Shen & Zhao

An article on Shen & Zhao's preparation

March 15, 2007

Summary:

Today’s training is free programs run-through. Shen & Zhao, Pang & Tong, Zhang & Zhang all participated. Both Pang & Tong and Zhang & Zhang had falls in the run-through. S&Z completed the program cleanly, especially their throws and sbs spins have won applause from the reporters.

The reporters told shen & zhao that they’ll be deeply missed if they do decide to leave after worlds. ‘We are also reluctant to leave, but age is really a factor. Last week, we ran through four programs (not sure what he meant), and we also added some additonal amount (to our normal training). Due to the intensity (of our training), I still don’t feel fully recovered even up to today. This makes me realize age is the reality.’

Shen also told the reporter that after more than 20 years’ intense training, and various high-pressured competitions, they really need a break. Regarding whether they’ll come back in two years, both of them said, ‘If we are healthy, and if our technical condition permits, we will certainly come back. OGM is still our unfulfilled dream.’

Zhang & Zhang

An article on Zhang & Zhang's preparation:

Three pairs ran through their short programs. Zhang & Zhang did a very smooth run-through and there’s little sign that Dan Zhang was still recovering from a bad flu. The reporters clapped for their good performance.

Hao Zhang, however, told the reporters that their entire season has not been smooth and their conditioning is in its worse shape of their entire career. They haven’t had good scores all season long. Dan Zhang had some health problem at GPF, and caught a bad flu last week. ‘Dan Zhang had a fever and her temperature was running at 39c. We had to abort the planned intensive training last week. This will likely have an impact on our performance in Tokyo.’ Said Hao Zhang.’ Our conditioning is not so good this season, and we are sorry to let our fans down. The training plan for the worlds has been further interrupted because of Dan’s flu. If we are unable to perform as well as we should in Tokyo, we hope our fans will not be disappointed. Please have faith in us, and we will work even harder next season and get back on track. Our ultimate goal is 2010.’

Bin Yao

An interview with Bin Yao

This is another interview with head coach Bin Yao. He told the reporters that Shen & Zhao’s conditioning is very good; P&T and Z&Z are having some problems. But he thinks it’s very normal for them to have an off season since athletes are not machines. He also points out the importance of being able to perform when it matters.

Bin Yao briefly commented on Yan Liu, saying her poor performance is due to lack of high quality training after Olys. However, the national team is still trusting her and giving her this opportunity. They hope Liu can face up to the challenge at the upcoming worlds. Regarding Bingshu Xu, ‘She is still too young, and needs to overcome lots of challenges. her road is still long.’ said Yao.

The article also mentioned that Shen & Zhao like to compete in Japan. Both S&Z and P&T praised the warm but polite demeanor of Japanese spectators. They mentioned the Japanese audiences are very considerate of the skaters. They keep quiet and clap when it is necessary, and they will only move around in the arena after one program finishes in order not to disrupt skaters.

website

There's a Chinese site that focuses mostly on Chinese skaters for the upcoming world championships. Even you can't read Chinese, there are still tons of very recent photos you can click on.

Chenjiang Li's pick is Takahashi(?) for gold. He believes Brian and Lambiel will vie for the silver medal.

The following interview with Yan Liu's coach says her condtioning has improved significantly since 4cc mainly because her mental status has changed. Yan Liu's training is going well and her jump success rate is very good at the moment.

Are we going to see the ultra-consistent Liu return? We have to wait and see. I still think they should send Binshu Xu instead of Liu.

Shen and Zhao are going to win , no doubt. They are perfect in practice, perfect in cempetion. they are happy and in love and healthy. nobody is gonna beat them this year. The other chinese teasm don't sound as formidible. I think THis is really time for the Germans to swoop in and claim silver. THey have had a good season and their programs are difficult and entertaing. they make a beautiful couple on the ice and they manage to make everything higher points earners without slowing down or looking ugly.

I'm not sure but I think so. If they come to Toronto I will definitely go for it.
