Two seasons of Dune. Now Enigma.

Smart and Dieck seem drawn to music that creates a distinctive atmosphere and gives them room to build a unique character on the ice.

I used to listen to Enigma all the time in the early '90s and remember other skaters using it. "Sadeness (Part I)" was a worldwide hit, blending Gregorian chants with electronic beats. Its title references the Marquis de Sade in a play on the word "sadness," and the song explores the tension between sensuality and religious restraint.

It should be interesting to see how they interpret that music on the ice and whether they lean into its darker, more provocative themes or take a different approach.

💬 What do you think of Smart & Dieck's music choices over the past three seasons? Is Enigma a good next chapter after Dune, or would you have preferred something completely different? What kind of music would you like to see them skate to in the future?

Enigma was a big hit in the 90s... but the music is a bit static. I guess it will be about acrobatic and story telling rather than traditional ice dancing.

The official video of Enigma's "Beyond the Invisible" contains a lot of ice dance by Rahkamo & Kokko of Finland. I would not call it static; but like Dune, it is other-worldly.

It should work for Smart & Dieck.

I wonder whether they will wear weird blinking hats though

however, the song they have on the instagram is the famous Enigma song Sadeness as mentioned in the OP.. Beyond the Invisible is odd but a bit more interesting for skating I would think... In any case... with this kind of music, it's almost as if we are getting Dune 3.
There is a Sadeness part 2.. so we may be getting Dune 4 next year ;)

I'm really looking forward to this, I think Enigma is squarely in their wheelhouse. They needed something different and dramatic and interpretive and this music seems to check all the boxes.
Oh I love the music and am sure they are going to have a wonderful program to it. So glad they did not go with another Dune program - while wonderful, it is time for something fresh. It is a very mature choice and I can already imagine them both doing well with it. I can't wait to see its debut!

Blinking hats could get them a nomination...or be cheap and tacky...

I loooved both Dune programs and TBH I think them most memorable ID programs of the last quad. Just my opinion, but I am pretty sure I am not alone in this. Both because they were great programs but also because they were just so much in tune with the vibe of the original hit movies (which I am not really such a great fan of but nevertheless I really appreciated it... ). It is thanks to Dune that they have become one of my favourite ID teams. Enigma sounds really cool and I hope they can make it into a similarly memorable masterpiece. Fingers crossed!

For those who don't remember the pairs team Anita Hartshorn & Frank Sweiding (US), here they skate to the music in a Pro event.

Static? I would not describe that music as static.
Well it is. It has the same basic drum box beat all the way through with very little evolution and variation. The spoken text doesn't contribute to any emotional and lyrical momentum either. Maybe it doesn't sound like this to you but it does to me. As a musician myself, I guess I can objectively say so.

One Halloween, I got a purple knitted hat featuring a spider with web and blinking lights. If something like that is available this year, perhaps fans could adopt them for wear at competitions. Unfortunately, the lights didn't work for very long. But that's Dollarama for you!

Well, I'm not a music expert but I do like the music, look forward to seeing what Tim and Olivia do with it and what kind of costumes they come up with. Funny thing, ice dance is my least favorite discipline but between T and O and Jean Luc and Marjorie, I'm really pleasantly excited about it this year.

The music can be static and pleasing at the same time. I liked Enigma when they came out. They were original matching the techno dance beats and Gregorian chant. Thirty something years later, a lot more people are layering tracks together, perhaps not Gregorian chant though ;). So the music was original and I enjoyed it back then. For a dance program, it looks to me that it will be more about tricks just like the wonderful video posted above with the pairs. I personally like when skaters move on the ice rather than posing or being carried. I know a lot of people loved the Dune free dance. I was lukewarm about it because of what I have mentioned above. So, in this occurrence, I do feel that they have found their style and will repeat it season after season just like it happens with some of the IAM teams. The Brits always do the same program. To a certain extent, so does Guillaume Cizeron. I don't think the Enigma program will be very different from Dune so that doesn't excite me as much as I prefer variety and skaters trying new things. Of course, I'll wait until we get to see the final product.

Agree. I'm hoping there is some sort of mix.

