Skate Canada announces figure skating teams for ISU Championships

I also agree with you regarding the selections for the World’s. I also agree that Lulu shouldn’t be sent. I also believe it should be Uliana, more consistent. I believe, she wasn’t herself at Canadian National. It was uncharacteristic. I believe, she wasn’t 100% well. I believe,Kaiya should have went too, but I don’t have a problem with Kara going. Kara really has improved with Lee Barkell as her coach.

If Shiryaeva is lucky, she will get a Challenger next year, though that single combo mistake in SP sure buried her deep.

Pretty much as expected. Nothing for Lauriault/LeGac, but I understand; Fabbri/Ayer need the 4CC exposure.

I think they should have just gone ahead and named Romsky to Worlds, but at least they announced their plan in advance, so it isn't so personal.

I'll have to read the press release to see if they have named the alternates.
-------------------
ETA: they didn't name alternates. Sure there will be some; will probably have to wait for official entries to find out.
I understand they announced in advance that the men would be determined after 4cc but you would think would do the same for the other events or at least ladies. Wesley and Aleksa are VERY lucky. I expect because the door is open no matter how sick/injured they are they will go to 4ccs to try to earn a spot to worlds. I wonder what would happen if Aleksa and Wesley say place ahead of Roman but say 2 points at 4ccs what would they do? Regardless Canada's men are not guaranteed to make it out of the Short program.

both Canadian men made it out of the Short program last year at worlds... and these two guys are still competing this year.
Of course, it can happen that someone pops a jump and doesn't get through but all these guys will offer a quad + 3 axel + 3-3 combo which is usually enough to qualify for the LP.

Once a FED has announced HOW they will select their skater, they better stick to it. At this point, in our close up vision, of course, ONLY Roman seems healthy enough and should represent Canada to Worlds. That doesn't mean it would be fair to suddenly CHANGE the criteria for selection and eliminate two guys who were not healthy and BASED their decision of not competing because they STILL had a chance to get selected.

So of course, the selection will be announced at 4CC. In the past, no matter how many points ahead were scored, the best skater got the nod. (For instance, Amélie Lacoste getting the nod over not 100% healthy Cynthia Phaneuf with an almost even score). In this case, who knows, they may consider different factors. I doubt Wesley or Aleksa would be sent ahead of Roman unless they showed that they are actually very ready to compete. Skate Canada is fully aware that this selection is crucial as they need to qualify their man for the Olympics so they are being cautious. Nothing wrong with that.

For women, Canada has had one frontrunner for a while. Maddie. Though she has had her share of inconsistency issues, they pretty much left it to her to show she would deserve that spot. She did brilliantly at Nationals, so it's fair game. If someone else had won the title, they may have and rightfully so, offered the spot to that woman exactly based on the fact that Maddie has had her share of opportunities.

I actually have zero problems with the selection rules, nor the selection itself this year. It's pretty straightforward and fair, and I like giving a hard time to feds about their often weird political choices... not in this case :)

Fair is when you get the results you want lol. I do hope that Canada will find the skater that guarantees them an olympic spot. The fact that I am saying this is a very sad statement about how Canada's men's skating is not doing so well. Their national silver medallist had no 3A or quad - yikes.

But their national silver medallist has something else, he's mesmerising, he pulls you in. He pulled the house down. Skating is not just quads and 3As, it's also performing, and Anthony has the kind of charisma seldom seen at that age. So wonderful to watch! And he's going to jr worlds which is perfectly fine for him. Let the rest of the world enjoy his skating too! No yikes, but someone to be proud of!

I am not sure about that... See, I wanted John Kim and Fée Ann much higher ;)

I tend to believe that spots are earned when they are needed. If our men do that poorly and cannot qualify at worlds or at the qualifying event, then that's it... One man would most likely be going for the team event anyways.

I tend to see it differently. There were other men without quads nor triple axels at Nationals. Edrian, Bruce... Antoine... many more... the fact that Anthony placed SO HIGH speaks volume about what he brings to the game :
1)Across both programs : he missed ONE element... he popped his planned 3axel. (he's been popping it pretty much all season but it's there because he can rotate/land it in practice)
2) his spins/steps and PCS are so strong that he makes up a lot of points where others who may have bigger jumps cannot make up points
3) don't you have a celebrated American skater without a quad who's been doing well for himself for almost a decade now ?? why is it right when it's jason brown to be an artistic skater and not right for someone like Anthony ?
4) BTW David Li who finished 3rd also didn't present a quad nor a triple axel
5) Both David and Anthony are junior skaters. David just switched coaches. Anthony had a terrible season last year after a leg fracture.

