SOI Next Year

RD, by all means come to Philly! Jeff will be in the Philly show !

I haven't looked at the site yet but Jeff is coming to the Philly Show. Gail I am so excited. I have never seen him live and can't wait. The show is on Friday the 13th....maybe there will be some more surprises.

Perhaps there will be other guest stars announced closer to the date of the show (some time after US Nationals?). Keep in mind that the Philly show is a little before Worlds, so the Olympic eligible skaters would be busy training for Worlds. Anyway, I'm thrilled that Jeff is doing 1/2 of the US tour, and that we'll get to see him in Philly.

Oh man, I completely forgot about that. So I guess it would depend heavily upon who is named to the US World Team.

As I don't follow men's skating, nor care about it, I don't share the same excitement you guys do about Jeff B. being in the show. One individual does not make or break the show for me- it's the collective experience I'm looking for- last year was really great and I hope this year is just as great or better.

FYI....if anyone is trying to read the message board.....and all you see is smiley faces....you have to click on the box a few times for the messages to appear. Apparently a few people have sent a letter to admin to try and fix this problem. Hopefully it's just a glitch.

Just an update. I heard from the admin at SOI website. The problem with the message boards is that the text is white and it's on a white background. They are working on the problem and hope to have it fixed soon.

I'm not impressed with the new site... it seems less than stellar... I'm kinda bummed.

I like the looks of the new site. Looks like everyone will have access to the skater blog this season. They have Mike Weiss writing it this season and his first entry is up already! That used to be just for fanclub members! They do have to fix the message board, I e-mailed them too, and was told that the backgorund and letters were accidently set both to white and they are working on correcting that. I'm heading up to Lake Placid for opening night and I can't wait to see what they've come up with this year!

*back in my day* I can remember when the skater blog was not part of the fan club offerings... Steven Cousins did a great job of telling about the exploits of the boys when they were bored. They flooded a hallway while playing football...

I dunno the design seems a little cheap and disorganized... there's nothing that really POPS

Does anyone know how they pick the cities?? Is it based on attendance??

Dee

probably... price of the arena might have something to do with it to? not sure how it all works.

wish they'd come up to Alaska, but the last time Scott brought a tour up here (it was a smaller SOI cast really) they didn't even get half of an arena's worth of people... not cost effective at all. it was depressing.

Thanks Toni, the reason I asked when I checked the cities for the new show, I saw that Kansas City was taken off. They haven't come to Omaha for the last 3-4 years but did go to Kansas City. If it's the cost of the arena we have the old auditorium that just sits empty. SOI performed there before the new arena and it is smaller than the new arena so it doesn't look so empty. I don't get it. :sheesh:

there may be other costs that are involved with the decision as well... with the econmy in a lurch they might just be scaling back all the way around.

I heard last year that some venues around the USA were charging outrageous amounts to use their facilties so that could have something to do with SOI not going to as many markets. The economy being in the toilet doesn't help but some of the venues prices haven't helped things either. I'm just thankful SOI is still touring at all and I still want to go to several shows this year like I do every year. I'm fortunate that I have three relatively close shows that I can attend and cheer my heart out for the skaters and I'm happy to do so because I think it matters to them. I'm looking forward to hearing more about the show and the guest stars and I can't wait to hear about the Lake Placid show next weekend. :)

Some insight into the original question re passes.

I've had a few different types of passes at SOI due to my work (in various capacities). Pre-show passes allow you into the arena to watch the skaters warm up. You are not allowed to bother the skaters. Sometimes they will talk to you, most times they don't.. they have a job to do.

Post-show passes are given out by individual skaters to their individual guests. You are escorted backstage to meet with your particular skater. It is not a meet and greet or autograph/photo session. It is a time for skaters to have a few moments in a private, secure area with their family and friends. Sometimes contest winners or other special arrangements (i.e. "make a wish" children) are accommodated during this time as well.

In Canada, they hold a pre-show "meet and greet" .. or at least did at one time. This was reserved specifically for HSBC employees and guests when they were the title sponsor.

In select stops in the US and Canada, they hold receptions. These are usually reserved for sponsor types, friends and family.

Besides having a "connection" the only other ways I've seen to have some sort of access to these or events like them:
- credit card reward programs, like the one already described in this thread
- SOI auctions through ticketmaster

^ Thanks for the info. That was a clear post and easy to follow.

I had no idea it was not a meet and greet. I know many other shows DO offer backstage passes to "meet and greet" sessions after the show. After the Baltimore show there was a large amount of people with passes waiting to go backstage (I'd estimate maybe a tenth of the total audience- *maybe* a little less). I had no idea the skaters had THAT many friends and family in this region :p

I remember asking one of the security people before the show (we were in line waiting for them to open the doors) why certain people were being let through and he replied that some of the skaters had family or friends in the area and they wanted to see them. Maybe there were a few skating club folks there as well.

Oh well...in the spirit of my original post, I'll keep the slim hope alive ;) but as I said before, no sleep lost if unsuccessful.

Red Dog, this trick has always worked for me. Wear a spangled shirt, sling a pair of skates over your shoulder and just walk on past the guard like you're part of the cast.

If anyone asks, tell them you're Brian Boitano.
