Senior Men's Free

It was a major mistake for Jeff to announce that he would be retiring after the 2010 Olympics. That made it easy for the judges to award the championship to another skater who gave a great performance.

^But it's not like Patrick didn't deserve the title. And Jeff probably would have won if he had rotated that 3Lz.

^ It would have been impossible for the judges to deny Chan no matter what Buttle announced. Best men's performance of the year! He just seemed to levitate on his jumps, like some invisible force snatched him up into the air without any effort on his part.  Whereas in this performance Jeff had to work for everything he got.

I don't think that had anything to do with tonight's results. Patrick was the best tonight and he won.

What an illogical comment! Patrick was clean and Jeff had 3 mistakes in the LP, thus allowing Chan to win.

I agree that Chan absolutely deserved to win. But I have seen too many cases where titles and/or podium spots were awarded to previous champions because they WERE previous champions.

Congratulations, Patrick! Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. He's really as lovable in person as he is on the ice, and his parents are fantastic!

Both Jeff and Shawn are really great guys too! Kind to fans and friends alike.

Good luck at World's guys!!!

Congrats to Patrick Chan for his first National title. It is always exciting when a new talent emerges. I wish both Patrick and Jeff the best of luck at Worlds.

Super conrats to Patrick Chan! He brought me to tears and I was speechless! An absolute gift to the world! Definitely a 2010 medal hopeful. He was stunning! Every aspect of his skating was breathtaking. I'm really lost for words! Extremely proud for him and wish him luck for Worlds.

The pressure will definitely be on him now next season to add the quad and a second triple axel, preferably in combo. I've heard he's already working on a quad — anyone know how that's going?

Congratulations to all medalists and especially for Chan and Buttle who won a slot to compete at Worlds!!! In spite of the mistakes Buttle did, the gold and silver was very, very close. Hopefully Buttle will do less mistakes at his Worlds freeskate. Now at Nationals it was really difficult to be the last to skate, he got much more pressure. As a skater Chan is very good indeed, but while skating his look on the ice does not impress or please my eye the way it does with Buttle.

Good luck to both of them at Worlds as they are e.g. competing against Lysacek and Weir....

Wow, just watched patrick's FS and it was magical!!!
Like everyone, I too saw something special in his skating and I'm so happy for him!!:clap:

He's so young and got scads of potentials, I hope he stays on top of pressures and keep improving.

I think this will ease any tension in Buttle's go at Worlds. He is no longer top dog and the pressure is off.

Patrick is now carrying the Maple Leaf to Sweden and the question arises: is he good under pressure?

Best of luck to all in Gothenburg.

Joe

Patrick Chan is amazing! He's my new favorite now, this kid has the whole package except the quad. Once he gets the quad, I can see him on podium of Vancouver Olympics, he's Canada's best bet.

Patrick Chan interview

  • The crowd was great. He didn't feel tired at the straight ftwk, the crowd carried him through.
  • His goal for the worlds is to bring back Canada 3 spots; there is incredible depth to the men's skating in Canada. He wants to work as a team with Jeffrey to bring back 3 spots so that guys like Vaughn, Shawn and Chris will have their chance at the Worlds.
  • He took Kurt's advice to trust his training and mental run-through of the triple axels. His shoulders got lower at the second half of the program, which helped him conserve his energy and keeps in his zone throughout his program.

Thanks for sharing that article, bx11! It sounds like Jeff and Patrick have a lot of mutual respect for each other. :agree:

Before the men's SP, Kurt Browning said although he and Elvis were fierce rivals at Canadians, once they both made the world team, they were teammates who supported each other. I hope the same will be true for Jeff and Patrick, and I hope they'll also push each other the way Kurt and Elvis did...and take a bit of the pressure off each other at Worlds, too.

Jeffrey will retire after 2010 Olympics is so obvious. It really doesn't matter whether he announces it or not. If he announces that he'll retire before 2010, that will upset the skating world and might affect the judges' decision if it will affect them.

Congratulations to Patrick Chan - the next generation of Canadian Champion! I still love Jeffrey Buttle.

Congrats to all 3 men on the podium:rock: Patrick:rock:Jeffrey:clap:& Shawn:love: Woohoo!! Way to go!!

Hopefully next year there will be three spots for men at Worlds:agree:
