Statement from USFS regarding Dave Lease

Someone could pretend to be Benoit Richaud and answer questions. Or even Yuzuru Hanyu . . .
There are people who are verified by GS to be who they say they are. Ben Jalovick is one I know of. I doubt GS would allow someone pretending to be Nathan or Yuzu or whoever to post without verifying they were who they said they were. (I don't know if Dave Lease was ever verified).

Unfortunately I believe you are correct.

It's not what he thinks. It's what he said about the dead skaters.

What he thinks is what he said. What I think is what I am saying to you, right now. I read what he thought and I think he made a poor choice making his thoughts public.

Back to the salient question - why does anyone care what this Lease person thinks? Did he win a few OLYG medals? Doubtful.
He is a hugely ...popular? I don't know the word to use. Whatever he is, USFS felt the situation important enough to make a statement. Which I am relatively sure they have never done concerning a blogger.

The USFS statement online unfortunately can lead a reader to the response posts which can be found underneath and in many ways are equally concerning. This is America, we don't ban citizens from buying tickets to sporting events simply because we disagree with or dislike what someone says. Roger Goodell of the NFL would be banning thousands of people a day if that were the law of the land.

I’ve made my feelings on TSL and in particular Dave very clear in the past and one of my biggest concerns was the influence he has and the way he uses of it.

The fact that USFS has made a public statement speaks volumes to me as to his influence and impact on our community.

Wow, dude is cooked.

Was still friends with Dave on Facebook as of this afternoon but even his personal account is showing deleted/unavailable as of tonight.

Comments were very hurtful in the wake of such a tragedy. Really impressed with USFS here, love to see it.

I agree.

I mean TSL’s no stranger to controversy, and Dave’s certainly had his run ins with the media and various figures in the skating world. I remember when Eteri of all people called him out on Instagram a few years ago.

But this… is different. I don’t think USFS has ever said anything before, and certainly not in a public statement post on Instagram.

I think this whole thing is a perfect example of the "cancel culture" we are in, globally, all of us. And how dangerous social media can be. One day you are popular, next day you say something stupid on social media and the whole world hates you...and you get "cancelled". No judge or jury needed. Many famous people have fallen into this trap.

That said...it was a stupid thing to say by TSL, and I expect a public apology.

He is not a celebrity who randomly puts their foot in.... he said on a number of occasions that he worked/works in the sphere of PR. Let that sink in!!
Edit:
He sparked controversies in he past and has apparently not learnt the lessons. Not quite the typical example of someone falling victim of the cancel culture.

I was a curious person and googled. Looks that person wants to be famous by saying stupid thing. He has said a lot of nonsense. I refuse to write his name.

What comes to talent, we have had here "Late bloomers" and skaters "Who have developed fast" threads. About children you never know how far they can go. Of course not everybody can make it not to Olympic podium and not even to Olympics, not even those who would be talented enough to, because there are limited amount of spots. Who thinks he/she can say about 11-16 years aged children how far they can go, is not qualified to any profession concerning figure skating.

I certainly can not remember USFS saying anything like this publicaly before. When its this blatant, I am all for it. I can think of a few other times they should have spoken out and didnt....

NFL fandom ... something I know something about. :)

The NFL can and most certainly does ban people from buying tickets because of what they say. Most recently, the Eagles banned a "fan" who went viral for using sexist language to the fan of another team. He was not, as far as I know, violent or breaking the law. His speech was crude and repugnant and he is banned from the Linc.

Because this is America and that is what private entities are permitted to do.

USFS as a private entity could in fact bar Dave Lease from its events if it chose to so. Although at this point, facing the consequences of his own actions, I doubt very much he will choose to go.

For years he has used his platform to peddle conspiracy theories against a particular group of skaters, to stir up such negativity and hatred towards a particular group of skaters, so it was about time someone called him out.

It should never have got this far. A lot of people enabled his toxicity for too long.

I think he had just become so emboldened after years of peddling toxic commentary that he didn't know where the line was. Bravo to USFS.

Did his channel get deleted, or has he just temporarily removed it because he isn't brave enough to face the music?

I think he removed/hid his social media content from public view. His last post on Patreon seems to suggest he will make a video addressing his “out of context” remarks.

Not sure what may come of that but lets hope some time away grants him a degree of clarity and grasp of the insensitivity he displayed.