I tell all my kids that everyone has their own path to success and to keep working and believing in themselves. I have a hard time with comments being so dismissive about a young skater who is getting high marks based on what he brings.

If others want to beat him, they need to LAND their jumps. If they are injured, sick, absent for whatever reason, or too inexperienced to nail it under pressure (like John Kim who landed three quads/ out of 4 attempts) then it just is fabulous that a skater took the challenge on and succeeded on his own terms.

I really like Kaiya Ruiter FS Wonder Woman. It was my favorite program of the season by the Canadian ladies. I would have like to see her compete this program one last time. I'm sad that Kaiya receive no assigmnent at junior world or 4CC :(

Kaiya may keep Wonder Woman for next season. It's a good program for her.

But with the assignments, she had the misfortune of placing 4th in the year where Skate Canada did a better job of making sure that the podium candidates had a chance at the minimums. With 4CC:

1 - Maddie needs the ranking points for Worlds when there are Olympic spots on the line, plus she can get another competition out of her new free skate in front of judges
2 - Sara-Maude was noted by Mike Slipchuk for peaking at 4CC and has placed 9th there in both her appearances, her history makes it easy to assign her there given how much Tallinn Trophy boosted her confidence for Nationals
3 - Katherine has placed above Kaiya twice now and won Warsaw Cup. She has the second highest SB of the Canadian women and could increase it at 4CC. That could help her get a non-host GP assignment and maybe open up a host spot at SCI.

And with Junior Worlds, the 3F gave Kaiya trouble at Nationals. When it's the required solo jump for the Junior short program, they would not want to assign a skater who is having issues with it to Junior Worlds.

(not that Kaiya was the only one having issues with the 3F at Nationals, lots of edge calls or warnings for the 3F in the free skate protocol but none for the 3Lz)

I also noticed this which is WEIRD :)

do you think they decided to focus on the flips because of junior worlds ??? or do we really have women who LIp and don't Flutz in Canada... because that's also weird ;)

I checked the top ten on skating scores
  • Maddie basically doesn't get edge warnings, and didn't get any at this event. Same for Katherine and Breken
  • Sara-Maude had one 3F! at Nats. She doesn't get edge warnings often, but had a 3Lz! on the JGP in 2022 and a 3F! at Quebec Summer Skate 2023
  • Kaiya had two 3F! and one 3Fe at Nats. She usually has more issues with her 3Lz, getting a ! or e ~50% of the time (mainly !), but has gotten warnings on the F as well internationally
  • Kara has had 3Lz! a couple times, but normally clean. She gets calls on the 3F more than half the time, both e and !
  • Megan has had one 3Lz!, otherwise no edge calls on that. She gets calls on the 3F half the time, usually !
  • Hetty has no issues with 3F, but has had 3 3Lze calls, all in 2022. No calls/warnings since then
  • Uliana has ! on the 3Lz a bit over half the time. Her 3F is usually good for edge, but she has had a few 3F! before
  • Fée-Ann has no edge calls on her 3Lz. She gets calls on the 3F about 1/3 of the time, both ! and e
Kaiya and Uliana are the only ones who regularly get edge calls on the lutz, and they do get no call often also. So I wouldn't say SC necessarily ignored lutzes (at least based on the top ten I checked). It does seem like they were strict on the flips at this event.

I'm not honestly sure that a junior worlds assignment would have been helpful to Kaiya at the moment. She already has quite a bit of experience of championship/youth olympic events at that level. She is in the middle of reworking her technique following her coaching change and now has a clear period to focus on that without needing to worry about being competition-ready. She would need to rework both of her programmes for them to be suitable for junior worlds, and that would be a lot on top of the technical changes she is trying to make at the moment.

Thanks! So our women are lippers ;)

dang ;) that's too bad... btw... also, they should have announced the location of the next Nationals on Sunday... it's good marketing to say " see you next year in ...."
I agree. That bugged me - and many others, I think - when they didn't do it at last year's US Nats. I suspect it was because they didn't have Wichita firmed up yet, but I don't know. Perhaps the same situation with Canada Nats. That is a shame though. It really is "Marketing 101."
