Senior Men Qualifying

Wireless is working (at least right now) in the arena.

Note on Gary Wong (as I sit waiting for the men to start) - He was invited to compete at the World University Games in Torino, Italy. The games are happening this week and he's been in touch with one of the BC Team Leaders. He had his 1st practise and is very happy to be there although he misses being at Canadians with all his fellow BC Skaters. Evidently (I didn't quite catch all the details) it's quite an honour to be invited - you have to be in the top ?% academically and the top ?% in your sport. He's taking a full course load at Simon Fraser University.

Gary is crrraaazzzy smart. What a cool opportunity...it's too bad though, it would have been nice to see how he matched up at Nationals. Oh well, next year!

A bitof chor to start and then into his gorgeous 3z (not the best one I've seen from him but still better than most) / 3a low landing with a step out - I thought he was too slow going into it - guess I was wrong / sit ch sit is nicely done / 3l / 3t / deathdrop is very good with variations on the spin / 3f very low landing but clean with his tongue stuck out at the landing - really kind of cute / big 2a / flycomgo spin with flyover on change of foot / O ftwrk / 3s / sorry got distracted when I got a glimpse of his blades they're different almost like there's a brace between the front and back - I'll have to see if I can find out what it is / last combo jumps was 3l2t2t I think something now quite clean on one of the jumps / there was also strt ftwrk just before the end / T 62.36 C 56.58 Ded 1.00 Tot 117.94 new personal best / currently 1st

3z fell / 2a / very nice xfoot spin with foot variation then another xfoot - not quite Gary Beacom but one of the nicer and more unusual ones I've seen (yes I love xfoot spins) / O ftwrk is ok / ? jump that didn't go quite right that I didn't really see / 3t / 3s step out / sit ch sit with variations / strt ftwrk works with the music / deathdrop with quite good spin / there's been a few nice chor bits in the program / 3t very tight landing 2t step out / 3s turnout 2t / 2a step out / back cam starts a combo spin - very nice pos on the camel but only held it for a couple of revs / T 35.31 C 38.83 Ded 2.00 Tot 72.14 new personal best / currently 14th /

Thanks for your reports Rosaleen!

Very happy for Vaughn, Cedric, Joey and Maxim (all faves of mine).

Also happy for some local boys- Brennan Martin and Tyler Cochrane have much improved!

 for Simon Beaudoin- he's come back from that awful accident and missed the cutoff by less than a point!

Since Rosaleen was able to post quickly, I'll just add some additional comments on specific skaters.

Simon Beaudoin - very nice amplitude and stretch

Gaven Wilder - Music was The Godfather, but the cuts weren't kind to him. It was quite plodding. He must have had some type of costume issue since I caught him pushing up his sleeves at least 3 times during the program.

Jamie Forsythe - really nice positions in his final spin.

Michael Elias - He did this really cool move where he started in a hydroblade position, grabbed the free leg (stretched) and then pulled up into a standing position - very cool.

Cédric Demers - He was in the arena in the morning/early afternoon watching the ladies qualifying and then came up after his skate to watch the rest of the mens.

Brennan Martin - I didn't see a 3Axel either.

William Lindsay - He's got some of the same "chin in the air" in his jumps like Mira - someone needs to break him of that habit.

Kurt Stoll - music is Batman Returns.

Bryce Davison - Combo at the beginning was really nice. Really good speed throughout the program.

Joey Russell - Really nice program, good stretch in his positions. He got a partial standing O from the crowd.

Maxime-Billy Fortin - Nice spring and height in his jumps plus fast rotations. If he can work on the spins, he could be a player.

Sylvain Bouillere - Music is from Edward Scissorhands. The second half of the program was stronger than the first. (I think that he did this program last year as well.)

Vaughn Chipeur - Also had a skid spiral - one of my favorite moves. Wonderful speed throughout. You could tell that this program had been choreographed with COP in mind. Also partial standing O from the crowd.

Aaron Van Cleave - On that xfoot spin, he also varied the speed - slow/fast/slow/fast which was really interesting.
