Shoma Uno to change coaches

Why does anyone think Yuzu has any say in who Brian takes on as a student? The last time Orser took on Boyang ( despite Jin decided he doesn't want to leave China in the end) he pretty much decided himself and then rock up at Yuzu's house just to deliver the news ( he said so in his interview).

Yeah, I noted that earlier. Now, it might be that Orser would consider it more of an issue to be taking on Hanyu's top domestic rival as opposed to one of his numerous foreign ones.

But I'd say that, as far as the TCC goes, the most relevant considers are when Shoma wants to train with Yuzuru, not the reverse; and whether Brian and co. want to take on another student of Shoma's stature, given that the TCC seemed to be stretched rather thin last year (though admittedly the exodus of Barkell and his students might change that a bit).

If Yuzu is OK with it, (and I know it’s a big if) I’m still sold on TCC.

Shoma will be a welcome addition to any coaching team; it’s not like he “needs” Eteri, Mishin, Raf or Brian for politicking or for reputation. He’s the Oly silver medallist, and he’s not pleading with anyone to “please take him”. Whatever jumping assistance he needs, Brian, Ghislain, and the team can give to him. He will have skaters who speak his language. He will have Jason on the welcoming committee. What more could any skater want:biggrin:

In addition, although I think he selected them because they did his exhibitions and he’s comfortable with them, I think David and Shae Lynn point to a North American or Japanese coach. Has any Eteri skater ever used a non-Russian choreographer? And although I think Mishin would not care, is he really wanting to full time coach for a skater he would need to travel so much for? It is usually the travel that causes our elder statesmen coaches to cut back or retire

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it:)

Yes she sent Voronov to Jeffrey Buttle, and she worked with russian choreographers abroad like Marina Zueva and Nikolai Morozov in the past.

Probably that doesn't mean anything.

While it's true that we don't know Shoma's mind, it's not unreasonable to operate on the assumption that he's looking for a jump retooling first and foremost. He does not need a radical coaching change to help his components; the judges always reach for the high 9s when he skates well. And he's acknowledged in the past wanting to work on jump technique, which is the thing that people have criticized him for, and he's coming off a season where his jumps were decidedly messier than his erstwhile rivals Hanyu and Chen.

True, but I’m sure it’s not the whole story, and even if it were, there have been some really random suggestions.

TCC has Ghislain as the full time jump coach. These days he even goes with Yuzuru to competitions.

Gheslain and Yuzu seem to have a special relationship though. He certainly isn't working with everyone (not Medvedeva, Brown, or even Daleman). It's probably more appropriate to call him a specialist. I imagine if Shoma were to go to TCC (which I still find to be a reach among his options), he would probably be Brian's.

Anyone encroaching on Gheslain would probably be more of an affront to Yuzu's training than anyone being with Brian.

Shame he didn't go to Eteri, i think his style of skating is closer to Daniil's choreography than what people might think, and his jumping technique is similar from the one from that group.

That's the reason I thought a month age in the "Japanese skater switching to Eteri?" thread that he'll go to Eteri's group. Shoma could end up worse trying to learn toe jumps with straight backward takeoff from other coaches. I still believe he'll go to Eteri.

Oh that's interesting. Do you have the link to Brian's interview?

im betting on Tammy G for when he's in the US and Hamada helping when he's in Japan. He gets to work alongside Vincent (who whilst many would agree is no where near Uno's level, has a '4'Lz and his recent ''''''''''''win'''''''''' over Shoma might be a good motivator as well) plus Tammy and Hamada seem to have some sort of agreement with sharing students so??? This is my prediction, I'm very sure Shoma already knows where he's going, especially since he's scheduled a time and place with his new choreographers

Haven’t read whole thread and looks like it’s still a big secret where Shoma goes? I love Shoma and I have heard Kurt praise him as a skater’s skater. Maybe Kurt Browning is turning to coaching? Well I do not know what is the options but if he wants jumping coach why not try Plushenko or Yagudin?

