Small Gestures that Became Iconic

Please keep them coming! You're taking me back to so many great moments and reminding us why we love figure skating. :thank:

What are iconic gestures? I believe we remember many years later, many pictures, gifts, drawings depict those movements, those are in videomontages, etc.

I think we should leave it open to interpretation. I love what everyone is coming up with.

There have been many discussions about miming and acting, sophisticated vs. pedestrian choreography. I wanted to zero in on small, simple gestures in programs that made a big impact with their subtlety or by just perfectly capturing the moment or music. I'll give two examples (I was obviously inspired by Sandra Bezic):

1) Lu Chen 1996 Worlds LP (Rachmaninoff Concerto No 2) https://youtu.be/ZCRaoNfU0r8?t=2m33s: the moment she opens up her robe and bares her soul still gives me goosebumps. I will always be a Michelle fan, but the maturity, softness, and sensuality of that moment is something that can only be achieved after living and experiencing the world for a while.

Simply gorgeous. That is one of the programs that I live through, while watching it. One of the comments said that Lu Chen's program was a triumph of pure artistry, vs. Michelle Kwan's was a triumph of technique and choreography.

Here's a moment that I love in Michelle's program. Oh, how it makes me yearn for long running edges out of jumps.

The opening to Zhiganshina/Gazsi's zombie free dance! I absolutely love this program.

Wow, I don't know where I was for this program when they originally skated it. Shocked that it was so recent. The commitment to the theatricality of the program is reminiscent of the 90s.

Pretty much everything about Berezhnaya & Sikharulidze's Lady Caliph program.

The way they glide towards the judges as they press their palms together at the beginning. The SBS spirals into the throw triple loop, the way he mimics her landing position with his arms spread out, her flick of the wrists as she speeds out of her landing into the spread eagle, and the way they both look up in that gorgeous position while holding hands afterward. Their statuesque poses with their right arms pointing up at the sky while their left arms cross their chest after the lift and before the step sequence. The way he jumps on his knee and places his head right next to her chest as she does an Ina Bauer. The way they both spread open their arms at the same time near the end of the sequence (also done at the beginning of the program before their SBS jumps). The pose at the end of the steps where his hands are thrust aloft and he looks up as she hugs him and the way they run hand in hand afterward. And of course their ending pose.

Perfection.

You're exactly right. You could take a gorgeous picture of any part of the program. Their extension

That "spooning" spiral is gorgeous. I too remember the moment when she landed the throw and he struck the most elegant pose ever for a male partner.

Everything about Yagudin's Winter at Salt Lake City are iconic. I especially love the vibrant step sequences and the fist pump after the 3Lz as well as spraying shards of the skating ice and his confidence of the victory at the end. The performance was like a magic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UlVeNEBFKE

These are probably not universally iconic, but whatever ;)

Apparently some people don't care for it, but I for one always enjoyed it when Plushy went "Sssshhhh" -https://i.pinimg.com/236x/b4/d1/28/b4d128f7f2b9541c4d4ca74a7a78d9d3.jpg

Also lots of Nijinsky inspired poses in his Tribute to Nijinsky program, I love this one! https://i.pinimg.com/originals/f4/a8/2c/f4a82ce94787d2a3371619302fade227.jpg

And in his younger years the Beilmaan spins of course! Although I love the spirals, especially the arm gesture thing he do: https://i.pinimg.com/736x/7c/77/85/...19387612948--evgeni-plushenko-ice-skaters.jpg So elegant!
