too high considering the European skaters (and Mao, who must never be counted out despite this rocky season) will be there too, increasing the difficulty of the competition. But it will be a good motivation for her too.
Her FP and Gabriella/Guillaume FPs are the only FPs this season that makes me feel calm, relaxed and just happy (I LOVE Yuzu's FP, but I'm always nervous as hell while watching it so it doesn't count lol) to watch, and I know she will be able to give those feelins again, regardless how the competition goes.:luv17:

Clean run-through of the SP, what a pleasant (but not very surprising) sight! ^^ And apparently on twitter they said the announcer announced her "Satokoko Miyahara", lol!

Here are Jackie Wong's full observations

Miyahara: 3Lo, 3T, 2F, SP runthru (3Lz3T, 3F, 2A), 3Lz(hangs on), 3Lz(fall), 3Lz2T2Lo, 3Lz2T2Lo

From the looks of it she's trying to fix her flip and her lutz take-off. Her lutz was fine in the run-through and in combinations but she did two more. I'm thinking she's practicing to take-off with less prerotation.

Sending all my good vibes for Satoko's FS
Going to youtube for vids of her SP are a bit painful now with people leaving nasty comments on her videos, and so does going through the ladies sp thread with people gloating (actually being happy!!) over her low scores. Can't help but cringe over such negativity which spoils my mood for this otherwise very exciting Worlds.
I don't know if it's any help - but I really really am pulling for all powers that be or whatever divinity listening for her to do her very best no matter what in the freeskate. I hope she doesn't read youtube comments. Love her to bits. Do your best Satoko!!

I'm with you OniBan. I'm disgusted by what I'm reading and didn't even feel like coming back and posting here. It really ruined my mood too. All that venom is not even directed at the judges, it's directed at her. "She finally got what she deserved" like, really? Where have you all been this season and how many times do I have to repeat the fact that she got UR calls or edge calls at every competition she has been to, except 4CC where a lot of skaters benefited from lenient judging. I have seen no skating specialist or journalist complain about all the stuff people have been moaning about here. FWIW I agree with her score. Except she shouldn't be 3 points behind Gracie Gold in PCS. But that's ok as long as she "finally gets what she deserves".
