State of U.S. Ladies' skating 2016-17

I always found it interesting that Surya didn't wear tights; I imagine it would be frustrating as a black person to have tights that are marketed as "skin colored" that are only really "skin colored" for certain races? Either way, it's noticeable if you don't wear tights at all, or if you wear beige tights and have darker skin.

Is this still an issue today, or are there darker coloured tights for those who don't have the beige/suntan toned skin? I'm trying to remember if Vanessa James and Mae Berenice choose to wear tights... Photos I've googled of Vanessa appear to have her wearing dark brown tights, as the colour doesn't quite look like skin.

This is completely true. I just looked at the tight colors from Capezio and the names have changed since my day. The tights that I used to wear, were called Columbian Coffee and were a deep Brown in color. I don't think I ever wore Black, Charcoal, or Slate as they were called in my day.

Figure skating tights by Mondor only offer black as a darker colour...otherwise it's two shades of tan and caramel...

Jerry's seems to think that everyone should wear "suntan"..

Which explains why so many skaters wear tights that are noticeably off their skin colour whatever their racial or ethnic background . . .

If those were my only choices, I would have insisted on wearing paints.

Starr Andrews looks the best among the juniors this year, but she hasn't skated a clean program with all the triples yet. Bit early to talk about her marketability.

Well, as a male skater your choicewould be fairly grim. Mondo feels it only needs to offer one winter weight and one summer weight pant style. Same for jackets. And the sizing is .....odd.

Basically, made to measure training wear is the norm for skating boys in our club.....But it means they're all set for competition as they already have an atelier that knows how to fit them....

But I see why so many of the women are going for the one piece....

I agree. I had never heard of Starr until 2 weeks ago and that was here in GS. I have only seen her on YouTube and I'm pretty sure that most people in the US have no idea who is. I find it sad that more people in states know who Dance Mom's Abby Lee's students are than any young skater in the world. I'm sure they have no idea who Med, Kaetlyn, and Javi are. Even Plushy and Yags are probably known as "That Skater Dude From Russia" but I doubt that people would know their names. Maria B. was the most hated skater in the US (Not by ME ) after she beat Michelle in 1999 but, I'm sure that most people know her as, the blonde from Russia who beat Michelle. Trust me, Michelle was the most popular skater in the US for a decade. Poor Tara got so much hate, " Even In the US " for beating Michelle that they even made a Will and Grace Episode about it.

For tights in different shades, my daughter usually wears dance tights for skating (this year though she had a bunch from an event and just wore the unmatching colors). Dance tights come in more skin tones. Shades of Dance has a big selection. Skating tights just don't often work for her coloring.

I've been watching every single JGP event since 2014 and the last junior US skater I remember is Vivian Le.

Thanks for all the info on different coloured tights! Sounds like the situation isn't all that much better than it was 20 years ago in Surya's time.

Regarding Starr Andrews, I think it's awesome that she's moving up the ranks and making a name for herself! So often you have a youngster go viral on YouTube and then you never hear of them again.

I hope Starr would bring back "Whip My Hair" as a SP. I would be jumping up and down screaming and whipping my imaginary wig with her. That SP with all the jumps, would be an instant iconic program because it's fun, funky, and extraordinary. I can imagine the crowd going wild.

I'm pretty sure Abby Lee is known as
1. "The fat lady on Dance Moms who yells at everyone"
2. The director of the school that taught the "little girl who wears the blonde wig in those Sia music videos"
3. And now famous for laundering money and getting in trouble with the IRS ... Silly Abby. You have to evade paying taxes legally, like Trump!

Although true, Tara in my circles is known as "that little white girl who beat Michelle and made her sad."

Holy Cow.....Those comments are all true.

Congratulations to Courtney for winning another GP medal :)

She is always scoring well when landing her jumps and as usual, her speed and the pop in her jumps are amazing. Only wish she would rush a little bit less and stretch out more in the jump landings.

Courtney has consistently done quite well in international events (http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs_cr_00013337.htm), and another GP medal is a great achievement. Now she needs to bring her peak level to nationals so that she can compete for a spot on the podium.

I know it's not completely relevant here but, Todd Sand still looks like a Disney Prince and hasn't aged a day. I'm so freakin' jealous of how good he looks. :drama:

Agreed! I would have remembered him being in the K&C with her before so I think he may be a new addition to the team. Compared to her previous programs, this season's are more enjoyable to watch. She looked very inspired skating this weekend.

It occurred to me that Courtney is the only U.S. lady (so far) to do both GP programs without a <<, <, e or ! on any of her jumps. Also saw Level 4 on all but 1 spin.

We may not be seeing pics of Polina training... but we at least are seeing that she is happy and living life.