As far as TCC I think it would be great for Yuzu if Shoma came. With the loss of Javi, Yuzu doesn’t have a top male friend to push him daily. I think Yuzu would welcome it. I think Shoma might be tired of being second to Yuzu but he is getting older and is surpassed by Chen so maybe he would like daily competition with the amazing Shoma who speaks his language.

I cannot see Eteri as she is good with little girls. Does she have any male student that jumps quads? The language issues and the whole environment is not good there as so many girls leave when the draconian methods stop working after puberty. Anyway I wish someone will just tell us already. Enough suspense yes?;)

Thank you, I did not know that. I would like to see Shoma with a JButt program too.

Tammy G. is an interesting take, and given her cooperation with Mie Hamada, that is also a possibility.

I'm not sure that Shoma actually knows yet (although that is an interesting point too). I do believe, as has already been pointed out, that it depends totally on what Shoma thinks his issues are and where Shoma thinks those issues could best be addressed.
I think comfort level and trust is important to Shoma, having stayed with "coach Fluffy" (I love that nickname:) ) for so long. Where does Shoma think the best coaches are, that he can trust to give him what he thinks he needs?

We shall see:biggrin:

I think it’s because, the story goes, that before Hanyu moved to Toronto Orser asked Fernandez’s permission. There are certain skaters who don’t thrive under the constant pressure of training with a rival and a great coach will take that into account.

At this point in his career I don’t think Hanyu would have as big a say in who Brian brings to Toronto Curling & Cricket Club (side note: I dearly wish to know if they have a Cricket pitch there, especially since it’s the Cricket World Cup right now) but I think it isn’t a bad assumption to make that it might not be too comfortable for two direct competitors to be always around each other.

This thread should come with a poll :] I am not very surprised to see Shoma leave, he did look very disappointed with his results in the latter half of the season. I'd cast my vote in for Team Rafael - I think that Nathan's presence would motivate Shoma greatly, and I doubt he'd settle for anything less than training alongside at least one top 10 male skater. As people have said, TCC seems a bit crowded at the moment, although a few have left so TCC would be my next guess. I doubt Shoma would fancy the idea of moving to Russia.
I wonder if it was himself or the Federation who made the decision! Anyway, good luck to Shoma in the new season, curious to see how the change reflects in his skating!

Mid August is very late time for setting new programs. But it makes sense if he will be somewhere near SLB and DW at that time, so i think, he is considering someone from NA or Canada.

Joseph Phan's main coach is Brian (you could say 'he is Brian's'), and he works a lot with Ghislain too, and Ghislain has also travelled to competitions with Joseph. Ghislain also works with Shingo Nishiyama.

Mishin denies that he will be Shoma's coach.

However, Mishin is happy to work with non-Russian skaters.

Is she the only foreign skater or will there be someone else?

– There will be more, of course. Last year, for example, World silver medalist, the Japanese Wakaba Higuchi trained with us. Unfortunately, she won’t join us this year, she’s sick. Many foreigners have always trained with us. Now there’s a simplified understanding of patriotism. We have two hard weeks ahead in Courchevel, where we will work with our and foreign athletes.

Because Boyang doesn't compete with Yuzu for the #1 Japanese skater position. I think Brian would be crazy to sign up for all the tension that'd create.

What I find puzzling is why people think Shoma needs to work on his jumps. Judges don't care, they give full credit for bad jumps too.

Evgenia has mentioned Ghislain's name as coaches she work with, maybe during group training. But Evgenia's one on one coaching are with Brian & Tracy only.

While Jason doesnt even get one on one with Brian. Tracy Wilson is Jason's main coach. He gets one on one with Tracy, Lee Barkell, Karen Preston. Jason mentioned TCC has group training where all or most of coaches stand in a group and observe. They will call out to a skater, correct mistakes, make comments, etc.

For Gabby Daleman, her main coach is Lee Barkell. Though with Lee leaving TCC we dunno if Gabby will still be there next season.

So, from this, I conclude that Brian's students will have Ghislain as their jump coach. Ghislain will replace Brian at tournaments when schedules overlap. Other than those already mentioned, there's Cha Jun Hwan.
If it's another coach is the main coach, Brian will go together whenever he can.
