PBS does some great documenteries. I have learned living in a land of extended drought that letting my (wife's) lawn grow long really reduces the weeds but more important, it makes its own shade and reduces the water it needs. Forests are very complex, but I really fear for the entire planet and am not optomistic for anyone here who has kids....there are lots of regulators that keep the earth inhabitable but we are stressing them so badly in so short of time that I have to wonder what will happen....In the 50 plus years I have been birding, North America has lost one third of its birds.....I dont even see many swallows, night hawks, short and long eared owls, warblers, etc. You cant spread all that insecticide to grow corn, half of which is used to make ethanol, and not have an effect......mess with the rain forests to make ethanol and palm oil, etc and there is a whole cascade of unintended consequences.Secrets of the Forest - NOVA / PBS

SO SO important!!
Trees alone do not control carbon… biodiverse Forest ecosystems DO!
We all can create our own micro forest systems in a tiny garden patch..
Minimize mowing
Abandon monogardening
Plant native shrubs trees grasses vegetables flowers for wildlife birds and insects
Encourage old growth trees (they survive on carbon!)
Amend soils naturally (earthworms)
Encourage fungal growth..

Its not only oil lobbyists that are the problem. In the last century, I got to see lots of great work from people who cared about the environment. But the real problem, as I told people back when I was in high school, was too many people. Now I would correct that and say too many people who dont care. I am all for raising the gas tax so that a gallon of gas costs what it does in Europe. Try getting a politician to campaign on raising gas taxes and see what they say. The last one who raised the fed. gas tax was Bill Clinton, only he didnt index it to inflation. People seem to have to have their pick ups, jet skis, ski boats, snow mobiles, and other junk toys like huge RVs. The Japanese tent like I do. But the monster is out of control....look up how much energy bit coins take and now AI. People build huge homes that have to be heated and cooled. Look up how much energy fast fashion and consumerism take. There are a few small victories....Borneo rain forests were being leveled to make palm oil...now they have slowed that down a bit.....but they may be too little too late. Even if the US got its act together, there is the rest of the world....and they are still building coal fired plants.Reading through the posts I am encouraged climate change advocates can withstand and over reach the oil/petroleum lobbyists who deny climate change exists.

I try and stay positive but when 1/3 of all North American birds go away in the last 50 years...the time I have been birding...its hard. I no longer have swallows, nighthawks, and some species of owls...warblers are rare...The country that came up with the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act and the Endangered species act and listened to Rachel Carson now spends millions on insecticides to grow...corn...to feed cars....and overbloated pickup trucks.....Rachel would have raised the gas tax. There are few pickup trucks in Japan....Endangered Species Day
