Here I go, posting my predictions for Skate Canada just a few minutes before I start watching Skate America.

Ladies was really heart wrenching, because I like all of them! In the end, I decided to take it out of my hands and use the absolute PB order. With two exceptions.

Firstly, I swapped the Russians. Big risk given the difference in Liza’s form last season to that of Zhenya and Satoko. But, I want to take a chance on my girl! (Leave her alone, sabinfire – she’s mine! )

Secondly, I moved Rika ahead of Alaine. Come on, after having my favourite programme of last season, I couldn’t bear to have her outside my Top 5!

With the Men, there were also a lot that I liked.

The Top 4 by absolute PB order were the guys that I was putting in my Top 4. But, in a slightly different order. Obviously, I have put Yuzu on top. Next on the list was Patrick. But, given that his comeback season didn’t go as well as expected (even though I liked his programmes!), I have been a bit cautious here. Hence, I have swapped him and Yan Han around.

The other significant change was with another Canadian, Kevin Reynolds. Kevin was 5th on the absolute PB list. But, like Patrick, that was from way back in 2013. Since his comeback from injury, Kevin’s scores have been a lot lower. Consequently, I moved him down a few places, to just ahead of Michal Březina (somebody else who has an absolute PB dating back to 2013).

With Pairs, there was no way I wasn’t going to have the top 2 as Meagan and Eric followed by Yuko and Sasha. The problem was who to put in third. And it was between 4 of the remaining 5 couples!

There is only 5 points in difference between the Lubov / Dylan and Haven / Brandon. That makes it hard enough, but then there is the complicating factor of the new Chinese couple. Zhang Hao’s former partnership with Peng Cheng had an absolute PB just above the Canadians, while Yu Xiaoyu’s former partnership with Jin Yang had an absolute PB just below the Americans.

So, the sensible thing to do seemed to be to put the Chinese in the middle. But, we don’t know what they are like in competition conditions. So, given the question marks, I put them as my alternate.

Now for the elephant in the room. Tessa and Scott making their Grand Prix return in Ice Dance. They won the Autumn Classic last month, their first competition since the 2014 Olympics. But, the score was 40 points lower than their absolute PB from 2010 Worlds.

That said, that score would still have only 2 couples ahead of them on the absolute PB list. And, given that I always intended to put them in third, this seemed like fate was trying to tell me something.

Wait till you see – they’ll go out and win it now!

My major problem was which way round to put my Top 2. I could see arguments for both of them to win. Both had scored their absolute PB’s at Nationals, and Anna and Luca were about 3 points ahead on that. But, that was from 2014, whereas Madison and Evan had scored their absolute PB in January.

Both couples scored their ISU PB’s at 2016 Worlds, and the Americans were about 3 points ahead on that.

On balance, I should have gone with the Americans. But I like the Italians more (not remotely connected to the fact that Anna is absolutely gorgeous. Honest…). So, I went with them.

The other change I made was to move Hawayek / Baker up to 6th ahead of Paul / Islam. I know, there is a full 10 points between their absolute PB’s. But, I really rate Kaitlyn and Jean-Luc. And I would like them to be my alternate.

You can tell that I don't look at others' predictions before making mine, can't you?! Looking just at this page now, mine are so left-field!

Well, Skate America was a disaster, so I decided I could afford to take a few risks this week.

The one I am really worried about is the Ladies. I kept changing my mind about whether to take the risk of swapping the Russians or play it safe. But, I decided to take the risk to make the point that I was still right behind Liza.

And I have always rated Yan Han. He is definitely capable of being up there. It is just a case of whether he can do it on the day.

For the sake of my predictions, I hope they can both pull it out this week!

Well, there is the FS for hope. ladies ... men ... pairs ... dance

My predictions are toast. Compared to last year, when I hadn't any time to make up my mind (or watch programs) and went for most events just with PB list, I did quite well, this year my careful ordered selections and picks aren't doing good (achieved by thought! and watching progams!, and sometimes by liking of a skater or pair)

conclusion: next time PB? Doubt it. Too much fun to predict. :yay:

Perhaps I will also try next time the draw from a hat :yes2: and then doing really good

Ice Diva is a sole leader in ladies after SP. Placing Satoko 5th was an unusual choice that has worked....so far.