Ah yes! Thanks for sharing. I remember this exciting show team. That's why the music sounded familiar to me. 🙂 BTW, shout out to the very talented, sorely missed Brian Wright, a very creative choreographer. 😍

ETA:
The one-handed Detroiter move (which I didn't know was called that) I once saw a training clip of Kam/O'Shea practicing. A number of teams do the head-banger, mostly in exhibition these days, but it is also allowed in competition. The head-banger with twist positions 😯, is obviously very challenging and reliant upon perfect timing and complete trust to perform safely. Another exciting pairs move only seen in exhibition is the female partner lying in horizontal position with torso flat on her partner's head while turning like a platter (another instance of centrifugal force). No hands by the guy, but his hands are extended outward for balance and in a safe position to catch the female, if necessary. I don't know what the move is called. I have seen it performed by Tarasova/ Morosov after they saw James/Ciprès expertly execute it a few times. Another cool pairs move that came from show skating, J/C also performed in their Earned It sp. The female jumps sideways into the air in front of the male who catches her on the way down. J/C used that move as a difficult entry into a throw jump. 🫨

Regarding Smart/Dieck and Enigma, it sounds cool. I'm sure Romain will come up with amazing choreo, matched by unique costumes by Madi Chock. 😘

Every skater/ team who discover their unique style will usually perform some variation of that style going forward. Just as singles skaters hone skills in a pattern on the ice that they become comfortable with and will tend to repeat. Michelle Kwan was always accused of performing the same layout pattern of jumps. However, that's likely because the feats skaters perform are so difficult. Thus, in order to master, they seemingly require predictable, comfortable patterns and rhythms (e.g., the rhythmic steps pairs skaters perform diagonally across the ice to ace timing on their 3-twists). What makes programs different is the music; the choreographic moves and details that express the music; the costumes; skill, carriage, presence, and personalities of the skaters.

Another e.g., is Nathan Chen. He concentrated a lot on planning his layouts at the various rinks, in order to ensure comfort and predictability in performing multiple quads, while freely and creatively expressing the music with his unique movement style. Nathan's way of moving once prompted Kurt Browning to say, (and I paraphrase), "Nathan Chen is not like any skater who came before him."

This is not to say that skaters do not challenge themselves and try to do something else outside their comfort zone. But that does not always work out well for everyone. Case in point: Green/ Parsons developed a unique modern dance aesthetic under WISA. Their 2021-22 FD was exciting and impressive. Fans were anticipating seeing them build on this particular style aesthetic. Yet, they moved to MIDA the next season, and were counseled to go in a completely different direction that turned out to be generic and boring. Their skating skills were still excellent, but fans were confused and less than impressed by their Rhapsody in Blue FD, especially with their costumes initially not being blue. 🤔

They forfeited their special momentum after relinquishing the style that had gained them huge interest and a promising future. Of course, Michael was later hampered by injury, which contributed to further loss of forward direction. It took them a while to refind themselves creatively. They have had interesting programs in the past few years, yet unfortunately, they had already lost ground to their competitors, both domestically and internationally.

In regard to Guillaume Cizeron, his unique style of movement is his signature. It's part of him and doesn't need to drastically change. Plenty of men in ice dance copy or try to emulate moves patented by Gui.

What's fascinating is that we had wondered how Gui and Laurence would be able to meld their very different movement styles, with Gui being lyrical and Laurence more athletic. They apparently experimented a lot on the ice together, and they obviously developed complete trust in each other which led to them finding and honing a synchronous understanding. They were already good friends, so that long term camaderie and knowledge of each other's personalities helped, along with their mutually exquisite skating skills. Most importantly, Gui & Laurence found great music, and created unexpected and intricate choreo and movement passages that uniquely express emotions evoked by the music. They hit paydirt and slammed a bases clearing home run.

It's difficult to describe what they managed to create together by melding their different styles. It's not exactly lyrical. It's definitely athletic, but with a mesmerizing, yet langorous and seductive intensity. There's a flow, and a rise and fall, a conversation, and a deep connection that takes captivated viewers on a satisfying and memorable journey.

For sure, as many have reflected or voiced, it is in part, the unexpected huge success that Laurence & Gui achieved in one season that has inspired the recent unprecedented shakeups in ice dance and pairs. The exciting resets, IMO, will be beneficial for all the skaters, the fans, and the sport. Gui & Laurence found a unique style together, and it will be exciting to see how they build on what they organically created by concentrating on each other and on the emotions they excavated in The Whale score.

All that to say, Smart/Dieck found something that clicked for them in the Dune music, coupled with the moves created for them by Romain H. Desiring to continue exploring (via Enigma) this compelling aesthetic, which has brought them recognition and success, makes good sense.
