Slutskaya to compete at World Championships

Regardless of what is being said in articles, Irina had her skate test over the two past days and she didn't do very well, apparently she was disappointed with her performances. She only landed 3 clean triples in the LP. There isn't an official decision yet, which belongs only to Irina, and AFAWK, she's going to announce her decision on Monday. The federation will give her the spot, she's the one who has to decide.

I just hope Irina makes the right desicion for her. She knows her body and whether she is ready or not. I personally wouldnt mind if she sat this worlds out and came back even stronger next yr! Whatever she chooses to do, I am wishing her the best of luck. She is truly an amazing athlete--and you would think, after sitting out the whole season, she would bring back some old programs! No, she has debuted two new programs at her test skate. she is quite a figher. GO IRINA!!!! :D

YES! Thank you for the link. It is great that Irina will be @ Worlds. Russia needs her if they don't want to lose a spot @ 2005 Worlds.

I don't expect Irina to be in top physical condition, but I'd hate to see her struggle like Sarah did at the 2003 Worlds. We're so used to seeing Slutskaya contend for gold. I hope she can give three respectable performances in Dortmund that she can be proud of....medal or no medal.

Sounds like Irina is in a tough spot. She doesn't sound as if she is physically well enough to compete, yet the Russian Federation wants her for a top 10 finish. If she skates badly, she will probably be criticized, although I'm sure her fans and some media critics will note her illness. She may also put her health at risk. It's one thing doing a test skate, quite another skating with all the pressure Worlds brings with it no matter how many times you've been there. If she doesn't skate, the Russian Federation will criticize her for not helping them to secure two spots for '05. Sounds mostly like a lose-lose proposition to me. I just wish Irina the best no matter what she decides. I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't make her final decision until after Q rounds. Just a guess.
Rgirl

I agree Rgirl. I just pray that she doesn't get sick again, and I would love for her to skate really well. I have always liked Irina, and I just hate to see her put in this situation. I hope she just relaxes, skates well and comes through it in good health.

Yeah. I agree with Rgirl. This is a tough decision for Irina. If she skates I hope she really to well. Even for Rusian federation IS top 10 finish is good enough. But for her own sake I really hope if she competes she should finish at podium, otherwise just skip this one consentrate on fully recovery and go for next year's worlds.

I believe if you send only one skater, then that skater has to finish in the top TWO, not the top 3. Japan sent only Honda last season, hoping he'd finish top 2 so Japan would have 3 spots this year. But Honda finished 3rd, and Japan has only 2 spots.

Elena Sokolova finished third at Europeans, and now she has to contend with the Japanese and US ladies, too. There is no guarantee that Elena can finish in the top three, let alone the top 2.

Who knows. Irina may just pull out some great skates onthose days that she is to skate. Anyway I'm scared for Irina and I just hope my dream about Irina doing well at the Olympics is true for several reasons. This will mean she is doing well.

GO SLUTE!!

I am happy Irina is back. I just hope she is truly health. I really want to do her best. With Slute back, ane with Kwan, Cohen, Arakawa, Suguri likely opponets it seems this will be a very exciting worlds.

Irina shouldn't skate

I've sometimes thought that Irina should have won more World titles than she's had. I think that she should take off this season and come back strong next.

Welcome to the forum, Preztobe. I agree. I think with a full year's training and good health next year she can win it all in Moscow in 2005.
