I don't get all this talk about momentum. It did nothing for Wagner in 2010 or 2015 or Gold this year.

And since we're talking Edmunds - well, did she have any "momentum" going into the 2014 Nationals? How about Nagasaki? Zawadzki? Gao?

I'm using momentum to refer to the fact that, if it looks like you're having a fairly successful season, nationals judges will (probably) be kinder in their scores because they'd rather you go to Worlds than the girl with the bad GP results.

Mirai had zero momentum in 2014, Ashley had all of it. The only problem was Ashley skated SO badly they couldn't possibly place her above Mirai. So they let Mirai have the medal and Ashley got the spot.

Judges want the best team to go to Worlds, and when it comes down to a third spot that's up for grabs, they're going to do their best to give the scores to the person they think will do the best.

I agree with you. However, I think it is a mistake for the US judges to judge how they do at nationals, in particular overlooking very egregious under rotations. The result with Mirai 3rd and Ashley 4th would probably have been the same, but both deserved lower scores. I think it was that event that Ashley was a full half turn short on the 2A in the SP but got full credit for the jump. Unlike international judges, the US national judges seem to care very much that a program that places high "looks" like a strong program, favoring under rotations to falls and good lines over transitions. Someone like Courtney, who rarely under rotates her jumps and has a ton of transitions, is marked much lower against her peers at nationals than she would be by an international panel.

Very happy to see Tyler back on the ice, hope she can over come the negatives that have sidetracked her recently, get her mind back in the game and make it to her first GP. She is very exciting to watch and after last years Nationals , she showed if she is in the right place mentally she can skate well! Such a talented skater!

One of the reasons Mirai got two internationals in the 2015-2016 season, even though she was 10th at 2015 Nationals: she got only one GP invitation (NHK).
These US ladies (with their 2015 Nationals finish) each got two: Gold (2nd), Wagner (1st), Hicks (8th), Edmunds (4th), Chen (3rd), Miller (9th). Wang (15th) and Bell (6th) each got one---and Bell's was SA. Bell also got two internationals---Nepela and US Classic 2015.

Interesting developments.

 

[Skater Boy]

There are so many good, very good American ladies - maybe not great. Led by Ashley and Gracie it seems like everyone else is chasing for that third coveted spot. Polina is coming back as is Tyler and Caroline Zhang - many say she is a non factor. But a talent you just hope reaches her potential as former junior world champ Add to that Mariah, Courtney, Karen, Angela (Idoubte Agnes Z will come back) it seems like we might have a similar situation like the last olympics. it will be interesting now that Ashley is a world medallist will that give her the confidence for finally an American lady to take the lead and be the no. 1. Considering there are a lot of very good but not superstar Yuna Kim/Michelle Kwan level Russians and Japanese ladies there is room for an American to take the gold. The judges will give them the pcs - they need the goods though. In the end I can see a lot of tears at US nationals in 2018 both joy and sorrow. Especially for Mirai and Polina. Can you imagine if exactly what happened in 2014 happened again in 2018. I mean skaters will say they skate for themselves but deep down or not so deep down especially those so close will be in agony.

Sadly this is not surprising. I hope that Polina not pulling out of NHK is a good sign for her at least and a good sign her team is taking things slow and cautiously. One GP is better than none, or even two GPs but no nationals. Tyler I am a bit more sad about, Polina has enough of a name/standings that I think she can bounce back next season, Tyler is less of a name and I am sad she looks like she won't be able to capitalize on her success at nationals last year. On the plus side I do think she has a bye to Nationals at least.

I think Polina has to be allowed to recover in her own time. Since she did just start jumping recently, I think it can come as no surprise that she may feel inadequately prepared for the GP, and that is okay. There's certainly no need to panic over her long term prospects based on this.

One GP is better than none, or even two GPs but no nationals. Assuming she is taking it slow after coming back from an injury, I agree, this may be a very mature move for a young skater who seems to understand the bigger picture - hats off to Polina's Team.

I, too, am more concerned about Tyler who seems to be struggling with the sport itself and the many options life provides, a strong comeback last year with lots of momentum behind her, a great talent and ambassador of the sport.

A very tough individual sport, that is for sure.

I don't think Tyler is eligible to go, the replacement will be selected on the basis of who is next on the season's best list. I don't think Tyler is currently in the top 5 there but would be happy if I'm wrong.

As of today Tyler is no longer listed for Trophee de France. Rostelcom is a week earlier so she should be out of the running as a replacement for Polina.

Where is the list of subs anyway? I know it floats around and gets reposted, but my brain it not helping me find it.

I wonder if Mariah Bell might be able to snag a spot now, I think she is reasonably high on the list now if you include this season... but the feds seem to play by their own rules. Adam and Romain are already at TEF, so her coaches are already making the trip, slipping her in would be pretty painless I would think. Plus I would love to see Romain and Mariah get a GP together.
